Some hoops, some football recruiting

Here's my game story from Saturday's Georgia thumping of Mississippi State.

ATHENS - Perhaps it was only appropriate. Georgia’s previous game was decided on a rebound, and not in a good way. So when it came to recovering from its most stunning loss of the season, rebounding was the emphasis.

And it proved to be the difference. Along with hot shooting, good passing, bench scoring and plenty more. There was little that went wrong in Georgia’s 86-64 win over Mississippi State on Saturday.

“I’m pleased with the results (Saturday),” head coach Mark Fox said, in quite an understatement.

Georgia's RPI rank is now 42, and it's strength of schedule ranking has moved up considerably, to 66, from earlier this season.

Meantime the SEC East Division is officially a jumble:

Florida .... 4-1
Georgia .... 3-2
Kentucky ... 3-2
S. Carolina. 3-2
Tennessee .. 2-2
Vanderbilt . 2-2

If you weren't following my Twitter feed during the game, Isaiah Crowell, Jonathan Jenkins and a bunch of other recruits were also at the game. The home fans did their job, doing various chants of "I...sai ... ah!!!!"

And at one point, in a moment that was actually kind of uncomfortable, about seven or eight young fans, probably students, appeared on the concourse behind the section that the recruits and football coaches were sitting. They were carrying three white signs extolling Crowell to be part of the dream team. This went on for about 30 seconds, then they moved on. I didn't see if Crowell turned around and noticed.

Crowell supposedly still plans to announce near signing day, while Jenkins, the massive nose tackle, could decide sooner, later ... who knows. Then there's the Kent Turene situation. The inside linebacker from Lauderdale, Fla., who is committed to Southern California, was also part of the recruiting weekend and there were rumblings he had committed. But he told the Orlando Sentinel that he had not. I guess we'll find out.

Well Bama is still cleaning our clocks along with LSU ,Auburn , Clemson and now South Carolina on the verge of making a big jump in recruiting. These teams seemed to be filling their needs while UGA signs more tight ends. just saying....

Anonymous said...

Stop ending sentences with "just saying." We know you're just saying it, because we just f'ing read it. God UGA fans are stupid.

Anonymous said...

Yes, we got another commitment from another Tight End. That gives us 5 TE on Scholarships led by Orson Charles.

We also have gained 5 commitments from 5 cornerbacks. We already have Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith.

What we don't have are linebackers to replace this great exodus of linebackers - while we say we are a 3-4.

We don't have any fullback. We need tailbacks. We need OL. We need DE and Nose Guard. We need Free Safety and we need Strong Safety.

bigeasydawg said...

The thing that ticks me off about this whole situation, is the fact that I can't read the comments on any freakin UGA story without getting ticked off. Even a positive one. If Seth or somebody on some other blog wrote a story about Mark Fox curing autism, one of you idiots would link it to Mark Richt.

Don't support Richt, fine. I understand and have no problem with it. But just shut up and stop being so negative on every post. This was a post about a good bball win and some recruiting news. Just save your venom for the football posts at least. I wish all of you had went to tech.

1. "We don't have any fullback." We already have Zander Olgetree.
2. "We need OL." We already have 5 verbals in this class for offensive linemen.
3. "We need DE and Nose Guard." We've got one DE and a DT already committed, and we're still in the hunt for 2 extremely good ones.
4. "We need tailbacks." We're in the hunt for the number 1 tailback in the country
5. "We need Free Safety and we need Strong Safety." Corey Moore is projected as a safety, and Alec Ogletree was coming on strong last year.
6. "We already have Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith." That's 2 DBs, and we use more than 2 a lot. Not to mention Smith has gotten burned before so it wouldn't be bad to have some backups.
7. "What we don't have are linebackers to replace this great exodus of linebackers". We've got some good talent coming up this year (Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel) and we've got 2 commitments from LBs along with those rumblings of the USC kid. Not to mention anyone from last year's class who steps up.

While this recruiting class isn't perfect by any means, a lot of the problems you've listed have already been addressed (Specifically Fullback and OL), and if we land a few more recruits more of the others will be taken care of.

