From the locker room
The last question of Mark Richt’s postgame press conference was a simple one: How do you beat these guys?
“You win a game like this,” Richt said. “But we didn’t do it. We’ll be back.”
Georgia, as you doubtlessly know, is now 3 for its last 21 against Florida, and 2-8 under Richt.
Richt started with the perfunctory credit-giving to the opponent. Then he added one for his own team.
“I thought they fought valiantly. I don’t think anyone could question their effort, or question their competitive spirit. It was just one of those games where somebody had to lose. Unfortunately, it was us. But I’m proud of the players and the coaches, and our fans and the band, and everybody else.”
Still, Georgia is now eliminated from contention for the SEC East, which is now a two-way contest between Florida and South Carolina.
So now the goal for the Bulldogs would seem to be getting to bowl eligibility.
“I’m sure that’ll come up,” Richt said. “What have we gotta do, win two out of three? I’m sure we’ll be fighting hard for that.”
Richt said his message to the team now as to “just keep fightin’, just keep grinding.”
“We’ll come back home, and we’ll get back to work,” he said. “We’ll play Idaho State, play as hard as we can for the Georgia people, and then we’ll hook it up the next week.”
A few other postgame notes:
- Aaron Murray, who threw a pick on his first throw, said he may have been a bit too excited to play in his home state.
“I might have been a little bit amped up,” Murray said. “But that’s no excuse.”
-Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said the play-call on Murray’s overtime interception (which was tipped) was a dig over the middle to A.J. Green.
“We’ll have to look at the film on what happened on that,” Bobo said.
Bobo said Florida blitzed on almost every down, and agreed it was the most pressure Murray has faced all season. But he felt Murray dealt with it well most of the game, with the obvious exception of a few plays.
- Richt said Murray’s second interception, which went off tight end Aron White’s outstretched hands, was “catchable.”
- Washaun Ealey, whose health was a question entering the game, said his knee wasn’t “100 percent,” but was close.
“I tried to fight through it,” Ealey said. “Just go out there when my team needed me and try to make plays.”

Another tough one, not that I even watch the Florida game anymore. I stopped watching these games in 2008.
Would be nice if Bobo would turn Murray lose to check out of handing the ball off up the middle when Florida is playing the run with 1 on 1 coverage (i.e. - the second offensive play in OT). That said, while you can't fault the players effort, their execution was what lost the game. This loss isn't on the coaches, it's on the players not getting it done. Murray was not typical Murray in the first half, and that is probably the difference. You don't win these types of games with four turnovers.
That was a tough game to lose. We had a freshman QB make freshman mistakes. We'll be evenly matched with them for the next 3 years. Keep your heads up everyone... No one is settling for mediocrity. We have ourselves a potentially great QB who needs receivers after 8 and 16 leave and needs tailbacks now.
I bet that is the last time Aaron Murray loses to Florida.
Aj should have gotten more involved in the first half.
I laughed when Auburn hired Gene Chizik. I said Tuberville was a good man and a good coach. But look at Auburn now. Just saying.
Auburn also has Cam Newton. Just saying.
Let's go Mark Fox! At least he can beat Florida.
So frustrated right now, but I've never been in favor of the multitude of bowl games, so playing in a bowl as a 6-6 team when over the half the country plays in them means nothing. The extra practice will only benefit us if we decide to hold AJ out, because we won't have him next year and we know how that works out.
It wasn't long ago I played football myself, but I swear having this much emotional capital invested in 18-22 year olds just ruins weekends.
Happy Halloween. Go Dawgs.
blah, blah, blah...richt can't beat florida...uga's alum and boosters will insist on keeping the game in the "neutral" site, even though it is obvious every new generation of dawgs has the same mental block as the ones before, cause the alum and boosters like to get drunk and stick with things they call "tradition"
Anyone else think we should of atleast tried to go for a field goal with one minute left and two time outs instead of playing for ot?
We do have aj green and Blair Walsh. If any team was set up to do that it is us.
But it might of been a good coaching move to not go for it. It's just easy for me to look back now after we lost.
