The coordinators weigh in

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Georgia was lax in its fundamentals, namely tackling.

“We have to tackle. When you tackle, on third down you have to get off the field,” Grantham said. “From that standpoint of it, we got to do a better job mentally of finsishing off tackles. We got to a do a better job in the run game, and when you get them to third down you have to get them off the field, and you have to make plays on the ball.”

Grantham was asked to explain Marcus Lattimore’s huge game.

“When a guy has success like that, I don’t think it’s one thing. I think it’s a few things,” Grantham said. “I think what we have to do is continue to work. It’s along season, and improve on the things that happened today. If we do that, we’ll be fine moving forward.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was overall pleased with his unit, but not the amount of points it put up.

“We had enough in the red zone, to come away with six points in three trips, that’s disappointing,” he said.

Bobo was asked about the absence of A.J. Green.

“We’re gonna run our offense. He’s not here,” Bobo said. “I thought our receivers stepped up and did a nice job. You’ve gotta give South Carolina credit, they did a nice job of stopping us.”

Bobo also seemed to stick by the gameplan. Georgia finished the game with 253 yards, 192 of them passing. The Bulldogs averaged just 2.3 yards per rush.

“We felt going into the game that we were gonna play to our strength: The play-action pass and the running game,” Bobo said. “The running game was a little bit inconsistent, but I thought the play-action pass worked well when we used it.
And you wanna protect a guy on the road, you wanna do things to give him confidence. The bottom line (is) we were still in the football game.”

The Bulldogs also burned three quick timeouts, two of them on offense, early in the second half.

“Not good. Not good,” Bobo said. “That happens early in the season, but we’ve got to do a better job of getting the right personnel in the game. … It’s the little things that are gonna cost you on the road. Not converting in the red zone, turnovers, and burning those timeouts.”

Bobo's comments kinda tick me off. It doesn't even sound like he was bothered! How many times did they go 3 and out? And 6 points off 3 red zone trips? And all he'll talk about is trying to help Murray gain confidence?

I saw a qb who didn't need to be coddled with crappy play-calling. I DO think we really missed Caleb King today: he'd have carried a lot those between the tackles runs Ealey had a hard time with. And I'm pretty sure he scores a TD with carries inside the 10.

Bobo Has No Clue said...

Okay, totally disagree with you on King. He is Richard Samuel without the bulk. Guy sucks. Can't break a tackle to save his life. YAC doesn't exist with him. Ealey clearly our #1 back.

Bobo - WTF?!?!? What game were you watching? Seriously? That was the most brutal bunch of play-calling I've ever seen.

Pretty good indication that a coach is no good is that no one is trying to poach him from your unit. In case you haven't noticed, Bobo isn't taking any calls, nor does he deserve to.

Reminds me of the great question "how do you hold Terrell Davis to under 50 yards per game? I don't know, ask Ray Goff" We have so many weapons that will go on to do bigger things as soon as they graduate to big league coaching.

We have 13-0 talent and 5-7 coaching.

WOW. Is Bobo really this clueless?

"“We felt going into the game that we were gonna play to our strength: The play-action pass and the running game,”"

Hahahahahaha.

This is the same o-coordinator that didn't even know which WRs were on the field last year.

I'm sorry, but Bobo is just Willie Jr. He has to go.

For 5 years, our offense has NEVER been feared, despite tons of NFL talent.

Wasn't our supposed strength on the offensive side of the ball the tight ends and offensive line? If today's result was any indication our line is average at best and the tight ends are an after thought.

I know AJ is suspended, but we just seem to be missing consistent play makers. With AJ out we almost have to let Murray run the ball more often or else the opponent can play straight up D with no fear. Absent superior talent, we had better keep the D guessing.

I also don't recall a screen pass, a quick slant, or anything else that we might have been able to bust open.

All in all, a very disappointing effort.

Bobo definitely was playing not to lose. He had better go out swinging or he will be out of a job soon.

