Athens held hostage: Day 3

OK, I wanted snow. I'll admit it. Even at the advanced age of 34, I still act like a kid when I hear the forecast, wondering what it'll take to have school canceled.

Well, school has been canceled all right. Classes at UGA are off again Wednesday, and who knows about the rest of the week: While it hasn't snowed since early Monday morning, the six inches of snow on the ground have pretty much remained there because the temperature hasn't gotten much above freezing, and the forecast for the next few days doesn't offer much hope either.

The weather has apparently put the football offseason in a bit of a holding pattern. We had the Marcus Dowtin news on Tuesday, but that had been in the works for awhile. A.J. Green smartly got his announcement out of the way Sunday, and is on his way to Arizona to train. (He's not taking classes in the spring. Green and UGA have said he's about two semesters away from getting his degree.)

I'm told that the other juniors contemplating the jump - Justin Houston, Brandon Boykin and Cordy Glenn - are all back in Athens and attended a team meeting on Sunday night. That doesn't mean they're coming back. They could have come back to gather their things and officially inform their coaches they were leaving, but even that process has been put off by the snow.

They have until Saturday to enter the draft. Maybe there will be news today, maybe there won't. No way of telling, although if I see Justin Houston on cross-country skies on his way to the airport, I'll let you know.

As for the coaches, spokesman Claude Felton estimated that about half of them got out of town to recruit on Sunday before the onset of the storm. The rest are trapped or either feeling very adventurous.

So, with nothing to do but count ice cycles or work on my novel, maybe we can do another mailbag, if there's anything left over from Monday. Feel free to post your question below.

Wanted to see what your thoughts were on Fran's comments on the radio in atlanta last friday. In my opinion he's a low class loser for some of the things he said. You don't go public with that kind of talk about your own program.
Now, I hope CMR and crew get things turned around just to spite him.

What are the keys to the game tonight in Nashville?

If it turns out that getting the administrative duties off of CMR's plate does have an effect next season, how much of the blame for not doing that earlier should land on CMR vs. the departed Damon Evans? Is it possible that Evans is partly to blame for the current state of Georgia Football?

What is it about Coach Fox's abilities that have lead to the quick turnaround? Are the recruits much better, was Coach Felton a subpar coach other than the SEC tournament run, are the ramifications of Harrick just now ending?

With our big win against Kentucky, we finally cracked the AP top 25, something I've been waiting for ever since Jeremy Schapp showed up on Campus 8 years ago, but Lunardi still has us 6 spots out of the tourney on Bracketology. What, in your estimation, does Georgia need to do with the conference schedule to get ourselves off the bubble and in to the tournament field for sure?

Would you quit focusing on how many wins we need to make the NCAA tournament and instead focus on how we win the SEC regular season?

10-6 in the SEC would guarantee it, IMHO.

What are you thoughts on Vandy being the team to beat this year in the East (in basketball - probably not football) Granted, they just lost to SC in OT, but they've put together a pretty impressive resume based on the first 14 games. Wins over UNC and Marquette, and close games (though losses) to WVU, and Mizzu. I haven't seen them play, but they are always a solid tournament team. Seem like every year they are never talked about though...

What are your thoughts on the vandy game tonight and the rest of the season for the basketball team? What about robinson all sec or thompkins all american, thanks

anon 10:57..i agree with your perspetive. For those who have run any kind of organization, you know how hard it can be when your higher ups are either incompetent or/and have you doing their job too. A good director makes doing your job easier, not more difficult. People would be greatly surprised how much poor administration can hinder performance of any team (sales, construction, sports, etc..)

Seth, I've been skeptical of the"our boys aren't as big and strong" argument but Tarkenton brought it up again. He claimed it was confirmed by his contacts with pro scouts. Give us an unbiased opinion. After spending time in Columbia and observing the rest of the SEC do you think we look smaller and weaker or is our problem talent and technique?

1) Has anyone ever asked Bobo why we run so many play action plays? We run it so frequently that defenses expect it and don't even bite on it anymore.

2) When Richt first got to Athens we ran a lot of no huddle and hurry up plays that didn't allow the defense to sub in players. At one point the refs had to slow us down to allow the defense to substitute. Why have we gone away from that?

Anyone know if the UGA/Vandy game is televised tonight? I'm in ATL and have Comcast.

Its on SEC Network, which is the CW or something similar in Atlanta I believe. Its channel 64 here in Charlotte

Seth - thanks for keeping us entertained during the snow/ice.

Not to harp on UGA football, but how much of an impact does our administration and "tone at the top" have on our football team? After reading the UGA as next year's Auburn got me thinking....the school cracked down on tailgating on North Campus and basically outlawed home night games (granted we weren't that good this year so that may have had something to do with it). On the other hand, you've got Auburn rolling Toomer's Corner after every victory.

"how you, uh... how you coming on that novel you working on? Hmm? Got a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Got a, got a, got a nice little story you working on there? Your big -big novel you've been working on for three years? (Voice rising in pitch) Hmm? Got a, got a compelling protagonist, eh? Got a, got an obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Got a story brewing there? Working on... Working on that for quite some time, huh? Yeah, talking about that three years ago. You've been working on that the whole time? Nice little, uh, narrative-- beginning, middle and end? Some friends become enemies some enemies become friends? Eh? At the end your main character is richer for the experience, yeah?
Yeah? Yeah, you've got, uh-- no, no. You deserve some time off."

The UGA/KY game was on WPCH here in Atlanta...802 on my Comcast. UGA/VANDY is on the same network. SEC Network as stated above.

James.... In my opinion you are a low class loser for accecpting the current state of the UGA football program while burying your head in the sand.Thank goodness we have people like Fran who sees whats really going and not afraid to speak their mind.

You can also watch the game online at espn3.com. ESPN3 is clutch if you live outside of traditional SEC country.

Hey seth, Whatever happened to Jakar Hamilton? I know there was a lot of hype around him coming in to the season and then he started a few games and then kinda faded away...what happened to the "hit-man"?

Ben said...

What's your aspiration: to write the Great American Novel or to be the next Stephen King/John Grisham(/Nicholas Sparks)?

Nick said...

What writers do you respect or have influenced you?

Is Aron White still breathing? Not a peep from him since the Florida overtime.

I hate to see Dowtin go. I expected him to be our best defensive player at the end of this season not named Houston. That is worse than potentially losing Boykin in my book.

i like Drew's question, what happened to the "Hit Man"??? I didn't see him hit anybody..

Fran is an infomercial spokesperson and doesn't speak publicly about anything without getting paid to do it. I would like to know who these scout contacts are. Smells fishy to me. Was he too busy talking up Tony Robbins when Goff was coach?

Uncle Dawg said...

What did Fran say that wasn't true?

Seth, my question is are you going to respond to any of these questions in the next day or so, or should I check the blog next week?