We can say what we want about Meyers decision to let Rainey play. But letting him play won him this game. Yeah our turnovers hurt us, and we can blame the loss on them. But in five years nobody will remember that Rainey wanted to kill his girlfriend a few months before this game, and nobody will remember the their coach let him back out there on the field to win a game he had to. He took the risk and so far it paid off.
This feeling sucks and is starting to make me question my own sanity. But, I will be back again next week and next year believing we are going to win.
Am I the only one who thought we should have been trying for the field goal in OT? Why were we throwing the ball on 3rd down anyway? Take the points and put the pressure on FL and their kicker. Am I totally wrong on this?
@ Anon. 9:55,
I think you are wrong. You try to get the TD and only kick on 4th down. If you just go ahead and settle for the FG, then Florida can come right in and score a TD, game over.
I just wish they would've called a safer play (if there is such a thing), instead of what seemed pretty risky when Murray had the INT.
9:47, "every generation"? You realize we have the overall series lead right? And you do know that we used to dominate Florida along the same lines as we dominated Vandy, in Jacksonville every year, until Spurrier showed up and started creaming Ray Goof every year? And that we got our asses handed to us during the home and home in the 90s?
It's not about the location of the game.
“I thought they fought valiantly. I don’t think anyone could question their effort, or question their competitive spirit. It was just one of those games where somebody had to lose. Unfortunately, it was us. But I’m proud of the players and the coaches, and our fans and the band, and everybody else.”
That sound like a man that might not have a job tomorrow or in a few months.
why we don't roll out Murray is a complete mystery to me...
People, Mark Richt is going to be the head coach at Georgia next year. There is no need to spend your emotional energy on this. He has brought too much success and is a high character man and the AD is not going to fire him so let it go. Another year like this one and then it could happen, but what good Dawg fan would want another year like this one?
We hired a new DC and we installed a new defense. I understand we have to give him time. We all knew this would be a difficult year defensively. We have virtually the same offense as last year except that our quarterback play is much improved. Yet we can't get the job done. This past summer when writers were talking about how Richt was on the hot seat I was incredulous. What a bunch of idiots! Unfortunately, if Richt can't show significant improvement next year he will probably lose his job. What a shame. Whoever, comes next will be on a much shorter leash. We'll be looking for someone who can beat Florida. Period.
Q: Coach Richt, how do you beat these guys?
A: Win a game like this.
Q: Since you didn't answer the question, how do you win a game like this?
A: (crickets)
Another year like this? I think the last 4 out of 5 years have been like this. Time for a change. Changing the privates will not change things but changing the leadership is a start. You are right it will be at the end of next year that things will change. We are 4 and 5 soon to be 5 and 6 with the hope we will be 6 and 6. We do not deserve to go to a bowl game.
lrgk9 i continually wonder this myself,i have come to the conclusion that it is just piss poor planning providing piss poor performance for our offense .Another thing i wonder is when Stafford was qb as slow as he was about 40% of our run was qb option read now we have a much faster murray haven't seen that play.as for the game it was 2 pathetic teams making plays off of the breakdowns of the opponents. i can't believe we gave up that many points to that stumbling bumbling offence.
rgia spirit. We're still with you Dawgs..CMR and we will be back!!!!
Georgia lost this game, not our coaching staff. We made adjustments in the second half, and it showed. We beat ourselves. Richt looked rather calm after halftime....they knew what they had to do to win.
They almost did it.
Mark Richt is fine, Grantham will be great, and Murray had to have at least one bad game in his career.
Turnovers hurt us, and coaching had nothing to do with that.
The truth is Aaron Murray is another in a long line of Bulldog players to wet his pants in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Four interceptions, a fumble, and a bunch of overthrows. Murray might win a lot of games in his career but not against Florida. Florida will be better next year because of recruiting and the players they have coming back. The Dawgs will step back because of recruiting and who we will lose to the NFL. I love having Coaching Richt as the Bulldogs' coach, but here is the true situation. We cannot out recruit Florida, or outcoach Florida, or play Florida without somebody wetting his pants.
“You never put a win total on any sport,” McGarity said. “I’ve met with half the coaches now and I’ve shared with them the expectations that we have from coaches. You just want to be in the hunt. I think every sport that we sponsor you want them to be in the hunt for championships. There could be circumstances that could lead you to not be in the hunt a certain year due to various circumstances, but you want every sport at the University of Georgia just to be in the conversation.”
