Morning glory

OK, I feel like I need to defend myself on the music stuff. A few points:

I do appreciate what Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, et al did for rap. But it’s what came next – the late 80s, Rob Base, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan – that took it to the next, necessary level. And still the best level, in my opinion.

And yes, the list of top songs doesn’t have Kool Moe Dee, Big Daddy Kane and other quality artists. Hey, it was a strong era, some people have to be left out.

Such is also the case for the top 10 list of early 90s country songs. I’ve gotten a lot of complaints about no George Strait. Hey, I agree, you can’t have a conversation about that era and not talk about George Strait. But you CAN have a list of top 10 songs. My favorite of Strait’s was “The man in love with you,” but it still wouldn’t even rank in my top 25.

George Strait is sort of the Mark Richt of country music – a string of consistency that makes him one of the best, but not one great song that goes down in history as the best.

I also agree about Dwight Yoakam; I almost put “Thousand Miles to Nowhere” on there. And I’m aware Alan Jackson and Trisha Yearwood deserve some love, especially with their Georgia roots. I almost went with Alan – “Daddy won a radiooooo” is an engaging, alliterative opening line. But like Strait, and Yearwood, this is an individual song list – and my list, anyway.

Now, having run the spectrum from rap to country, I’m sure at some point we have to go down the middle and do some pop. I’ve got some good blog topics on that (like ‘ABBA, yea or nay?’), when we get around to it.

Meanwhile, I’m being told this blog is also supposed to include some football notes. Sigh. Fine:

Here’s my story in today’s papers on the position battles facing the Georgia football team. And here are my notes, led with Mike Bobo feeling differently from Richt on Aaron Murray's scrimmage performance.

Also, I’ll post later this morning some leftover football notes from yesterday.

EDIT: I forgot about De La Soul! Thanks to the commenter for pointing that out. Well that's what I get when I do a rushed list. "Me Myself and I" should be on the top 10. Definitely.

Three words: Ocean...Front...Property. Strait's best song to date. That song IS 80's country music.

Hey man, what about the OLB's? I think you missed them when talking about position battles! I'm assuming Houston at one spot and ??????? at the other.

I gotta tell you, man, I'm a little more interested in why Branden Smith isn't on the field.

What kind of placement tests are kids taking these days between their freshmen and sophomore years of college?

I'm interested in where Branden Smith is too. When there's something new to report, it'll be passed along.

Darryl Gamble's looking pretty good at the other OLB spot, with Cornelius Washington giving him a push still.

Seth,

A random question not related to music. Can you find out if the Dawgs will wear the 'real' silver britches this year instead of the flat gray ones worn last year? I know Damon Evans expected silver this year but now he is gone? Thanks

I have a feeling that Mr. Smith has played his last down for UGA.

I wonder why there's such disparity between Coach Richt and Coach Bobo regarding AM's performance in Tuesday's scrimmage? Is it a "Good Coach, Bad Coach" approach that they're taking? Or do you think Coach Bobo might be feeling a little pressure concerning turnovers?

Seth,

FWIW, please don't feel like you have to write about TV, music, and the like. David did that, but there are many of us out there who don't need to be entertained, we're only here for the football.

For many the non-football stuff is a distraction, if not an annoyance. Just sharing that point of view, so you know its out there.

Definitely keep the TV and music stuff coming with the football stuff. Of course everyone wants the football stuff, but for all of us who sit in front of a computer all day it is also nice to be entertained with some other stuff every once and a while, especially since I am anxiously awaiting some posts on breaking bad.. Two things: DJ Kool "Let Me Clear My Throat," and Dwight Yoakam "Long White Cadilac."

Hey Seth,
Love the music talk and tv talk et al! We all love the DAWGS primarily, but you have the space to break it up with some cultural opinions too. Now, when the season starts.....

ok, I'll bite and leave my two cents about the music, movies and tv shows.

I'm here for informed, strategic talk/predictions/reporting on UGA Football. That IS my entertainment. If I want to talk 80's music or an episode of community, It'll be with my wife.

More in-depth reporting on UGA Football, less pop-culture. Think more "NFL Total Access", and less "The Soup."

But, I can skip over the other stuff and get to what I want. I'll still be reading this blog regardless.

And my two cents is done...

While I'm with IveyLeaguer on the music info comment, it doesn't mean that don't want the Dawg info.

Read the comment from Bobo on Murray and find it not to be new when one reads all the info, sees with their own eyes and already had come to the conclusion that his pass errata will be commensurate with Stafford. I don't expect anything more. What gets me though were the comments from your predecessor and others who were "in the know" with sideways references as to who was plugged into the coaching staff and Bobo best. They gave their assurances that Murray was "the Man" and better than the other QBs WHILE THEY WERE COMPETING and before Mett's demise. I didn't like the comments and said so because it dampens the competitor's attitudes since they can read these columns also.

Spring practice demonstrated the same tendencies and, no matter the future promise of his athleticism, he wasn't the best qb on the field in that game. No matter how great your background, your savvy, your conduct and talent; if it doesn't show up on the field under game conditions then it can't be factored in. Would all of those "in" people please speak up with your reassurances now and explain to us mundane viewers/fans what is it about this qb under pressure that makes him stand out?Don't get me wrong. I followed his exploits during recruiting and a year before he signed and was ecstatic when he came on board, later influencing the signing of Orson Charles. I'm p-oed that no one would let competition decide who the best player on the field at that position and time was.

Some of you "inside experts" remind me of the saying: "expert" is composed of two words; "ex" is an unknown quantity in math and "spurt" is a drip under pressure. Some of you qualify.

Seth, you are point on with your Dawg reports and I think that IveyLeaguer agrees that we like to read your info. Please continue to proof-read your articles specifically to keep a little arrogance from creeping in. That seems to happen to some of the best writers who lose track that fans have opinions that they feel are dead on and later prove to be so. I ask that other posters on here to not tell me about the running game and other assurances that Murray's passing game will come around later. I hope his first play is a pass and his tenure as qb is all that we all hope for...just don't try to convince me before he proves it on the field.

Seth-

I've been out most of the day, what's the latest on "Errorn Intercept-a-Murray?

Still no mention of Eric B and Rakim. Allof your choices for your list are great picks, but anyone older than 33 is gonna give props to Rakim.. By far the most advanced rhymes for the 80's...

For the folks disparaging country music out of hand, I would ask if they like (mostly early) R.E.M., Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Eagles ...

All country. Some variety in style thrown in, sure. But there's no denying the overwhelming country component in all of the above. And I'd go so far as to say that if the Eagles had been played exclusively on country music radio, no one in the world would have thought there was anything unusual going on.

Now, I can appreciate that some regular readers don't care anything about non-football posts, but they're easy to skip. I come here for UGA athletics information, but I like the other stuff, as well. I could poke around and find other blogs specifically about music and TV, but there's only so much time in the day, and I don't care to specialize in them, so occasional diversions in the sports blogs are fine by me.

Meanwhile, my verification word for this post? "plawbals". And I think that about covers it.
