Dawgs to Watch No. 17: Bo Fowler
Bo Fowler's job is pretty simple get the ball from the line of scrimmage to the holder without any complications.
As most footballs can attest, however, that's a mission that tends to go awry for longsnappers at the most inopportune times.
That's why, as unfortunate as the circumstances surrounding Fowler's move up the depth chart to starter during last season's Sugar Bowl were, the experience did a world of good for the senior from Union Point.
"It was awesome," Fowler said. "It gave me a ton of confidence just going in there and knowing I could do it."
Fowler got his shot at snapping in the Sugar Bowl after starter Jeff Henson was arrested on DUI charges.
In spring camp, head coach Mark Richt said Fowler was battling Henson for a permanent hold on the starter's job, but the battle didn't last long. Henson was arrested again just days before preseason camp begun and earned an indefinite suspension.
"Bo's worked hard, and we have a lot of confidence in Bo," Richt said. "Before Jeff got into this issue, Bo was already beginning to snap extra points and field goals, and Jeff was doing just the punting. They knew in the spring we didn't name a starter at snapper. We were competing between those two guys. So it wasn't like Jeff was guaranteed to be the snapper anyway."
Now it's Fowler's job to lose, and with freshman walk-on Ty Frix the only other snapper in camp, Fowler's grasp on the starter's role looks secure. That, however, doesn't mean he's taking anything for granted.
"Coach Richt's told me I was possibly going to be the man," Fowler said. "There's always competition out there, so you've just got to keep on working hard, but everything's been running smoothly."