Greg McGarity, Georgia is "not in the hunt!" "Where's the bottom?" Georgis hasn't been in the hunt for two years.
It turns out Greg McGarity is quite the Mark Goff Apologist.
Wow we lost to UF, big surprise. We don't look for ways to win these games we look for ways to lose. When was the last time UGA didn't piss itself in one of these games. We dug a nice deep hole then tried to play our way out of it. We almost did but let's try not to make the hole so deep next time cause close only counts in horse shoes, hand grenades and nuclear war.
He doesn't know, that's why he said that no answer. He has NEVER been head coach and does not have the skill set to be a head coach. Mabye his next job, he will learn some of them.
CMR signatures now are and have been undisciplined on and off the field, predictable satisfied with what we are doing, unprepared at Quarterback EVERY YEAR except when Coach Don Shockley forced CMR to promise him that if DJ accepted the Redshirt that CMR would play DJ early EVERY GAME, redshirt Knowshon Moreno so we only got to see him 2 years, letting players out of practice for "injuries" that are not at all apparent, blaming losses on injuries, blaming losses on bad luck bad officiating or blaming losses on the players like CMR has done in throwing Aaron Murray under the bus this morning, underachieving, Winning National Championships ONLY at Fulmer Cup for Most Arrests / Suspensions, consistently erratic, improper technique, snake bit, pitiful at hiring a "coaching staff,"
If he was going to catch Florida, this was his year. Didn't happen. Isn't going to happen and a steady decline in terms of arrests and losses means it's time for everyone to move on. His job performance is going to start killing recruiting and you're dooming his replacement before he gets here.
It's ALWAYS better to fire a year early than a year late. It was a good--but not great--7 year run Richt, but you've lived off of excuses and almosts for far too long. You're not doing any of your guys any good at this point. Good luck.
I love that on this and most other blogs, the posts that are the most outspoken and that call for accountability and transparency to the fans in our coaching staff, all post anonymously. That's how it always is though. Those that have done nothing love to call out others that are the most exposed and have taken the most risks.
A possible 6-6 record with the talent on that team is truly a disservice to everyone who follows the bulldog nation. I have come to the realization that we will never be considered a national champion caliber team under the current leadership. The signs are evident in every loss. We have been making the same mistakes the past 3 years in the games that really matter.Timing of penalities, ball security issues, undiscipline in assigments - the list is the same old same old..I've be a proud supporter of Coach Richt through the years, but I just don't see these issues getting corrected next year or the year after. All will stay status quo because of the success against inferior opponents and unfortunately so will are mediocrity on a national scale..
I know the place we played didn't cause the turnovers and lack of plays on defense. I get that! However, why do we want to keep having all our fans, and players have to go that far every year. Florida fans and teams don't have to go that far ever. None or very little of the money for this game ever gets spent in Georgia. So that means every time (not just the last 18 of 21) our economy looses, our fans loose, and our state looses. We get our asses kicked by their state, their university and their team we are their whipping boy in every way imagineable way. The reason we piss ourselves, is simple, have you ever seen a dog that has been abused and mistreated? Every time you approach them they tuck their tails and piss. Until we get CMR, McGarity and Adams to set the tone from the top down we will continue to be a big joke in Jacksonville!
The two things I would change on our team are as follows:
1- Mike Bobo
2- Rodney Garner
Bobo never changes same offense year after year after year after.........
Garner wrong players, wrong players, wrong players.
So tired of hearing “We'll get'em next year".
I was glad to see Richt acknowledge being proud of the band.....This why I respect him as our teams leader.
Matthew, what now?
Say what you want about the dawgs, but time to move on. I VERY MUCH like our chances against idaho State next week. This is a VERY winnable game and I think you'll see an invigorated Georgia team. We may not win, but we'll keep it close and - well, this is a trap game for Idaho State. GO DAWGS!!!
Idaho State is our bowl game.
CMR is an old school coach from FSU. Does not understand the rushing game...likes to keep former FSU people around like Lilly. 1st game a TE catches a ball for a TD this season. How many did FSU have with Lilly and CMR. About the same.
