Grantham discusses Jenkins and assistant coach search

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, speaking at halftime of Georgia's men's basketball game, was quite happy with the signing of John Jenkins - which wasn't totally unexpected.

"You never really know until it's official," Grantham said. "We knew he liked us a lot. We knew he felt like this was home."

Allowed to comment on Jenkins now, Grantham described the nose tackle as big, physical and athletic, and able to move well for his size. He said Jenkins will make "an immediate impact."

"It'll allow us to move DeAngelo (Tyson) to outside," Grantham said. "It allows us to play with bigger bodies. Because size does matter, and I think he'll help fill a need for us, and I'm looking to having him."

Interestingly, Grantham said Jenkins could play on the other side of the ball. That's partly why they told Jenkins he could wear No. 6.

"There might be a play or two for him," he said with a grin. "If you look back there have been some plays for big guys in the backfield."

The addition of Jenkins could also cause Justin Anderson to move back to offense. Grantham said such a move hasn't been determined yet.

Meanwhile, Grantham now has to go about hiring a new assistant coach after inside linebackers coach Warren Belin left for the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

"Obviously we could go a couple different ways," Grantham said. "But we're basically in a process of looking right now and we're going to hire the best person for Georgia and the best fit for Georgia."

Grantham was asked about the official job posting being for a "defensive ends coach."

"I wouldn't put any stock in that," he said. "We're going to hire the best person for Georgia."

Great job Coach Grantham. Now's the time, this is the year. Let's get this thing done right now.

"Size does matter"...

While I expect a bit of a learning curve at the start of the season on defense, I'm expecting big things once these some of these youngsters get some reps. I've loved what Grantham has had to say, I've loved the fire he's brought. I'm hoping to see our defense to really come together this year. It has the potential to be an exciting year, for sure.

What the f is swagger? Just a stupid made up word.

The best part of this is we upgrade two positions. Tyson will be a huge upgrade over whatever end would have been there.

Also, will Jenkins be a sophomore or junior this fall?

Swagger intransitive verb
1:to walk with an air of overbearing self-confidence

I think Jenkins will be a junior.

Anon 5:39 what is "f", some stupid made up shorthand for.....

Yeah Anon 5:39, consult your dictionary, you stupid-head; we say "WTF" this day and age.

Yeah, anon! You stupidhead.

The tools who say swagger also say "pick six"

God Seth, you are so negative. When all of your readers are UGA fans, at least pretend to not be so homesick. I'm officially done with your blog. With Hale and Ching, it was a masterpiece. You have gotten worse and worse. Hope you get another gig soon. Bye.

Umm, what?

Not sold on Jenkins. To me, he looks slow on tape. He was so much bigger than anyone at JUCO. He won't be that much bigger in D1. He certainly can't be compared to Fairley regarding speed/quickness/athleticism. We'll find out this fall. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not sold on Jenkins? With all the talk and hype by the experts it's pretty amazing that you know better. And even more amazing that you bestow your knowledge of future disappointment on this humble blog. You'd think ESPN would pay you well for that kind of insight. Further, I admire you posting anonymously for fear of hordes of fans finding out who you are and lavishing suffocating praise on you for your talent. You are truly humble. I look forward to new insights that go against everyone else's well paid-for insights.

@Evan

Read my last statement -- "Maybe I'm wrong."

I said nothing to be mean-spirited. Just giving my personal talent evaluation. What a boring blog this would be if everyone agreed.

Are dissenting opinions unwelcome here?

Lemay, Drew, Crowell, Rome, Jenkins. Not all of these guys will live up to the hype. Some may be great, some average, and at least one will be a flop (on the field or off.)

Talent evaluation is not an exact science at any level -- high school, college, or NFL.

We all should know by now -- take every overhyped recruit with a grain of salt.

Nice work tracking down an interview during the BB game Mr. Blog man.

Cmon people...cant we have just ONE day on here where we can all be happy for the Dawgs. The staff did a GREAT job closing on top talent to turn the program around!

I agree Greg. On another note I have been very outspoken with my negative opinion of Bobo as our OC. That being said the guy can flat recruit - he is an asset to UGA if for no other reason than his recruiting.

By the way, the second Evan comment above was not the real Evan. Or possibly coincidence. Though I've never seen another Evan post here ever. Bunch of tech trollers I imagine. I am in fact super pumped about this class and couldn't be more excited for the future!

And sorry Anon, I was just feeling quite sarcastic.
