Of the 3-4 and whether it's 'working'

Former Georgia defensive end Charles Johnson is no fan of the 3-4, at least as far as his alma mater is using it. The Carolina Panther (who also called losing to Colorado "a disgrace") said this week he thought the scheme was part of the problem.

“We ain't never a 3-4 defense. It's not looking like it's working out down there.”

Ironically, Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham estimated Tuesday that his unit has only played out of 3-4 about 60 percent of the time. The rest of the time the Bulldogs have been in a 4-2-5, which Grantham said wasn’t unusual.

“If you watch Alabama, they play a 4-2-5. They probably have been in more 4-2-5 than we have, truthfully,” Grantham said. “It’s more just situations that come up in the game. Maybe the team that you’re playing this maybe fits better. Or it allows maybe a guy or two that you’ve got to do some things that he does well.

“It’s like I told you when I first came here, I think it’s important to build the system that you’ve got to best fit the players you have now. We’re always going to try to put those guys in position to make plays.”

Georgia currently ranks eighth in the SEC in scoring defense (21.6 points per game) and seventh in total defense (324.4 yards).

Last year the Bulldogs were 10th in scoring defense (25.9) and seventh in total defense (339.4).

“We ain't never a 3-4 defense."

It's a little difficult to take Mr. Johnson too seriously with English like that.

Agreed that it is probably best to fit the players you have into the system/scheme that works best for them. If we don't have the right personnel to be effective in the 3-4 this year, how are the verbal commitments that we have coming in on the defensive side of the ball going to fit that system? I'm sure Grantham will be on the recruiting trail trying to lock in some more of his guys, but just curious about where we stand in recruiting (and also with younger guys on the team - Ogletree, Stripling when he gets back) as far as having the personnel to fit a 3-4 D next year.

People, it's not Grantham it's Richt! No enthusiasm from the top = no enthusiasm from the players = poo poo product on the field.

I have defended Richt for too long. I can no longer support what I see from these coaches!

No coach is bigger than the program, UGA must make changes!

Seth,
Is Jarvis Jones available for questions? With everyone asking about the Strength and Conditioning program, can you ask him how it compares to USC? I am of the thought that everyone basically does the same things, but there is something to be said that our players do not fill out the uniforms like Bama does (especially on the lines).

Seth,

I too would like to know the answer to Nick's question. Thanks.

Hi guys,

Nope, Jarvis Jones has not been available for questions yet. On the larger strength-and-conditioning, that's something on the agenda for later.

Ain't never a 3-4...means we ARE a 3-4...nice!

Ginny and jferg,

Make fun of his grammar all you want, but I bet he's making more money than the two of you combined.

Seth,

We greatly appreciate your efforts. I've said it a few times, but I am friends with a Georgia walk-on. He was a powerlifter before walking on the team, and is a really smart guy. He's told me several times that Georgia's S&C is garbage. I just don't understand why CDVH is still at Georgia, aside from the fact that he is buddies with Richt. We've been told by NFL scouts, rival teams and coaches, etc. that our players are weaker than we used to be.

Haha, t-minus 5 minutes until Seth deletes that last comment... it was funny while it lasted, anon.

Georgia ain't Bama and Richt sure as hell ain't Saban. I apologize to all of those in advance who are offended, not to mention embarrased, by my incorrect grammar. However, that in and of itself is not the important point. Richt's competence, or lack of it, and that of his assistant coaches IS the important point.

Charles Johnson needs to leave the coaching (not to mention the correct English) to those who do it for a living.

His argument makes no logical sense: "We ain't never a 3-4 defense"? I'm assuming he means UGA has never run a 3-4 scheme before this year. Just because a team has never run a certain defensive scheme does not mean that same team cannot have success running a brand new scheme. Had Alabama ever run a 3-4 defense before Saban?

Terrible logic, Charles. Just terrible.

As regards strength and conditioning, I've heard all the complaints, and I can certainly see a lack of push on the lines, so it makes sense. But what about last year's combine? The Georgia players dominated at the combine last year, across the board, in the basic strength tests. They looked like absolute monsters at the bench press. How should I reconcile these things? Is the Georgia program building strength but not intensity? What is it?

Devildawg hit the nail on the head. This team lacks intensity and drive. Heck we have the same OL as last year. Did they get weaker? With the exception of Ben Jones there are no SOB's on that line. No one that scares the D. Ben clipped a guy and wow everybody complained, Auburn almost ended Dorsey's career and didn't even get a penalty. Ben was just making a statement, don't F with me. The rest of the line has made a statement too OLAY they are a bunch of matadors. The least they could do is yell look out.

Not trying to be difficult here guys, but.....seems like I remember Saban's 3-4 stuggling at BAMA his first year as well. Give the guy a chance. Honestly, I think we look much improved over last year on D. Scheme is what is giving up the big plays. When you go after the QB you have to get pressure, we haven't done that! Knowledge of the scheme, time and technique will solve that problem. HOPEFULLY?

So intensity may be the issue in the weight room. Any photos or video I've ever seen of the workouts show the players wearing what they want, listening to music, etc. What happen to the days of team issue workout clothes, no ipods, and some meanass drill seageant type in their face? This kind of fits in with players getting to do what they want pre-game, not having Richt run out with them. May sound like miniscule nitpicking but it's what keeps teams from being tight knit come gameday. My $0.02!

Like someone else said ga players tear it up at the combine and at there pro day. I think a little too much is made of s&c. Jeff owens was the strongest player at the combine last year. The same o line this year as last. They didn't get weaker. We have strong and fast players no doubt!