Bobo...we called every play they ran in OT. Tendencies is not a word Bobo understands. The OT pick. Green was covered with three. Inside the 25 in OT you run it in. Donnan understood that with zone blocking. UF uses a 5-2 and lateral speed. You have to get over pursuit and cut back and play the weak side. Until Bobo, McClendon, & Lilly are fired expect the same results.
It is not about location, players or coaching - It comes down to the advantages of a bye week which the ole ball coach started for Gaytors. When you have an extra week to make adjustments, heal up and rest it is a huge advantage and that is why the series has changed. Until Gaytors lose the bye week or UGA gains ones it will continue like this.
Seeing some of these post are kind of making me sick.
We did lost the came but by no means did we get blown out. We played very very hard. This is a team we rarely beat when were having a great season.
If our players went out there and played like crap and embarrassed the state of ga i would understand some negativity but these kids left everything out there. This wasn't a game that was lost on effort. No blown coverage that caused the loss. A tipped pass in ot by a freshman qb that got us back into the game to begin with.
Our ga players played there hearts out yesterday only to come to places like this and see there "fans" talking about how much they suck!
I understand that everyone wanted and expected us to win this one but why all the extreme negativity? Negativity never helps anything only makes us as uga fans look bad.
I believe more in constructive criticism. We all have the right to say whatever we want and show our displeasure with how things are going but I just don't agree with how most of you are doing it.
Also Florida might appear to be a bad team this year but they are far from it! Look at there losses. A lot of teams would of lost those games. Florida has maybe just as much NFL type talent as anyone in the nation. We lost a close ot game to them by a fg.
I'm very proud of what our team did yesterday it's just Florida was the better team this year. Three points better. Next year I don't think they will be better than us. I'll start taking bets for ga to win right now I'm so confident in it. This team has built a lot of character after a season like this.
Willb....you weren't proud of the band?
Lol, I'd like to get some of what Willb is smoking or drinking. What exactly makes you think that UGA will be better next year..I keep hearing this from the MR sycophants? That and that this a young team with a new D coordinator...as if it's not MR's fault that he didn't play Murray last year or have to fire his DC...
So next year's team is going to be better without AJ Green, Kris Durham, most of the Offensive line, Justin Houston, etc?
I'm all for being optimistic but with some of you morons MR will still be coaching here 20 years from now and you guys will be talking about how great NEXT year will be..
I would just like to remind @12:06 that Georgia had a bye week in 2009 before the Florida game and we lost 41-17.
willb I agree with you 100%!
To Paul @ 11:38. If CMR is fired you can bet that we go after Dan Mullen at Miss. State.
Scooter Ga will be a better team next year. Players leave every year in college. That's just the way things go. Most teams lose there best players each year. Alabama, fla.... A lot of teams will lose there best players and they will be replaced with players who will be there new best players.
Here are a few reason the dawgs will be better next year.
1. We can't get any worse. If you think we will be worse then you must think this will be the worse team in ga history? Look at the talent we have. This will not be a 3-4 win team.
2. Quite obvious. Aaron Murray. We might have the best qb in the sec next year. At the worst second to cam newton. He has shown himself to be the best freshman qb ga has ever had and he will get better each year he plays. He also showed in the first few games of his career that he can play without aj green. He didn't play great but considering it was his first games I think he did pretty good. Aaron murrays great statistical season is not a product of playing with aj green.
3. Our defense has been up and down this year but nobody can deny they are better than last year. Learning the 3-4 is tough. Look at Nick sabans first year at bama compared to his second with the 3-4. It even took the almighty saban a year to get it rolling. Like bama we have talent, we just didn't have the right coaches until now.
4. If Houston leaves which is not for sure he and dent will be the only significant losses on a much improved defense. We have lots of talent on the defense to replace them. We have some great young players. Ogletree, rambo, branden smith, Washington.... You can say a lot of bad things about ga but you cannot say we lack for talent. It's not an excuse for how our def has played this year but it takes time to learn the 3-4.
5. It's looking like were gonna have another really good recruiting class. I believe the best players we will get have not been signed yet. I believe having stafford and now possibly green going first in the draft will be huge for recruiting. Come to ga and we will get you ready for the NFL. Also I think a lot of players will sign with us this year and next to play with Aaron.
