Redskins assistant set to join UGA staff

Warren Belin's departure for the NFL opened up a spot on Georgia's defensive coaching staff. The Bulldogs are apparently reaching back to the pros to replace him.

Kirk Olivadotti, a longtime assistant with the Washington Redskins, is leaving to join Georgia, according to a source close to the program.

The Washington Post also reported that Olivadotti was headed to Georgia. There was no confirmation yet from UGA.

Olivadotti, who has been the Redskins' longest-tenured assistant, has been coaching the team's linebackers. Belin was Georgia's inside linebackers coach for one year before leaving for the Carolina Panthers.

This was going to be Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham's hire. So considering Grantham's NFL background - 11 years in the league before coming to UGA last year - it's no surprise he would hire someone from the league.

Here's a link to Olividatti's bio.

Wow. I don't want to jump the gun, but that seems to be an extremely good hire.

Its great when we look outside the program and get someone who isn't a hanger on/incestuous hire.

I agree, this guy is a run stopper. Well done Coach Grantham.

I really like this hire. Should be good.

I have a question Seth thats a bit off topic, but it seems relevant in light of the recent events in Auburn. If your having a slow day in the writing world, could you compile a list of the top 10 (or more) of the most horrible events to come from rivalries throughout college football? It would be interesting to see.

Thanks,

I think trusting the hire to Grantham was the right choice. Plus, this guy comes from an NFL pedigree, has one of his own, and has experience coaching special teams.

Seth, the only question I would ask, is what experience does he have coaching any position in a 3-4base alingment?

Seem to remember Albert Haynesthworth of the Skins demanding a trade before switching to a 3-4 after a couple of Pro Bowl years at a traditional 4-3 defensive tackle position.

Wasn't this guy"s stint at LB coach for the Skins before the switch to the 3-4 this past season?

I know that's more than 1 question, but as difficult as it was for the players to pick up the switch to the 3-4 this year, I don't think too many people appreciate that it was also Garner's, Belin's and Lakatos' first year with the scheme also.

I hope he's a good recruiter too.

Good gosh Al Groh was in the NFL and didnt do crap at Virginia. This guy wont be a guarantee on doing anything until he coaches and interacts with college kids.

This hire won't help Mark Richt's downward spiral.

2007, 11 wins
2008, 10 wins
2009, 8 wins
2010, 6 wins

Richt hired 3 coaches last year, and got 2 games worse for the 2nd year in a row.

Hiring a new coach won't help.

We won't know until Kellen Moore walks out of the Georgia Dome whether this was a good hire or not. That said, it's certainly good effort.

Take away Rodney G, and the Defensive side of the ball is as well equipped, and diverse in background as the Offensive side is homogenous and undeserving of their role.

This resume against Bobo's makes our Offensive Coordinator's perch seem laughable. Why can't we upgrade our Offensive staff the same way?

I've got my fingers crossed this is part of a turnaround. I imagine Jones/Samuel/Robinson/Drew/Washington/Gilliard are excited about the new hire.

Given the performance of the Redskins (I live in the DC area), I am not sure this is a good hire.
