Richt: 'I've coached football for 25 years, so I know what the hell I'm doing'

Mark Richt got a bit feisty in Macon last night.

It happened when the Georgia head coach was pressed by a fan during a question-and-answer period last night, as reported by The Macon Telegraph's Mike Lough:

“I’ve seen teams throw the ball and win the national championship; I’ve seen teams run the ball and win the national championship,” Richt said. “Believe me, you can win the SEC doing it more than one way. Steve Spurrier, when he was at Florida, he chunked the ball, and he won how many SECs?”

And then the temperature rose a little bit more.

“I see your frustration, I understand your frustration,” Richt said, politely but sternly. “I wasn’t born yesterday, I’ve coached football for 25 years, so I know what the hell I’m doing, OK?”

You can read the entire story here, including what the fan said to raise Richt's ire.

The moment was reminiscent of a couple instances last December in the lead-up to the Liberty Bowl: First, when the normally polite Richt dropped a "damn" in a press conference, and second, when he defended his record by pointing out he was one of the top five active coaches in terms of winning percentage.

To which the fan replied, "10-6, Coach Richt. Did you know what the hell you were doing in the Liberty Bowl?"

@Prince_Lightfoot: To which Richt responded "sorry you're not happy, I have Ray Goff and Jim Donnan's phone number right here for ya."

Everyone with half as many wins as a college football coach as Richt stand up and be counted.

It's about "damn" time Mark Richt started showing some "hell", fire, and brimstone in his game face and interviews! Good for him!

i like it get fired up

spurrier had a pretty good running game and defense as well

tired of the BCS fetish-just win the SEC and let the chips fall where they may

Richt said probably the biggest disappoint the last few years is probably that non one has solidified the running back position, as far as offensive performance. That says it's wide open for Crowell.

Oh, also Murray is the best quarterback in the SEC.

Evil Richt...I like it.

Richt should grow a goatee this fall to embrace the 'bad guy' image.

I wish Coach Richt would get as mad at the opposing coach as he does his own supporters. I've studied weather patterns for 25 years and I think it's just as hot in Jax for UF as it is for us.

I'm glad somebody else realized that the reason we aren't winning is because Richt doesn't hate the other coaches enough. That's why Donnan was so successful against Tennessee. I also believe that this affects weather patterns as you do.

The question made to Richt does sound like the typical uneducated rant from a UGA football fan. Some UGA fans question McClendon, others go after Bobo, some will say it's S&C, etc.

Of course, Richt has the resume and track record of a competent coach. But it is clear his teams have underperformed the last two or three years. And Richt has yet to prove he can compete against the other heavyweight coaches of the SEC.

From 1985-2000, Richt had a good run, largely on the jet stream of Bobby Bowden. 2000-2005 was a really good run at Georgia which Richt can take most of the credit for. 2006-2010, except for 2007, has been lackluster. So, Richt's had 5 strong years to which he deserves a lot of credit, in his 25years as a coach.

The landslide fall from 2007, has been dramatic. The team went from scoring 35 against ranked teams, to just 15. Went from 11 wins, to 10 to 8 to 6. Rush game went from #5 to #7 to #10last few years.

Post 2005, with Saban, Meyer, Chizit, Miles, Richt's been outshined by better competition. The competition in the SEC wasn't strong in 2000-2005, and Richt enjoyed the friction free ride.