6. Offensive weapons for Murray. Green and Durham will be gone but we have a lot more really good players on offense. King will take over as the top receiver and I believe he will do great. Orson Charles could the the best tight end in the nation with a couple of other tight ends that could start on a lot of other teams. I think marlon brown who was one of the best wr prospects in the nation when he got here will start to produce. He came from a small school so it usually takes those guys a couple of years to get going with the learning curve. Branden smith could play a huge part on offense. Even if we don't get crowell we have a couple of pretty good experienced backs who are at the least adequate. Hopefully we get a full year with them without suspensions and injuries. Again just like def our offense doesn't lack for talent.
That's all I can think of right now but we will be better. There are negative things too but i only listed the positive. I imagine we will be picked to finish third in the east next year behind sc and fla but we will surprise a lot of people I think but we might not be any better. It's just my opinion that we will be better.
This season was set up to be a bad one if there ever was one. Although I don't think anyone would of picked us to win 5-6 games. We fire richt, hire a new coach who will want to bring in a new staff of his own and it will set us back for years I think. Think tenn not bama or fla.
If we have another year similar to this I believe we might want to start thinking about a coaching change but I don't think one bad season is reason to fire richt. There are other great programs having bad seasons this year. Texas, Florida... It happens to everyone.

Sorry for multiple post. iPad screwing up.
"I understand that everyone wanted and expected us to win this one but why all the extreme negativity? Negativity never helps anything only makes us as uga fans look bad."
Winning only 3 out of 21 games to a hated rival will cause most sane people to be negative - duh!
Willb:
-"We can't get any worse."
Perhaps not. But do you think we will be MUCH better?
-"Aaron Murray. We might have the best qb in the sec next year."
AM is a good QB now and we're 4-5.
-"Our defense has been up and down this year but nobody can deny they are better than last year."
Talk about damning with faint praise.
-"We have some great young players. Ogletree, rambo, branden smith, Washington.... You can say a lot of bad things about ga but you cannot say we lack for talent."
Our dbs are horrendous. The only one with any promise is Ogletree. Wonder how the dbs will play next year when we lose our best pass rusher to the first round of the NFL draft?
-"It's looking like were gonna have another really good recruiting class. I believe the best players we will get have not been signed yet."
The best players IN STATE are bailing on us. Google "Isaiaha Crowell." One thing that is really killing UT now is that Fulmer couldn't recruit effectively his last few years. The same is now happening with Richt.
-"Offensive weapons for Murray. Green and Durham will be gone but we have a lot more really good players on offense."
In 2008, we had the #1 pick in the draft playing QB, the #10 pick in the draft playing RB, a now-starting in the NFL WR, and a WR who will be a top ten pick last year. How'd that work out? If this staff is good at anything, it's squandering talent.
"We fire richt, hire a new coach who will want to bring in a new staff of his own and it will set us back for years I think."
We should hire and fire coaches every three years until we find one that can win championships and maintain the program at a high level. Look at what Bama has been through the last 20 years and yet they have won 2 MNCs.
It's mullein time and every other delusional fan go to this link.

Show me what part of the entire history of the ga program other than the Herschel years when ga has been as good as they have been under richt. Ga does not have the history that most ga fans seem to think we have.
I want us to win sec titles and nat titles just like everyone else but you guys have to realize what our history has been. We have not been a consistent national power. The closest we have came has been under richt. He is going to become a victim of his own success. He has set a standard that no other coach in our history has had to live up to.
Richt was the one who got you guys thinking that ga should contend for nat titles every year. Something no other coach in ga history has done as well as richt. I know dooley won one but richt is a beter coach. Most of you guys just want to get rid of him after one bad year. A couple below average for richt seasons but this is the only bad season.
@ Willb,
The argument that UGA doesn't have this history full of National Titles therefore Richt should stay is idiotic. You have to look at the conference (strongest in nation), and the talent in and around the state.
The state of Georgia has the third most Division 1 players and the third most NFL players. Based on that fact alone, UGA should be competing every single year. The program has taken a step back, anyone with eyes can see that.
