Caleb King not expected to play in Liberty Bowl

Barring a late turn of events, Georgia will not have its second-leading rusher when it arrives in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl.

Caleb King has told a source close to him that he is not making the trip because he is academically ineligible. It was not clear whether the issue was related to grades or another matter.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt said after Tuesday's practice that any word on academic issues wouldn’t come until Wednesday. He also wouldn’t comment when asked specifically about King.

“We won’t have the final report until tomorrow, so we’re gonna have to wait,” Richt said.

King has missed four games this year, two because of an ankle injury, and two for a suspension following an arrest, for failure to appear in court on a speeding ticket.

The junior from Norcorss, who started five games, has 430 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and is averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

Caleb's going to have to take AND pass a lot of classes next semester and a few more over the summer terms to gain his eligibility back. This could be a sign that he's been planning on leaving early all season long. I hope he can turn this around and get his degree.

C'mon Isaiah Crowell!!

King has always struggled with being academically eligible. He changed high schools 3 times. Now as a junior there are no more "easy" college classes left to take. $5 says he will go into the draft and be picked up as a free agent.

This guy was a bust from day one. Hope UGA can get a Latimore or a CJ Spiller. OUR football program is in big trouble.

Leaving early? Where does he plan to go? Europe?

Danny Ware did something similar, got picked up to be on a practice squad initially and ended up playing for the Jets, I think. Caleb is going to have to bust his butt to make a NFL squad, but college isn't for everyone. If he's going that route, I wish him luck.

Danny Ware left early.. Has done pretty well for himself. If Crowell comes, I bet King sees the writing on the wall and heads for the NFL. Carlton Thomas may transfer as well, who knows. Side note: I hope Figgins sticks at FB. The thought of a 6'4 240lb beast in the backfield is exciting. Plus it opens up the TE spot for Rome, who should redshirt. With White, Charles, and Lynch already there, TE is already set with playmakers.

Anyone know Figgins' 40 time?

Don't know Figgins' 40 time, but it'd make for interesting play-calling if Bobo utilized a FB screen. Something else for the defense to think about.

Have to echo the sentiments of "leaving early?" LOL.

Danny Ware had over 200 more yards rushing in his 3 years and was splitting time with Kregg Lumpkin AND Thomas Brown. Not to mention he was better in space out in the flats (ie-receiving). Also, going undrafted and scraping by for work as a 3rd stringer is where the bar is now??

I wish the kid best and hope he comes back strong next year but this has been one to forget for Caleb.

Danny Ware played for the Giants, not the Jets. He won a Super Bowl ring with them. I'd say he made the right decision.

As someone who grew up in the Gwinnett area and watched this kid shine (granted, at the HS level), I wish him nothing but the best moving forward. The "student" in student-athlete is clearly not high on Caleb's list.

That said, I'd be absolutely baffled if he made an NFL roster. I can POSSIBLY envision a practice-squad invite, but the kid just doesn't have the prototypical body type (nor the mental fortitude to overcome his size) to succeed at the professional level. He's above average at PassPro and has decent speeed when in open space, but a vast majority of his collegiate highlights involve superior offensive run-blocking.

Just my two cents - I've no doubt been wrong before.

Richt hitched his wagon to Caleb King instead of Jonathan Dwyer...sometimes the best laid plans just don't work out...

Another overrated RB out of metro Atlanta. One of the most unproductive RBs in the history of UGA, and UGA has been known for great RBs. Another reason position coach McClendon should be dropped from the staff.

BulldogBen said...

Dawg19, not for nothin but the training staff got Super Bowl rings on that Giants team as well.

Just sayin.

King & Sanks.....

Both busts!

I believe King will be as good as Ware in the pros. Ball recruited King not McClendon when he was running back coach. He also recruited Dwyer hard but he he chose Tech. This makes it more critical to get Crowell, let's hope he doesn't do like Dwyer and choose another team.

It's so disappointing to see everyone complaining about Caleb not taking his studies seriously. We didn't recruit him to be a Rhodes Scholar. The University of Georgia is the #18 public university in the country and if you haven't pulled the stats there are plenty of Alumni that wouldn't get in these days! For all the bitching the fans did about our 6-6 season I find it hard to believe you'd want him to spend more time studying. Many students struggle with grades, even without the pressure of being an athlete, because well it's the 18th public university in the country not the local community college. So cardiac surgeon isn't going to be Caleb's calling but he's a damn good football player! So wish him luck, hope he passes and let the kid do what he's good at!