If UGA basketball played in the SEC West, they would go 12-4 in conference. The West is awful

Thank you Dawgwalker07, I am sick to death of nothing but negativity from all these experts (that really don't know squat). CMR is working hard to get us a good class coming in and we have made some changes in S&C so give it a Damn rest! If we suck in the fall this year and we are no better this year then cut loose and Bitch. You know Funny how when the team has a bad year, our fans decide to become bad fans along with them!

Basketball team looks good to me.

Recruiting is going very well too. I have no clue what some of the complainers are talking about, and frankly, I don't think do either.

I have gotten to the point where I skip the comments from Anonymous. That guy probably can't eat a bowl of ice cream without complaining about something.

Anonymous said...

Give it up Bulldawg!! You're ruining this blog and now you're just posting anonymous!! We're not stupid! We know it is you!!!

Josh said...

This blog is seriously being hurt by Bulldawg, who is now posting as Anonymous because Seth removed a few of his post. Dude, if you hate Mark Richt so much why don't you go somewhere else. This is a UGA sports blog for UGA fans! You say you're a UGA fan, but all you do is cry and moan about Mark Richt and how terrible he is.

Mark Richt has had a few tough years, we all know that, but all coaches have off years and the good ones learn from their mistakes and correct what needs correcting. Mark Richt IS a good coach and he will turn this thing around. We have a very good recruiting class coming in and frankly I'm getting excited about next year.

I feel sorry for you because you're practically rooting against your so called team because you hate Mark Richt so much. You are what I like to call a sofa coach. You sit in front of your TV crying about how you can do so much better, but the fact is, you don't have a clue what it takes to run a football program and if a guy like you were in a position to run a program you would run it into the ground because you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Get a life...

Hey Bigeasy... the story is linked to football you jack wagon. Cant you read ? Getting out recruited every year by Bama , LSU, Auburn ,Clemson and now South Carolina is something to Bitch about. Rodney Garner is a clown and must go. Losing to Central Florida is inexcusable. Winning the Fulmer Cup is inexcusable. Kicking a damn field goal 4th and a inch inside the five yard line is inexcusable. If some of you namby pamby fans dont like the blogs then quit reading them and go drink your Kool Aid.

I'm not so sure that Turene actually said he hadn't committed. The Orlando Sentinel article says that "Turene's reply to a text asking if he could confirm the decommitment said simply, "No." In other words, he refused to confirm. I wouldn't confirm either if I had an official visit scheduled to Tennessee in a couple of days.

As to our friend "Anonymous" and his negativity: I suspect it's just that BuLLdog douche posting in smaller, multiple soundbites. This is his way of getting around being banned by Seth (which I appreciate). My advice would be to just act like his mom and don't pay him any attention.

Anonymous said...

Notice the way the first Anonymous poster spelled Georgia Tech in his comment ("Georgia tek")? Anyone remember how Bulldawg always spells Georgia Tech? I'll give you a hint, it's the same way that the first poster did. ...very strange coincidence... surely it couldn't be Bulldawg posting anonymously on this blog?!!

Greg said...

I know 3 old old children who cry less than some adults who post on here.
if UGA having a losing season is hurting you this bad, then maybe you should stop watching college games and worry more about real world problems.

Richard said...

Seriously Seth, consider banning BuLLdawg and all of his anonymous identities. He's hurting the blog by hijacking the comments and derailing any sort of meaningful conversation.

A similar thing happened last year with Paul Westerdawg's Georgia Sports Blog. A bunch of spamming posters went on there and created a lot of havoc, to the point where they had to enable comment moderation. (They also spammed this blog and David Hale temporarily enabled comment moderation.) The amount of comments dropped significantly, to almost nothing, to the point where now nobody visits that once flourishing blog. That blog is now so dead it's depressing.

Don't let the same thing happen here. Get rid of the cancer before it spreads. The 1st amendment be damned, these idiots are ruining the blog for everyone else.

gastr1 said...

Richard,
The Georgia Sports Blog is dead because they don't bother to post anything. What they posted most of the time was pathetically bad anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter much that they have stopped.

Just kinda waiting for the other shoe to drop over there.

BuLLdawg you're posting trash at 3 in the morning on a Saturday night and all Sunday morning? I pity your loneliness. Try encouraging people and you may make a friend. Try being more pleasant and you may have a social life.