Another year without beating our two biggest SEC East rivals, Tennessee and Florida, in the same year.
Richt is a better coach?? Really?
Wally Butts - 2 Natl Titles
Vince Dooley - 1 Natl Title
Mark Richt - Fill in the blank Willb
Compare Richt to Donnan and Goff. He cannot cast a shadow on the scrotum of WB nor VD.
It's time for Mark Richt to go!
However, the band played exceptionally well yesterday....
Will there e a post on the weekly conference call?
My argument isn't simply ga hasn't won national titles so richt should stay. My argument is maybe some ga fans have unrealistic expectations considering our history.
This season is bad. No doubt about it. It's bad but this is just one season, and mark richt has shown himself to be the winningest coach in uga history as far as winning percentage goes.
Btw nobody did it. Show me in ga's history where we were consistently as good as mark richt has made us. As of yet in uga history we have not been a consistent nat title contender. Rarely have we won our own conference. I'm just saying that most of you guys are expecting ga to always be something they rarely have been.
My expectations of ga have always been high also and the only coach I have seen get ga near my lofty expectations is mark richt. I would hate to see us give up on him so easily. Give up on bobo!
Mark richt is an amazing head coach. His only problem in my opinion is hiring coordinators. He has made bad hirings and failed to make changes quick enough. The 08 ga team should of won a nat title I believe also. I think that was more on our coordinators though. Which with richt being the head coach that was his fault. I think he made the right choice on def and he will now hire a new off coordinator.
Also you can't simply say this coach won a nat title so he is better than that coach. It's not that simple. Many all time great coaches and players go there whole careers without winning championships. The second you win one you are not all the sudden better. I still think mark richt is the best head coach ga has ever had.
With that being said if he doesn't make the right move with the off coordinator position or we have another season like this with the talent we have......
Btw vladdy you say Dooley is easily a batter coach then richt right? No doubt in your mind right?
Well in 77 when he won 5 games or in 79 when he won 6 games do you think he should of been fired?
Are you aware of what happened the next year? We go undefeated and win the nat championship!
Fans like you I guess would of liked to of seen him fired in 79 though right? Maybe even in 77?
Richt 13-11 last 24....nuf said.
5 losses last year....more than 5this year.
Not just one bad year...but a ship that is sinking! And nothing of substance (NC) to show prior to.
My opinion is that UGA has regressed as a program in the past three or four years. With the talent pool available in the state of Georgia, and with the talent we have recruited, we should be in the the hunt for a BCS NC EVERY year (and fans should demand nothing less).
Players come to UGA and are not coached up. They get by on raw talent. They aren't disciplined on or off the field. we lose games because we are out-coached by teams with lesser talent.
Other schools have hired new coaches and have since passed us by.
I really like Coach Richt, but every fan has to ask themselves this: Do you have 100% confidence that he will give us a chance every year to compete for a NC?
I did at first, but I have to admit that I have lost confidence. I just don't see us winning another SEC championship (or NC) with Richt.
look at the cordinators he hires not one proven experienced cordinator.NOT ONE.he hires inexperienced cordinators ,hopefully grantham will be good but he has no previous experience as def cordinator.P.S.why did we ever let Van Gorder go Mark Richt should have been on his knees begging vg to stay.
Ok Let's put this into perspective... The only reason AJ would consider staying at UGA for another year is if he believes it's a winning program and that he can pad some stats so that he would go higher in the draft. Well he'll already go in the first round if he leaves this year, so the question comes...will this be a winning program next year...hmmmmm...maybe two years, maybe three, we've been waiting too long for a national championship, start ranked...end up on the outs...mostly because we can't seem to win against Florida, year after year...this is the worst team Florida has had in about the last ten years...we still lose. What will AJ do...leave.
Look at GA's history? Try looking at UF...they didn't exactly have a sparkling history prior to Spurrier arriving and they have played in 4 title games and won 3! I don't care what our history looks like, history is written every day and it is time we write some new history before we don't have a pen anymore.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. Right now, 63 of 93 of UF's players are Freshmen and Sophomores. Really think we have a chance the next three years? If we can't beat'em when they are young (like in '07), we definitely won't later unless something changes...and losing AJ and Houston aren't what I consider positive changes.
