An excerpt:
ATHENS — Greg McGarity was in his office at Florida on Wednesday morning on a conference call when his BlackBerry buzzed. He took a peek. The caller ID read “Private Number.”
McGarity knew what that meant. He was getting the call.
“I said, ‘Well it’s either thumbs up or thumbs down,’ ” said McGarity, who then holed himself up in a colleague’s office, locking the door to take the call.
It was up. And a lifelong dream was finally realized. McGarity was chosen as the next athletics director at Georgia, a job he was formally hired for and introduced for Friday.
“It was one of those things where you just had to say, ‘This really did happen,’ ” McGarity said Friday, a bit after a news conference on campus. “I’ve gotta pinch myself; this did happen.”
And a few more news and notes on McGarity, including reaction from Mark Richt and Mark Fox:
ATHENS — There was a receiving line for new athletics director Greg McGarity at the Georgia Center on Friday that snaked around a corner.
Near the back of the line, Mark Richt and Mark Fox were patiently waiting, carrying on a conversation.
Richt was asked why he didn’t just move up.
“I don’t want to lose my spot in line,” Richt said.
Richt, Georgia’s head football coach, and Fox, the men’s head basketball coach, had never met McGarity before Friday.

Who cares about this guy winning the lottery and taking a $500K job to do nothing in an organization which has a monopoly over student athletes.
1. Is he going to help us beat the gators? No
2. Will he crack down on our players committing offenses? No, the gators are worse than we are.
3. Will he convince the gators to play the auburn tigers the week before they play us and allow us to be off the week before we play the gators. The gators are not that stupid any more.
Bottom line, who cares
