Washington aims to keep the "newbie" behind him

Cornelius Washington is doing his best this spring to put some distance between himself and Ray Drew, the highly-touted recruit who will compete with him at outside linebacker.

Here's the opening excerpt from my story today on the rising junior outside linebacker:

ATHENS - Last year, Cornelius Washington was competing with a fifth-year senior for a starting spot. This spring, he’s competing with a freshman who hasn’t even arrived yet.

When you look at him, however, it seems Washington shouldn’t be competing with anybody.

“Cornelius made a big hit in practice,” defensive end Derrick Lott said last week. “And I talked to him, and I (said), ‘Cornelius if you do this every time, every practice, every day, you’ll be real good.’ ”

So why hasn’t he been yet?

You can read the rest of the story here, including some interesting comments from Washington - who is never afraid to say he's going to stand up for his position:
“I’m not the type of guy that’s gonna let a newbie come in and take anything from me,” Washington said. “The coaches don’t give away any positions. You have to earn everything you get. So I’m just gonna go out and earn it and then let my actions and my playing speak.”

Just more talk. Impress us Mr. Washington on game day please. We hungry UGA fans anxiously await.

Poor ole' Washington. He things UGA doesn't just give people positions. I have a feeling Mettenberger & Gray & other recent transfers at LB & RB would ALL disagree with him. Williams led the team nin tackles last G-Day--he transfered. Mettenberger led the offense, he transferred. The guy who had 10 tackles against Florida? Transferred. Georgia has a bad rep of not playing players who earn it.

Anon @ 10:57

Is that even English?

I pray that your only affiliation with UGA is that you grew up in the state, because you surely don't make me feel good about my degree.

And do me a favor, find me one example where a player, coach, or administrator said that UGA does not play players who have earned it. (That means, btw, messageboard loudmouths like yourself don't count.)

You can't, can you? Seems like that would be something that would come up on the recruiting trail, at least.

Just more proof that you anon posters are completely clueless and have no idea what you're talking about. Sorry, but grow up and realize that your uninformed opinions do not shape reality.

Ummmm.....didn't Mettenberger transfer because he was kicked off the team due to sexual assault charges and not becuase the coaches named Murray the starter?

Murray earned it and will continue to earn it. That's the kind of player he is. All of our players are earning each day in practice buddy. Man, I'm ready for G-Day! GATA Dawgs!!

awwwww, did somebody get upset?

Remember anon, always have sources to back up your outlandish statements. it's the only way you earn credibility.

Oh wait, you don't have any.
