McGarity says UGA 'exhausted all avenues' on Fairley hits

Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity confirmed that his school spoke to the SEC office about the hits made by Auburn’s Nick Fairley in Saturday’s game.

“We exhausted all avenues of communicating to the conference office,” McGarity said. “And then it’s up to the SEC to make the decision. There’s really nothing more that we could’ve done. We just followed SEC protocol in how you communicate and how you deal with questions.”

The SEC announced late Tuesday that Fairley would not be suspended any time, and any discipline would be dealt with “internally.”

McGarity was asked if that surprised him.

“I probably better not comment on that,” he said. “I need to stay away from that. I don’t want to get into any type of trouble or conflict with the conference office.”

Fairley’s helmet-to-back hit on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray drew a 15-yard penalty. Fairley also delivered a late hit to Murray’s knee, which was not called a penalty, that caused the quarterback to leave the game. Murray did not practice Tuesday and his status is day-to-day.

Last month Georgia center Ben Jones was suspended for one half for a chop block he made at Mississippi State.

McGarity said that suspension was decided after the SEC notified Georgia, which then reviewed the play and agreed that discipline was warranted.

“Coach (Mark) Richt was bothered by it,” McGarity said. “He was disappointed in our student-athlete and took appropriate action, and felt like it was the appropriate consequence. And I have to give Mark a lot of credit for taking that position to do the right thing. And the young man paid the consequence and missed the first half of the Colorado game. And since that time he’s learned a lesson.”

McGarity then declined to comment on Auburn not disciplining Fairley.

“We’ve got enough issues with our program rather than worrying about someone else’s program,” McGarity said.

"dealt with internally"

aka other Auburn players will be encouraged to play like Fairley because the SEC will let them get away with it

I agree that Nick Fairley needs to learn from this incident, but I completely disagree that Ben Jones "learned his lesson" from the suspension he served for his chop-block. There is film that clearly shows Mr. Jones cut-blocking Nick Fairley both at the point of attack and away from the play, and film showing him attempting to gouge Nick Fairley's eyes. Both of the players involved need some sort of disciplinary action.

The AD is no better than the coaches. They all need to be replaced.

"Last month Georgia center Ben Jones was suspended for one half for a chop block he made at Mississippi State.", yet no suspensions for the 30-some-odd players and staff on the field for the scuffle. Get over it.

What about all the Georgia players that left the bench to run on the field? Per SEC rules those players should be suspended. Fairley was flagged for that hit. Let's give it a rest.

HAHAHAHAHAH....TOO WEAK TO PLAY A MANS SPORT!!!!

Get your laughing in now, Auburn fans. Whether you admit it aloud or not, you know and I know that Cam Newton will be deemed ineligible, at which point Auburn will vacate all wins this year. The sooner you come to terms with this, the better. And the fact is, it took a paid athlete to break your 0-4 skid against us... Ouch. Take a note from the man you hate (Nick Saban) and win games the right way...

Check out this site. Ga has the second highest net revenue of any college football program in the nation. Why does the SEC and NCAA treat us so differently? Were the top team in the SEC at making money for crying out loud yet other teams get away with stuff we never would!

Look at the bottom for the table that shows the rankings.

With the game's result up in the air, Fairley was on the bench, nursing a shoulder injury he gave himself trying to beat up Murray. And where was Murray? Making plays.

Who's the one the one "too weak to play a man's game"?

I don't know about everyone else here but I don't know who to root for! I always want an SEC team to win the national championship but I so badly want to see Auburn get demolished!

Is there a scenario where I can get both? It doesn't look like any other SEC team could play for the national championship. LSU is a huge longshot. I still think Alabama might be the best team in the nation but there's no way they make the title game. They can beat Auburn and still might not get in the BCS.

Isn't there a two team maximum from each conference that can go to the BCS bowls? That would be Auburn and LSU right now it looks like. If I had my choice for a team to represent what the SEC is all about in the BCS championship game it would be Alabama or possibly LSU. Only LSU has no offense. I wouldn't want to see them play Oregon.

Anyways right now it looks like Auburn is our only nat championship contender. If they make it I will have a hard time rooting for Oregon or Boise St over an SEC team. As much as I don't like them it's the best thing for us if they win the BCS championship.

Absolutely ridiculous. Way to put the hammer down on problematic plays! Leading with your helmet is apparently okay now. Good job, SEC.

Am I the only one who is surprised to see Auburn fans obsessed with this and still continue visiting a UGA blog? If UGA was undefeated and looking at a BCS bid, the last thing I would be doing is trolling an opponents blog. I think Auburn fans are hyper-defensive about all this because most people who are not fans of either school are talking about the poor sportsmanship of Auburn in the game.

The SEC big-whigs are a joke. And as for all the Auburn trolls on here.. It's been noted. What once was a respectful rivalry has now turned into something much more menacing... I look forward to rooting against Auburn university in every aspect of their university from athletics to academics. It's one thing to root against a team like Florida bc of their cockiness, self centered fans, and boastfulness. It's a complete other animal to harbor, promote, and root for a team that plays dirty, pays athletes, and preaches that it's ok to cheat. Auburn university gives the SEC a bad name and I think every university has caught sight of this.

I'll say this and leave it at that:
You mess with the dawg, you're gonna get bit.

Wow Matt. So going onto the field compares to someone trying to paralyze a QB and end his entire career.

Really?

Stepping onto a field compares to jeopardizing someone's life and health?

Amen we've got more than enough problems with our own Program such as 20 Losses the last 5 years 4 a year and such as # 1 Fulmer Cup National Championship this year and such as all 5 wins this season add up to being against teams 15-31 this season and such as a poor recruiting class 2010 and now again for 2011 after all the 2009 recruiting class was wiped out leaving or being kicked off.

