Pat Dye criticzes Urban Meyer handling of Newton case

Former Auburn head coach Pat Dye told the Macon Touchdown Club on Monday that he was "disappointed" in Florida head coach Urban Meyer for not standing up for Cam Newton.

Dye, a Georgia alum, brought up the ongoing Newton story while speaking to the club, according to The Telegraph's Michael A. Lough. Here's part of what Michael filed from Macon:

(Dye) then went into the Newton situation, noting the trouble in Florida for allegedly stealing a computer. Then he revisited how news came out of Gainesville that Newton had faced expulsion from Florida for a variety of academic improprieties: cheating, putting his name on a paper written by another student and turning in a paper purchased off the Internet.

As was reportedly immediately, such a leak is a federal offense.

“I am disappointed that (Florida head coach) Urban Meyer didn’t step up and say something on that kid’s behalf, because (Newton) left Atlanta to go to Florida and fulfill his dream as college football player,” Dye said. “He made some bad choices and bad decisions, which young people will do." ...

Dye said that Meyer could “have been a hero” by lauding what Newton has accomplished at Auburn and clarified Newton’s departure from Florida, but said Meyer has done the opposite.

[But] Meyer, by all accounts, has not publicly trashed Newton and strongly denied any connection to the illegal leak of Newton’s academic issues.

Dye also told the club that the powers-that-be at Auburn wouldn't be playing Newton if they thought there was any reason he might be ineligible.

“I do know this,” Dye said. “Jay Jacobs and Gene Chizik have unquestioned character and integrity. And if they’re playing him, they don’t know anything either, or any reason not to play him.”

Dye's tenure as coach and athletics director ended in the early 1990s amid an NCAA investigation into payments made to recruit Eric Ramsey.

who asked this NCAA criminal anything?

Why would Urban Meyer want to stand up for a kid who's dad extorted 200,000 from auburn and is about to get them the death penalty

My favorite part of this whole post has got to be the ending:

"Dye's tenure as coach and athletics director ended in the early 1990s amid an NCAA investigation into payments made to recruit Eric Ramsey."

Those 2 clowns he named do not have "unquestioned integrity." LOTS of people are questioning their integrity.

When you have no integrity yourself how do you recognize it in others. Do you even know what it is?

I hate this defense of Newton by saying things like "kids make mistakes, etc." I never once purchased a paper or cheated in college, when are people gonna start being held accountable for their actions?

Amen to all comments. Newton deserves no standing up for. BUT Meyers silence is deafening. Im trying to figure out why Fla is so quiet when Newton would have been the key to their continued gimmick offensive success. Certainly they knew that in '08. If they forgave Rainey for a threat to kill someone then it would seem Fla could forgive for a little stealing and cheating. It is as if FLa wants to act like Newton never existed. Again Fla silence is deafening. More to that story. Also is Meyer responsible for the leak about the cheating???

Please correct these inaccuracies: ramsey was a senior, not a recruit. And he didn't receive payments but instead extra benefits. Thank you.

Dye rips Meyer because Dye, like most Aubies, can only see things from Newton's perspective.

But consider, Meyer knows the whole story on Newton. He knows the true details of the laptop incident, and he knows the scoop on the (alleged) cheating incidents, and he knows everything else about Newton that the athletic department might have swept under the rug before the UF administration forced Cameron's dismissal--excuse me, "transfer".

So Meyer is quiet because he knows the dirt, and he knows Newton doesn't deserve defending. So he chooses to say nothing in order to distance himself from Newton.

UGA fans may disagree, but Meyer is not an idiot.

If you have nothing nice to say, then do not say anything at all.
Meyer protects all his players (like any coach), so his silence is deafening.
The kid had 13 traffic incidents, 3 academic fraud incidents, 1 stolen laptop, and we should expect Meyer to say he is a good kid?

Hey Anon, the extra benefits were payments.

"And if they’re playing him, they don’t know anything either, or any reason not to play him.”

Say What? I guess denial is the same as knowing the truth and can't be connected to turning a blind eye. Auburn continues to sink deeper into the abyss.

I hate it for the SEC but Auburn is going to get what they deserve.

Bill, thats what I am saying. Meyer knows all the dirt. Including if Fla has any dealings with pay to play and Newton. If I didnt make that point earlier. I think Fla is involved as much as Auburn allegedly is. Thats why we are hearing nothing from Fla. Will it ever be proven? Who knows? But I dont think Cams Daddy all of a sudden decided he needed bucks for his kid in 2009. Daddy was selling his boy out since his high school days.

furthermore, Meyer knows the full scoop of Rainey and his charges. But Meyer has chosen to not distance himself from Rainey. But Meyer has to go home to a wife and daughter knowing he didnt take a zero stance policy on abuse of women. Meyer has no integrity. His lack of actions speak to protect himself and Fla only. Lets watch it all play out.

Anybody else see where Justin Scott-Wesley is probably backing out of his verbal commit to Ga? Looks like he's leaning towards Louisville now.

Don't know why he would do this. Come to Ga and play with a great for qb for atleast two years or go to Louisville and anything could happen.

This would really disappoint me as Wesley is the fastest wr recruit in the nation.

@Willb

I hear he's more interested in track than football. Rumor is Strong offered him a 50/50 time commitment split between track and football while Richt wants football to take priority.

If the kid is more focused on track, let him run track. I'd rather have someone that wants to be a receiver and focus on running routes. DeMarco Robinson could easily fill his spot.

Thanks, Seth, for unbiased and straight-forward journalism. The last paragraph proves you can give readers the facts, leave your opinion at the door and let readers draw their own conclusions.

Great job! Ignore the haters. Unfortunately, it seems the intelligence quotient of commenters has dropped significantly as of late.

Violating FERPA, aka the Buckley Amendment, is not a "federal offense." To write that implies it is a criminal offense. It is not. First, people do not violate FERPA. Educational institutions violate FERPA. Second, the worst case scenario for violating FERPA is for the federal government to withhold funds from the educational institution.

The continued desire by people to make the release of Newton's academic record a big deal while understandable is misguided.

The federal government is not going to do anything to a state university for one of its employees--whoever that person may be--releasing the academic records of one of its students. There will be no far reaching investigation. The only inquiry if one occurs at all will be a letter of inquiry from the Department of Education.

You guys need to go find another tree to bark up.

ANON 2:37, no one will be accused, arrested, charged, tried, aquitted or jailed by the efforts of this blog. We are all average guys talking about the stories in the media. If you have a problem with the way the media portrays a story then go to them.

Cam Newton is 21 years old .How much longer do we have to wait to start considering him a man instead of a "kid"?
