Over-rated ... Yeah, be quiet

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the "overrated" chant was played out and stupid.

Georgia head coach Mark Fox does too, or at least he did on Saturday after his team knocked off No. 10 Kentucky. The crowd started the chant in the Wildcats' direction as the seconds wound down, leading Fox to tweet this after the game:

"But please do me 1 favor, next time please chant underrated not overrated. UK's a great team-not an overrated one. Today we were underrated."

I'm not sure Georgia will be underrated much longer. It may make it into the Top 25 when the polls are released Monday; If not, it will at least get plenty of votes. Beating Kentucky is an attention-getting win - unless you think Kentucky was overrated, and therefore it didn't mean much to beat them.

(Crickets ... I assume.)

Kentucky didn't look like the rock-star type team it was last year, when it had John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson. But it has some very good players in Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and Brandon Knight. The Wildcats are just going to take a bit longer to jell, but are very capable of making a run deep into March.

Georgia, meanwhile, is the veteran team, and with two all-SEC players to boot. The reason it wasn't being talked about as a contender to win the East was because it didn't have the time of signature wins that vault a team into that conversation. Saturday's win changes that.

Here's my story about the game.

Just a great win for the team. Anyone have any early predictions for win totals and any tournament appearance?

Tompkins was so smoooooth yesterday. Oh what coulda been if Trey was up to speed when we faced ND and Temple.

Thompkins is up to speed now though, so the rest of the SEC better watch out!

I always thought chanting "overrated" was stupid. If Kentucky was, in fact, overrated, then what does that say about this win?

Yeah, never understood the chant unless you were ranked higher than the team you just beat and you can rub their nose in it a bit. Still not my style, but last night . . . yowza.

My friend and I both agreed that last night might have been a way-point on the trail which we're all look back on in a few years with great fondness...

I get what you're saying Seth. And good point. "Overrated" has always been kind of a dumb chant.

But is your message really "Yeah, be quiet"?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the opposite of what you want fans doing after a huge upset. How about "Yeah, chant something else" or "Yeah, coat yourself with peanut butter" instead?

Why no mention of the Fran Tarkenton comments on the state of the program Seth? Has Claude threatend to take the medias bowl swag back?

Seth...just a little bit of conceptual thinking for you:

There's a reason why people loved David Hale - his unbiased analyitcal writing was top-notch.

There's a reason why people loved Larry Munson - he adopted the Bulldogs as his own family, and his commentary was always about "us" and "we" not "it" and "them"

Pick one of these two approaches...but don't be mediocre and unattached.

Who cares what word Seth chooses in the blog! It's his blog and if you don't like it then quit reading it! The point here is the over-rated chant. I completely agree it was embarrassing and it made me think back to the peanut butter kid and how embarrassed I was about that.

Pretty much dead on, if the other team is over rated then it means your win wasn't as impressive. Chant, U G A, U G A it sounds great to me!

Let us chant "over rated" if we want to. If we were ranked #1 and beat the #10 school it still applies. Chanting "over rated" is just about hurling insults at the defeated- and that is fun. The winners get to choose how to insult the losers.

Besides- chanting over rated is easier to chant that - "We've never won much before so we don't know what to say".

Let's chant "over rated" every game. In fact, lets chant it even when we lose. I like it.

@ Anon 3:57 PM -- If you read my post you'll see no information about whether or not I like the blog. In fact, I do. I was merely questioning the title of his post and the suggestion that fans "be quiet".

If you cannot understand the above and distinguish among arguments, sorry. Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension.

Seth you will have to excuse the BB fans, they are not used to winning games against anybody much less a top ten team. Besides the ones chanting that don't have enough sense to realize that they are running down their own team's victory.

Kentucky is overrated. Dawgs will run out of gas down the line. Bank on it. Next year UGA will be wallowing in the mire with its football program.

I hate that chant! It is stupid and actually would make the win less meaningful if true.

It always cracks me up when uptight people get so worked up about stuff like this.

The black jerseys are the reason we lost to Alabama too!