I wish Caleb the best. whatever he decides to do.

From a hype perspective, I understand the "bust" calls. But when the kid has his head in the game, he's done well for us. The problem is getting his head (and butt) in the game. Only 80 carries for the season. Missing 5 games.

NFL teams won't draft him with all the baggage. He'll definitely be an UDFA with an outside shot at making a squad.

Outside of the hype, I don't consider his play a bust. He has the same yards per rush attempt as Knowshon in 2007. And I think he was 2nd on the team in TDs last season (behind AJ). Last year, he was definitely our best RB picking up the blitz, executing the screen, and in goalline packages.

I'd like him back if I had a choice. He'd only mnake our team and depth better. If he goes, he goes.

Brittany,

Caleb Darnell King is NOT a great football as you muse herein.

The University of Georgia the # 56 (Fifty-Six) Public University according to the latest US News and World Report (Georgia tek is # 36.)

NOT # 18.

Caleb King scored as many touchdowns this year as the number of times he was arrested here.

He told Ken Malcome that being the Tailback at UGA is a "GRIND."

He told the gal who was kind enough to LOAN him $ 500 the day Spring Break started that he would publish NUDE pics and videos of her on the Internet if she ever asked him again for the money.

He has feigned injuries, failed to catch passes, failed to even show up in the big games against good run defenses, and has 430 yards rushing as Mark Richt's STARTER on Offense at Tailback, one of 10 returning starters for Mark Richt on Offense this season - culminating in SIX freaking losses.

4-Loss season average the 5 years since Caleb King was declared the # 1 RB in the nation by 2 publications and the # 1 overall football player in the state of Georgia.

Mark Richt is on the HOT SEAT all next season BECAUSE OF CALEB KING

You're right BuLLdawg, King is not a great football...... Or basketball, soccer ball etc,. Nice pick on Southern Miss last night- good thing you're not old enough to have a bookie.

BuLLdawg said...

4-0 on bowl games and lead the pool.

It is against the spread, my pick of Southern Miss with our spread of 3.5 is a WIN.

Thank you.

And, Caleb King is only good at getting arrested being a thug and flunking out, certainly not catching passes or even bothering to show up in the big games since arriving on campus.

Where are you picks ?

Besides you picking Georgia tek to beat Air Force.

Wrong again buLLdawg. Georgia is the number 18 public university, and in the 50s overall. Public universities and all universities is not the same thing. Get a clue.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Bulldawg you're an idiot. Please learn what a public university is.

S. Miss was a 2.5 point dog at game time in Vegas. You lose, but it's alright, I already knew you weren't perfect, none of us are so quit the charade.

He is pushing Jasper Sanks territory. And, honestly, that may be an insult to Sanks who actually ran for 900 yards in 1999.

BuLLdawg ALWAYS attacks women posters.BuLLdawg are you a misogynist who craves the warmth of a man?

Crowell should have no impact on Caleb. Crowell does not have to pick up pass blocking in his H.S. offense and will likely red shirt learning before playing for Bobo. This is assuming Crowell sees UGA as the kind of team that has the discipline and ability to win championships he needs. Malcolme is the threat for Caleb's playing time.

BuLLdawg you posted at 6:45 that you are in a gambling pool, well you of all people should know that is illegal. I trust after all your self-righteous rants about players getting tickets, I'm sure you will turn yourself in to police rather than show yourself to be a hypocrite.

This doesn't bother me one bit!

Ealey is far and away the more talented back. Ealey is an extremely underrated back. If he gets all the carries he can be a 1100-1300 yard back.

I went to the same High School is Caleb King. The poor kid is as dumb as they come (truly not being a negadawg or mean)... He failed the graduation test 3 times, and when he wanted to get tested for disabilities (so he could get test accommodations), the Head Coach wouldn't let him because the tests would make it evident that the kid wasn't legitimately passing his classes. Thus, he transferred to a private school where he didn't have to take the graduation test (GACS).

My best girlfriend from highschool tutored him in math and said he was at a 6th grade math level...

I am surprised that he made it this far. And I am pretty sure GRADES are the issue.
