Happy Friday
Thank (Whoever your deity may be, unless you don't have one) it's Friday ... Am I right people?
First off, my story in today's papers on Georgia's strategy in turning around its penalty problems.
I know a lot of you don't want to re-live last year, at least as it pertained to the penalties. But I lost a couple hours of my life Thursday going through the box scores and assembling a breakdown of what penalties were called on the Bulldogs, so here you go:
OFFENSE (55 percent)
Holding, offense ..............11-110 yards
False start ...................29-144
Personal foul, offense ........5-56
Illegal block, offense ........5-49
Unsportsmanlike, offense ......3-45
Clipping, offense .............2-30
Delay of game .................5-23
Illegal substitution, offense .2-10
Illegal formation, offense ....1-5
Illegal motion, offense .......1-5
Intentional grounding .........1-0
DEFENSE (30 percent)
Defensive pass interference ...9-106
Defensive offsides ............10-47
Personal foul, defense ........5-71
Face mask, defense ............3-33
Defensive holding .............1-10
SPECIAL TEAMS (15 percent)
Illegal block, .. ..............5-46
Personal foul ..................3-44
Face mask ......................2-30
Holding ........................1-10
Illegal formation ..............1-5
As I elucidate in the story, Georgia's emphasis is more on cutting down on "dumb penalties," to use the coaches' words. And if you count personal fouls and pre-snap penalties as in that category, then that's about half of last year's.
- In other news, Mark Richt's fully-clothed dive on Monday continues to make a splash - sorry - across the country. It was on "SportCenter" on top 10 plays of the day - and No. 10, as Richt noted Thursday.
"That's the second time I've been on there," Richt said, pointing to his basketball shot as the first.
The dive was also mentioned on "Pardon the Interruption." The show is being co-hosted this week by Miami Herald columnist Dan LeBatard, who talked about Richt learning to dive while going to Miami. (I believe Richt has actually said he learned it growing up in Boca Raton, Fla.)
Pretty decent pre-season publicity for Richt and Georgia, I'd say.
(And on a side note, Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon cannot return to PTI soon enough. I don't mind Bob Ryan, but LeBatard ... no comment.)
- And finally ... Eh, I'll do another blog post on the other stuff.

Thank your deity, not diety, unless Nutrisystem has worked miracles for you.
Thanks for the correction - and good line.
False Start and Defensive Offsides have to jump out at you. Dumb a$$ penalties. This is all about F-O-C-U-S, play in and play out. Come on guys, please let's get our collective s&#t together this year with the penalties or it's going to be another uphill battle every game.
Don't like LeBatard?
BAM!
(I'm not fond of him either, but that is apparently his thing.)
LEBATARD IS AWFUL... ALMOST AS BAD AS MARIOTTI AND KEYSHAWN JOHNSON
LETS GO DAWGS!
I'll take anyone over Kornheiser. ANYONE!
Conspicuously missing from the list of penalties committed by the Special Teams is what I like to refer to as the "happy/fun-time" penalty, Delay of Game: Kick out of Bounds. Thankfully, the arrival of Coach Warren Belin negates this issue from future kickoffs, right? Right?
Seth, It might be enlighting to look at the penalties in just the SEC games. After all you would expect there to me more focus and therefore less dumb penalities in the tougher SEC games. However, I do not expect the evidence to show that. Thanks
Yes please post the penalties from kicks that went out of bounds!
One thing not shown in the penalties - negated plays and yardage lost (not just the 5 or 10 yards) but the total. A 10 yard penalty that negated a 25 yard first down.
BullMack - Can't agree more with you that the stats that jumped off the page where the false starts and offsides. False starts should almost never happen and defiantly not to the tune of over 2 a game. Cut that in half and it would greatly help offense out in keeping the ball, which in turn helps out the other phases of the game. As for offsides it is not just the 5 yards but the "free" plays it gives the offenses and if the "free" play doesn't work out it puts them in 2nd and short, 3rd and short or a new set of downs.
