Morning glory: Boise State, UGA hoops, and football recruits

I don’t know how many of you stayed up to watch it, but it’s official: Georgia will not open next season against the defending BCS champion.

Boise State lost at Nevada in overtime in a classic finish. The Broncos should have won in regulation after an improbable pass set up a chip-shot field goal. But the kicker then forgot how to kick.

So does that take a bit of luster off of next year’s Boise State-Georgia opener? Perhaps a little, since many assumed the Broncos would at least be coming off a year when a lot of people felt they should’ve been in the title game, or would be on a long winning streak.

All we do know is that Friday was a good day for the BCS cartel that controls college football and likes to avoid controversy: Auburn and Oregon stayed unbeaten, Boise State went down, and TCU is left as the only potential “people’s champion.”

Now let’s see how the SEC championship and the Cam Newton investigation go.

A couple other notes as we get ready for Georgia-Georgia Tech:

- The Georgia men’s basketball team is now 0-for-2 in Orlando after falling to No. 21 Temple. The Bulldogs’ last chance to salvage something out of the Old Spice Classic is Sunday against Manhattan.

Still, it hasn’t been a bad trip for Georgia. It lost to two teams, Notre Dame and Temple, that will be in the mix for the NCAA tournament, so that should help the Bulldogs' RPI. And they were in both games, with Trey Thompkins certainly not back to full strength yet.

But it does mean that next week’s two games against UAB and Georgia Tech are now pretty important. It would behoove the Bulldogs to enter SEC play with a couple good nonconference wins on their resume’. At this point, Colorado and Saint Louis aren’t in that category.

By the way, for those anti-playoff people in football who say the basketball regular season doesn’t matter, here we are in late November talking about the importance of nonconference games. Trust me, as someone who’s done this for years, and spoken to selection committee members about this, it matters.

- I had a chance to watch a couple Georgia recruits on Friday night: Nick Marshall’s Wilcox County High School team lost in the state quarterfinals to David Andrews and Wesleyan.

Marshall is a pretty intriguing athlete prospect: At cornerback he had two interceptions on Friday night, and as a quarterback he rushed for more than 100 yards and passed for 206. He’s a legit 6-foot-2, so the defensive coaches can use him at cornerback or safety.

But he also has the offensive skills to be used on that side of the ball. He can run, and while I know it was just Class A competition, Marshall made more than a few accurate downfield passes from the pocket. He also made a few questionable decisions, but his arm is legit.

Andrews, a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, was on an offensive line that paved the way for teammate Kyle Karempelis to rush for 300 yards.

- As for the present-day Bulldogs, here’s the breakdown on Saturday’s game from myself and colleague Coley Harvey. We didn’t offer up a prediction, but this is how I would sum it up: Georgia should win convincingly, perhaps handily, as long as it doesn’t make too many mistakes.

Here's hoping Crowell commits to UGA today on his visit. Last night he had over 300 yards and 5 T.D.s.When he gets past the line of scrimmage he's gone. Definite program changing type player.Go Dawgs!

The hoops team also has a non-conference game later in the year with Xavier. That's another one that will be huge since we weren't able to beat ND or Temple.

UAB beat Arkansas in OT last night in Little Rock to go to 4-1. Hogs shot 3 for 21 from behind the arc.

What exactly is the NCAA contenders? No need to mix your metaphors when you can just mix your cliches, huh?

Fixed the typo. As always, thanks for the very polite correction.

Did anybody else think that the Boise kicker made the field goal at the end of regulation? I would like to see a view from the bottom of the post.

Also what was that crap they were saying about Nevada not having field goal post that were as high as other bigger schools? I thought all post were the same. I also thought your kick could go higher than the post as long as it went between them. That kick looked like it went in between the post to me. Maybe a better view would change my mind though.

Maybe it's just the shorter post throwing me off. I thought the Boise kicker might of made the fg in ot too.

The basketball team had laughably high expectations given to them the last few weeks

They are a team with several pieces but the depth is still little and compared to UK and others, UGA is still significantly worse

It will take another year

Can someone please explain how the hell Oregon is number one in the polls ahead of Auburn. Auburn before this week has beat South Carolina, LSU, Clemson, Miss St, Arkansas, and Ga! This week they beat Bama on there home field after being down 24-0!

Oregon's best win was against Stanford. That's about it though as far as big time wins yet they are a near unanimous number one in these polls?

I know one or two really doesn't matter right now cause both of them get to play it out and see who number one is but come on how is Auburn not number one? They have gone through an impossible SEC schedule undefeated so far. Any team that is undefeated in the SEC should be number one.

I think if Auburn loses to SC in the SEC championship game they should still play in the national championship game. Who else? TCU? A big10 or big12 one loss team? Auburn has been much more impressive then all of them.

Just like most others here I hate Chizik, and Fairley but I can't deny that what they are doing is special. I know others don't agree but I always want the BCS champ to be from the SEC. No matter what the situation is I always try to think what would benefit Ga the most, and Auburn winning the National Championship would be good for us.

Avoid controversy? Letting auburn continue to play with their ineligible quarterback is not controversial? If most of the allegations against auburn and cam are true, we are watching the Charles Manson of cheating college schools get ahead by cheating and with everyone knowing they did it. Everyone in the rest of the SEC should be ashamed that auburn is even in the sec much less going to play for the national championship.

Auburn runs that state.

@Willb

Because believe it or not, there is a lot of SEC jealousy out there. There are PLENTY of voters out there who resent the SEC's dominance the last few years and the fact that the majority of the media consider the SEC by far the best conference. These idiots (i.e. Kirk Herbsteith, Craig James) that played in or are affiliated with other conferences intentionally don't want their crappy conferences to look bad.

The SEC runs college football.