Caleb Darnell King # 4 is up to 396 total yards 2010 rushing and receiving for a grand total of 2 TD rushing and 0 receiving. Game 12 is next week. Guess what ?

I TOLD YOU SO on both accounts.

Mike said...

Clearly UGa players didn't learn anything from Jones's prior suspension for a chopblock as they committed 2 more chopblocks against Fairley (only one of which was flagged).

But yes....*sarcastic cough*....only Auburn players are dirty.

Anonymous said...

Mike, question for you. If Auburn players were equally dirty as everyone else, why would the national media arbitrarily choose to pick on Auburn and single them out? Let me guess, conspiracy? I love it when you guys use that argument. Please use it. It's entertaining for all of us. I guess the national media just hates Fairley. Definitely a more logical explanation than saying that Fairley is actually a dirty player (supported by flags and videos). Definitely.

Anonymous said...

But, Mike, I will give you props... by arguing that Auburn players aren't the only dirty ones out there, you at least admit that Auburn players are dirty. That's a step in the right direction.

BuLLdawg, your unrequited love for Caleb King has made you bitter.

Last year the only comparison you'd use was yards per carry and you conveniently ignored the fact that Caleb led the TEAM in touchdowns.

This year, now that Caleb's yards per carry is the highest, you'll ignore that and switch to other stats.

It's sad how obsessed you are with this kid. Of all the disappointing aspects of the season, he is always your target.

I think you might need help.

I love how Auburn's response is...UGA chop blocked Fairley earlier in the game so it was okay for him to 'spear' your quarterback and drive his helment into his knee/shin later in the game.

Chop blocking is legal in a one on one situation, always has been and always will be. It becomes a penalty when the DL is engaged with one offensive lineman and another chop blocks. UGA doesn't teach their lineman to block in a manner that will cause them to get penalties. As someone who has coached before here is what typically happens...The OL blocks down (you count from the center and work outside, the OT has Fairly who is lined up on the outside shoulder of the guard. At the snap the OT fires into Fairley to cut him, simultaneously Fairley fires into the OG in front of him and the OG is caught up with the defensive player in front of him, the OT has committed to his block and the result is an illegal block. It happens but it is not taught and it is not intentional.

Now Fairley's late hits...may not have been taught but they are clearly tolerated by the staff at AU and apparently the SEC and it is very obvious that it is intentional.

Someone needs to earhole Fairley and de-cleat his ass. Those of us who played, know what I mean.
The Georgia players should have been gunning for him the whole game. He clearly drives the QB's into the ground like it's the WWE.

On the broadcast at the start of the game, the announcers said something about Fairley playing dirty against QBs. That was before anything had happened in the game.

From announcers.

Fairley was out early in the game trying to contain a nipple slip that came out of his sports bra.

Man I would really like to meet BuLLdawg and talk to him face to face about the dawgs. From how he acts i assume he is a little boy who is trying to look smart with all his numbers. I wonder if he could have a Intellectual conversation about the Dawgs without bringing up stats that make him look more and more childish every time.

I am big on numbers also but I understand that a good chunk of the time they do not tell the whole story. You are a disgrace to those of us who love to quote stats!

If the national champion isn't going to be Ga I want it to atleast be a team from the SEC. I don't understand why someone would think otherwise. We play is the SEC and the SEC is looked at as far and away the best conference. SEC schools will normally get the benefit of the doubt in the BCS because we produce the BCS champion every year.

Next year Ga could easily be in a good position in the BCS rankings and I would like for us to be playing in the conference that produced the national champions. I would love to see the SEC completely blow out whoever they play in the BCS title game so everyone can continue to see the difference between the SEC and everyone else.

If Oregon blows out Auburn in the BCS title game how would that help us? Next year everyone would be saying the SEC is overrated. A one loss SEC team would be less likely to get consideration for the tit game.

I want to see Auburn get smoked too but I don't know if that would be the best thing for us. Also if Alabama, SC, or Oregon blows out a team we hung with into the fourth quarter what does that say about us?

Joeski said...

I pretty much expected this. The SEC league office is going to be reluctant to directly intervene in these types of situations for several very good reasons:
1) they don't want to undercut the authority of their officials on the field,
2) they don't want to get into the business of retroactively officiating the games, and
3) I doubt they want to introduce the possibility that some league-office action is going to have a direct impact on the outcome of past or future games.

Obviously, if, say Murray got put in the hospital by that hit from Fairley, they would be forced to do something. But unless it's an extreme circumstance, I'm sure they're going to take the school officials aside and privately say "Hey, you need to do something about this..." (with the implied threat that failure to do so reflecting poorly on the school in future dealings with the League Office).

That's just the way those types prefer to work.

Props to Army Dawg: spot-on your explanation.

ChrisDawg: I'm guessing BuLLcrap posted some statistics again. (I don't know; I skip his posts now.) Advice to you: Don't bother. It has been repeatedly proven that he cherrypicks statistics that support his emotional response, rather than actually reviewing all the statistics and using them to come to a logical conclusion. You would only be bashing your head against a brick wall of illogic, and let me tell you, that gets very tiring, very fast.

Woah. If a tit game is involved that changes everything. Go Auburn!

ChrisDawg said...

I agree willb it is very important for an SEC team to win the national championship! How could you not realize that PTCDawg? Im not critisizing your football knowledge because i dont know you but you can't be so short sighted. Look st the bigger picture.

PTC DAWG said...

The bigger picture is we recruit against AU.....

LSU I might be pulling for, mainly because I like the Hat..but AU, no f'in way. Not that it matters who I "pull for"...not that it matters who any of us pull for.

The fact is, I don't AU to gain any more of a recruiting advantage. There's my logic. Same with FU to the South.