Sunday offensive talent

Friday Night offensive coaches

It's sad. The whole team will turn into Richard Samuels and Kiante Tripps if these clowns continue to have their way.

Can you name the most creative offensive play of the day? Can you name a creative offensive play today?

Sandlots have seen more strategy

CMR needs to get rid of BoBo and hire a offensive coordinator that is strong in areas where he is weak - play calling in the red zone.

We might have the best offensive coordinator in the nation on ga guys! Only problem is his name is mark richt!

Bizzaroneck said...

I absolutely agree with everybody that the offensive game plan was atrocious. Washuan's fumble inside the 5 killed us. We had all the momentum until then. Aaron Murray is a player but he isn't as fast as I thought. I don't like how Grantham substitutes on D. Maybe, Seth can answer this but are our number 2's that bad? I mean everybody knows Nick Williams is a hitter that's good in run coverage. Why the hell didn't he play? The D line was consistently blown off the line of scrimmage. Don't we at least try our bigger D lineman? Bean or Kwame? The secondary missed a few tackles but let me tell you they are all stellar in coverage. SC didn't have a WR open the whole game. Watch Vance Cuff, he is shut down. O line is awful! Let me repeat that the O line is awful.

How often do you find yourself saying "if only our offense wasn't more conservative than Ohio State?"

If I'm a recruit in the state of Georgia, I'm praying for Saban or Meyer to call me, because there's just nothing upstairs with Bobo, McClendon or Ball. It's sad that former players are made men in our program despite never accomplishing a damn thing.

At least Applewhite was at Rice and Bama before going to Texas. I look forward to the explanation for Richt hiring Joe Cox in the offseason...

I won't profess Bobo as an offensive genius. However, blaming this loss solely on him is a bit misguided.

Before I get into specifics, had we gone more pass heavy and Murray ended the day with, hypothetically, 2 ints against a fairly talented secondary, would you be blaming him, or Bobo for throwing too many pass plays and abandoning the run? It certainly wouldn't be the first time that complaint came up.

Here's the reality of what happened today:

Defense:

Our defense played well, but not great. Lattimore did break a few tackles, but a majority of his yards after contact came from poor form tackling. Still, the D kept us in the game.

Offense:

We had more than enough opportunities to score points and didn't come through. After SC drove down the field on their first possession, we drove right back. We only stalled after a sure TD pass was dropped by a TE. 3 points. Through the rest of the game I saw some good play calls, including a nice long bomb thrown up the left side of the field. Had that been A.J....might have been caught. And, after another nice drive with a HUGE pass to Durham, Ealey fumbles away inside the 5.

Could we have been more aggressive on offense? Probably, and its equally likely that we would have had another turnover as it is that we might have scored on two more drives and won the game.

We lost the game. It sucks and there's no way to take it back, but Bobo called a good enough game to win. We had our chances and didn't capitalize on them.

I know it's pretty easy to pick one target to throw under the bus after a tough loss, but there's more than one person responsible for what happened today. Don't get me wrong, Bobo's got room for improvement, but the players on the field had just as much, if not more to do with the loss than he did.

On the bright side, the D did hold (mostly) when needed, and Murray didn't make any mistakes that cost us. We've still got 10 games to play in the regular season, and I for one am not giving up on the team after the first loss.

I don't think Bobo could be considered as o-coordinator at any to 50 school in 1-a. But he is that plus a position coach at Ga. He was an average QB when he was at Ga. and he doesn't know what he's doing now.One would think after all those years with Ray Goff that we would learn to look for coaches with game that are savvy and not worry about their Ga ties. Richt was forced to get rid of the the D coaches...I think this might be the year for the other side of the ball.

"Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was overall pleased with his unit..."

I stopped reading after that. Is Bobo really that clueless? Please tell me he's just putting up a front to save face. If not, this guy deserved to be sh*tcanned IMMEDIATELY.

