Fox eyes using Nick Marshall, when football allows
Nick Marshall is coming to Georgia to play football, but men’s basketball head coach Mark Fox is ready to welcome the two-sport athlete to his team too, as long as it can be worked around the football schedule.
Marshall, rated a four-star football prospects by the major recruiting services, signed a letter-of-intent on Wednesday to accept a football scholarship at Georgia. He’s projected to play in the secondary for the Bulldogs, and could see some action on offense as well.
But Marshall is also a pretty good basketball prospect. He averaged 28 points a game last season for Wilcox County High School; Fox called the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Marshall a shooting guard who can also play some point.
“He can really shoot the ball,” Fox said. “He’s got a good IQ for the game. He’s obviously a terrific athlete.”
Fox seems to have discussed Marshall with head coach Mark Richt. On Friday Fox brought up Charlie Ward, who was a two-sport star at Florida State when Richt was an assistant coach in Tallahassee.
When Ward redshirted one year, he played the entire season with the Seminoles basketball team. When Ward was FSU’s quarterback he joined the hoops team after football season.
”We’re gonna have a great football team here, and if Nick can join us in the middle of January and help our team then we’re gonna welcome that,” Fox said. “If he chooses to redshirt one year then we’ll have those conversations with coach Richt and Nick and see what we can work out. But he’s coming to play football first. He’s a great kid and we’re glad he’s coming to Georgia.”