A lot of you have an inflated perception of UGA football history I see...well let me clue you in on something....CMR is the best coach to EVER grace the sidelines in Athens!Dooley the dummy you say? Please!Vince was a VERY average coach who squandered a whole lot of talent.True he won a NC in 80 but he had the greatest player in college history and was 1-3 in THE big game. The man was not some legendary gametime coach I tell you. There were a ton of folks happy to see old Vince get the hell off the sidelines when he retired.Goff and Donnan had similiar coaching records to Dooley at Uga too...7-8 wins a year....then comes this Richt guy from FSU....11 years later...anything less than 10 wins is a down year!Rather amazing how the perception of the program has changed under his watch.
Now CMR all of sudden has lost it,he can't get it done anymore, his coaching staff sucks, the S&C program sucks, blah, blah, blah. Then there are those comments that always get me to chuckle.."I have lost confidence in CMR's ability to lead this program back to what it once was".Excuse me?You pompous asses! This is the guy who made UGA relevant again in the SEC.Now Mark has his faults too...he is a bit stubborn,a little wacky at times and loyal to a fault with his staff.Success breeds arrogance which eventually leads to delusions if you aren't careful which ultimately leads to a fall.I don't think we have a S&C problem...5 different Sec teams have won a NC in the last 5 years...does this mean all had this great S&C programs?Hell no...we ran off 4 straight against Aub and I have YET to hear how great that Tiger S&C program got them over the hump...I think it had more to do with that Newton kid.

No I think the problem in Athens is the talent has dropped off since 07 period. We chased a lot of Fla kids from 06 on and came up short while at the same time we took a silly ass "WE ARE UGA" arrogant attitude with GA Hs programs in recruiting....meaning we were slow to offer, took forever to scout and generally acted like an ass to a lot of HS kids and coaches and it backfired. The problem was we missed on a lot of great instate kids and that should Always be the heart of the program..sure Stafford,Moreno,Green,Murray etc are great players but it was those Greene,Pollack type of kids who brought home the hardware and he's been missing those kind of kids here lately.

This year looks to be a step back to CMR's roots at UGA....give me the best in Ga and we can play with anybody. We should own Augusta,Atlanta,Columbus and South GA in recruitng and untill we get back to that the program will struggle.I know last year's class really opened RIcht's eyes to this...is it too late?Naw the man can coach..of that I have no doubt...he needed his dose of humble pie and he got it.I can understand it...the guy spent 20 years as an OC and Hc without ever having a losing season!Damn good coach IMO but Tubbervile told the truth after watching practice in 09 when he said the UGA talent level wasn't what is used to be.I think Mark finally got the message and look for him to reclaim that recruiting zeal he brought with him from FSU starting this year.DAWGS rebound in 11 mark it down!

Anonymous said...

Aaron you nailed it. On a side note, as Georgia focuses in state, it's amazing how little talent comes out of Augusta and Savannah although they are pretty big cities.

Anonymous said...

well don't go knocking dooley he was a good coach.no one ever accused his teams of not being able to block or tackle.blocking and tackling has been in decline since richt's arrival well tackling started decline after BVG's departure.don't get me wrong i ain't a richt hater i want to see dawgs win with or without richt.i won't debate his successes with you but a majority of his wins was against cupcake teams.i may be wrong just going off of memory,sometimes that is very dceptive,but i believe we use to play clemson which had some good teams back in the day it was another heated rivalry.i don't remember these easy schedules but my memory could be off.As far as needing safety's don't forget we got cootie coming and i don't mean that to be fecitious.i think he will turn out to be a very good player the kid can tackle.{dawgofdasouth}

dawgofdasouth, I really hope you're a fan and not an alum.

AaronGreen, I agree with everything except the S&C comment. It became perfectly clear to me at the Ok. St. game over two years ago that our guys were not in the best condition they could have been in....

Anonymous said...

Seth, get rid of BuLLdawg and his anonymous alter ego. Is slander and spamming enough of a reason? Can't you block someone's IP address?

Joeski said...

Some of the anonymous posts are from BuLLsh**, but not all: syntactically and choice of words support that (nice catch by a different Anonymous).