Bobo should have been fired last year at the very latest. Now if he gets canned this season, which I hope he does, we'll have to break in a new offensive coordinator for the 2011 season, a season with a favorable schedule for us. We're going to waste it by having a new offensive scheme to go along with our relatively new defensive scheme.

Oh well, maybe 2015 will be our year! YAH!

I think everyone is way overreacting about this game! We were underdogs! Everyone thought we were going to lose and we did! We barely lost at that! Last year ga would of been beat by a lot more that 11 points if we only put up six! I saw a lot of positive things today and am not ready to start talk on firing coaches after the second game! Nobody is going to get fired after two games so shut the hell up! A season of offensive outputs like this yeah but not after two games! Sc could go on and have the best d in the nation! Were only two games in!

Booboo has turned making head scratching play calls into an art form. The fact that he doesn't seem to recognize that the "disappointing" 6 points the offense put up today is a direct reflection on his play calling ability is appalling.

From my spot on the couch, I saw a Georgia offense that was perfectly capable of moving the ball on the SC defense but was hamstrung by an offensive coordinator who has no more idea than a goose how to manage a series, a game, or any combination thereof. I usually defer to those who've forgotten more about football than I'll ever know but you don't have to be very bright to see that Booboo is just as much in over his head on the sidelines as he was under center.

"Bobo Has No Clue": yeah, Caleb King really sucks, that's why he was our leading scorer last year (behind the kicker) and why he had a higher ypc than Ealey in games like Auburn and Tech.

It's obvious when he's not out there he is missed with things like blocking, receiving (he had more receiving yards last year than some of our actual receivers) and managing the role in the red zone.

Think about the games he's been out: Oklahoma State (LOST) Tennessee (LOST) We lost against LSU, which is when he got a concussion during the game. He was not out there today (LOST).

With our OLine the way it is, I am not sure if he could have gotten more yards, but I do think we would have gotten better results in the red zone.

As far as YAC, watch the TD last week - the run blocking was just as bad, and he made his way into the endzone with a Cajun still on his jersey.

How can you possibly be overall pleased with your offensive unit when you could not score one single touch down?

Offensive line = overated

Running game = What running game?

The offenisive unit reflected the same fire in their gut that the offensive coordinator did.

There lies the problem.

Ozam said...

Of bigger concern than the loss to South Carolina is the fact that the Dawgs appear to have lost their SEC swagger.

Excluding the 2007 late season run, the last several years have been very ordinary. Throw in our desire to keep the Fulmer Cup in Butts-Mehre trophy case, and one is not presented with a very pretty picture.

I am a big Richt fan. I keep thinking he is great for UGA. He "walks the walk and talks the talk," but his teams just do not reflect the man.

On an unrelated issue....as much the offense flow (or lack thereof) drove me nuts, I was struck be the lack of "hitting" by our D and how S.C. seemed to manhandle us on both sides of the line of scrimmage......

devildawg said...

Thanks anonymous, Bobo Has No Clue doesn't get how important King has been for the UGA offense. BHNC, if you look at the running pattern last year, or at the successful vs unsuccessful running plays today, Ealey breaks his big runs off tackle most of the time, while King is the one you want running off Jones and Glenn. Today, Bobo sent Ealey up the middle again, and again, and again. He had a 6 yard gain off tackle late in the game, but the only other remotely outside run play in the second half that I can remember was the toss sweep, and Georgia seems incapable of running the toss sweep.

Positives for next week: Mallett and Co. did NOT look that great today, and as Bizzaroneck pointed out, our secondary generally performed well today. I thought the offensive pass interference call should have stood, but they picked it up. Justin Houston and at least two other players WILL get to Mallett next week while he tries to find an open man.

Bobo Has No Clue said...

Um, guys, I've watched just as much football as you have. Caleb King doesn't fall forward, and he typically goes down after one guy hits him. He doesn't have breakaway speed, and he's not a bruising runner. He's not shifty or quick, and he doesn't have good balance. He's just a guy that can run through a whole. Danny Ware with more hype.

