Updates on Houston, strength staff
There’s just two days left for Justin Houston to announce his decision on whether to go pro, and so far all remains quiet on the Georgia linebacker.
All we do know at this point is that Houston is in Athens. Whether he’s still mulling things over, or he’s made a decision and just waiting to announce it, remains a mystery.
Steve Pennington, who was Justin Houston’s head coach at Statesboro High School, said Houston hasn’t returned his calls or texts. Houston’s brother is also in one of Pennington’s classes.
“And even he doesn’t even know. Seriously,” Pennington said. “It’s either weighing on him very heavily, or he might not know yet. I don’t know. But I’m real surprised that it’s been this quiet. Maybe he’s just real torn.”
Houston who finished the regular season as the SEC sacks leader, then was passed in the postseason by Auburn’s Nick Fairley. Houston has been expected to make the jump, but evidently Georgia coaches are trying hard to convince him that returning for his senior year would elevate his draft stock.
Longtime NFL draft analyst Mike Detellier, who is based out of Louisiana, believes Houston could end up a late first-round pick.
“He’s coming off a really big season,” Detellier said. “I mean a big-time season for him where he was very productive, and with so many teams running that 3-4 or variances of it you can understand what he would bring to the table.”
Strength staff update: Former player Thomas Brown has come back to Georgia as a full-time assistant to new strength and conditioning coordinator Joe Tereshinski, UGA confirmed on Friday. John Kasay Sr. is also on board as a part-time employee.
Clay Walker, who had been an assistant, will be “phasing out” of the strength program, to use UGA’s wording, as he finishes up his PhD.

thats good to hear about thomas brown. I remember they would always say that pound for pound, he was the strongest guy on the team. He must have been doing something right.
I just wonder how much of Brown's pound-for-pound status was due to crazy genetics vs knowing how to work with all different positions & body types.
genetics vs. knowledge- I think he will be an asset no matter what. He's always been a motivator so that in itself is better than how things have been in recent years for the S&C program.
Thomas Brown will be there more for motivation and demonstration rather than the x's and o's of how/what to train.
Hopefully he will be a great motivator for the guys on the team. However, that remains to be seen.
Education & training matter. The best programs aren't pulling in ex-jocks to run their S&C programs. They're getting highly educated, skilled & trained professionals (see Scott Cochran or Mickey Marotti). Nothing against Brown or old man Joe T, but with the resources we have, this is a head-scratcher and completely against the grain of modern s&c.
Actually Thomas Brown is a certified personal trainer and nutrionist. See he not only has the credentials, he has the instant respect of the players as being someone who has been there and done well. Just my opinion.
Hello, I know Arnold, Mr. World, personally. He is interested in coaching Georgia in the strength program.
I don't know much about strength and conditioning but I do know that when you are in close proximity to Thomas Brown it is astoundingly obvious that he is in freakishly good shape. His body literally looks like it was chiseled out of stone. I sure hope it came from hard work more so than genetics. If so, he should have much to contribute.
Here's to hoping houston stays. I'm sure he'll do what he feels is best.
I think a second season in granthams defense could open up a lot more exciting blitz packages (ie moving houston around and sending him in from different angles). I didn't see the 3-4 defense that's supposed to confuse a collegiate qb this season. This should be one of the big things that grantham offers to justin.
How is Thomas Brown a nutritionist? His degree is in public relations, he isn't a nutritionist. Stop kidding yourself, Anon.
After time in our revamped weight program, Zach DeBell should be BEAST on our o- line next year.
Yeah after turning down Florida and schools like Clemson and Tenn, I feel fortunate we got him. I expect DeBell to be a monster at tackle next year too.
Hey Blogman!
Perhaps an interview with Mr. Thomas Brown would be a good filler piece for the off season. It seems like there is a lot of background on him being thrown around that is a bit sketchy.
Thanks.
Yes, Fairley passed Houston in the post season for TFL, but he also had more TFL per game with 1.71 vs 1.42. Seth, don't try to act like NF passed him because he had one more game. The per game stats favor the Lombardi winner!
Mr. B.M. -
What's up with the disparity in number of responses between the white/blue backgrounds?
For instance, this post on the white page has no replies, vs. 15 here?
Thanks.
DURN IT! Grey background, grey.
I enjoy the info I get from this blog. But I hate all the anonymous chicken sh%$ bloggers that are to lazy to sign a realistic name and just go on and on like they really know something. When the results come in this fall if there is no improvement in S&C THEN BITCH ALL YOU WANT TO until then give the men and players a chance!!
Thomas Brown... pound for pound the strongest player on the Bulldogs squad.
My wife and I still joke about how often the CBS crew repeated that line.
@ Mike,
What does posting a realistic name matter? You don't get more credibility just because you sign as "Mike" instead of Anon or something else. I sign on as 'James Doakes', a character from the show 'Dexter', all the time and it doesn't matter. Names are meaningless on the interwebs.
There are plenty of trolls who come over here and talk trash about our program so just ignore them. The internet is mostly full of anonymous folks running their mouths so get over it, say your piece, and go on living your life.
IF you can't make up a name, I don't read your drivel.
Thanks for the insight, PTC Dawg.