Still, there are others, and I really find it ridiculous that they can't even be bothered to post a nickname to go with their negative comments.

Ultimately, to me, the issue is this: if you consider yourself a 'fan' of a team (fan is short for fanatic, after all), you back your team through Hell or high water.

You don't like Richt? That's fine, but you keep it to yourself, because he isn't being fired this season, and all you're accomplishing is making yourself look like whiny little self-entitled bitches.

Seriously, this is 'Sports Fan 101' I'm giving you here. Are you all really such spoiled brats that you imagine that UGA is somehow entitled to 10 win seasons and SEC championships every year? We don't play in the freaking Big East, we play in the SEC: the toughest conference in the nation!

What really makes me chuckle is the fact that these attitudes make it perfectly clear that the shit-talkers here have never actually played on an organized sports team. The first thing you learn being on a team is to be positive and supportive at all costs, and only bring up the negative when there is a chance that it will be productive... and while we may not be on the football team, we're on the team of UGA football fans, and as such, should follow the same discipline.

GROW UP OR GTFO.

Glad to see that a lot of bloggers are getting tired of the Anon's and the harsh negativity! It is fun to have some good conversations and share opinions both positive and negative if done in the right spirit and for the right reasons. Come on Seth, help us out on this one just a little!

1. "We don't have any fullback." We already have Zander Olgetree.

ZANDER OGLETREE IS THE ANSWER ? YOU SEEM TO BE AGREEING WITH ME, RIGHT ?

2. "We need OL." We already have 5 verbals in this class for offensive linemen.

YOU EXPECT THEM TO BE COACHED BY WHOM ? AGAIN, SOMETHING FUTURE, RIGHT ? NAME 1 RECRUIT ON OL TO PLAY THIS 2011 CRITICAL SEASON FOR MARK RICHT ? AGAIN, YOU SEEM TO BE AGREEING WITH ME ?

3. "We need DE and Nose Guard." We've got one DE and a DT already committed, and we're still in the hunt for 2 extremely good ones.

DE TO PLAY NEXT SEASON AND FINALLY GET PRESSURE ON OPPOSING QUARTERBACKS ? NAME HIM. DT TOO. THEN, WE SEEM TO AGREE WE NEED A NG AND DE AND DT AND LINEBACKERS AND SS AND FS ?

4. "We need tailbacks." We're in the hunt for the number 1 tailback in the country

AGAIN, CLEARLY YOU AGREE WITH ME YET AGAIN, RIGHT ?

5. "We need Free Safety and we need Strong Safety." Corey Moore is projected as a safety, and Alec Ogletree was coming on strong last year.

COREY MOORE IS YOUR ANSWER ? COREY MOORE ? GET REAL.

3-4 DEFENSE WE PLAY. NAME THOSE LOST FROM THE LINEBACKER CORPS AND NAME THEIR REPLACEMENTS BY DEPTH CHART POSITION.

.

.

Cease telling the majority of us that we are bringing the program down to not accept this the last 3 years, and you say we have to accept it more than 1 more year.

The recruits do not accept it either. The vast majority of the fans and all the recruits do not accept this which has been going on. Blair Walsh doesn't accept it. Thomas Brown does not accept it. Stacy Searels did not accept it. And, then there is you - bringing this # 11 football program all-time in 1-A wins, down.

DISNEYdawgs.com sitting there squirming in their seats to come up with yet another set of EXCUSES and SPINS, are the major reason why the team feels entitled. Instead, you must demand more than this of them, or you are a Richt Apologist drinking Kool-Aid dragging this # 11 All-Time Football Program into the Ground :

It's not a talent issue, but coaching and discipline, which has brought us this these last three years :

2-10 last 3 years vs teams who finished in AP Poll Top 25

BuLLdawg - your sorry bowl picks showed you lack Analytical and Forecasting ability when it comes to college football. You bragged you were in a illegal gambling pool with your picks, after all your self righteous ramblings about arrests, why didn't you turn yourself in. I think 72 hours in a cell with that big bellied guy called Buubba would straighten you out. At least you wouldn't have access to a keyboard living down in your Mom's basement.