Sometimes a back makes the O-Line look good - McFadden, Cadillac, Ronnie Brown. Sometimes a line makes a back look good - Hardesty, Charles Scott, and Lattimore today. Caleb King is unable to make a line look good on his own.

If you can name an instance when King has taken a hit head on, and broked through the tackle to gain positive yardage, I would be stunned. It has to be an SEC game, or against Tech. None of this ULL crap.

My point is more this, not that King truly sucks (like Samuel suck - who couldn't even get to the whole sometimes) but that UGa doesn't have a back that can extend a stiff arm, shrug off a bad arm tackle and gain serious yards after contact. Moreno and to a degree Thomas Brown are the only backs we've had in the last five years with an ability to do that.

You might think I'm being too negative, but our running game is not that good. Tell me how you can have no splits on the offensive line - literally foot to foot between the Guards and Tackles, and expect to open up a hole?

Searles is the new Fabris and splits are the new directional kicking.

Where we have really dropped off in recruiting, is OFFENSIVE PLAYERS

The recruits do not want to play on such a conservative failed offense with us playing FAVORITES

Michael said...

Do you really think our recruiting is off?

Maybe you are right.

We have 40 bulldogs in the NFL right now.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/players?college=64

Only 12 of those are on offense.

1 center.
1 guard.
2 o-tackles
1 QB
3 RBs
3 TEs
2 WRs

By comparison, on defense we have:

3 CBs,
6 DEs,
5 DTs,
1 Free safety
5 LBs
2 Safeties.

If you kept count, that's 39. We also have 1 place kicker: John Kasay.

Bobo: "I'm pleased with my unit"

Richt: "We didn’t miss a lot of tackles. He was getting the yards after contact". Hello when you don't wrap up it's called missed tackles and YAC.

What game were these men watching? We got whipped in all facets of the game and once again not prepared to play. It's time these men "man up" and stop with all this BS. I actually saw more talent on the SCU for the first time in my life and I continue to see Mark Richt get outcoached. The UGA program is headed in the wrong direction except for winning the Fulmer Cup on a consistent.

It's kinda skewed to include only one game from 2010 and say that it's 5 years. While I'm not saying this will happen, if we run the table in SEC play this year, your "5 year" becomes 17-11.

Just a thought.

ERRONEOUS!!!!!!!!!! mike boblow is happy with our efforts? what kind of crap is that. typical bobo crap, this is why the guy needs to go. He sucks, his attitude is a cancer to UGA and quite frankly, he sucks at calling plays. we lost because we don't use the talent we have, year in and year out. Turn murray loose. bobo and richt are scared to let the kid do what he does. Dial in some plays, I know what playbook has more than Tailbase ISO up the middle, then play action. If you run it, then mix it up. Right side, left side every once in a while. Put Carlton Thomas and break him to the outside. We are in serious trouble if bobo continues his lame, conservative, old school play calling. I tip my hat to spurrier, he knew what we were doing, because we do the same CRAP every game. he changed up his pass attack to a run attack due to the players he had. We don't have the players to be run heavy this year. It needs to be pass attack, they don't want to win but I dang sure do.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was overall pleased with his unit.

Is he pleased that his offense did not score a touchdown?

Is he also pleased with all the off-season arrests and lack of discipline shown by his players?

Is he also pleased that the NCAA is investigating the stupidity of his players?

Is he pleased that his players led the nation in penalties for most of the last season?

Is he pleased that his players led the nation in negative turnover margin for most of last season?

Is he also pleased that his backup offensive players were put on the kickoff team the last two seasons?

Is he pleased that his offensive line attempts to run block while standing straight up?

Is is pleased that even Mark Jones and Bob Davie openly joke about the lack of discipline in the Georgia program?

Hey guys, you're doing a great job!

Let's go to the pool!
