Jancek Named Defensive Co-Coordinator

From UGA Athletics...

University of Georgia linebacker coach John Jancek has been named co-coordinator for the Bulldog defense according to UGA head coach Mark Richt.

"Willie Martinez is our defensive coordinator and as co-coordinator, John has been and will continue to be instrumental in our game planning on the defensive side of the ball," said Richt.

Jancek is beginning his fifth season with the Bulldogs after joining the staff in 2005. He was recently offered the defensive coordinator position at the University of South Florida but decided to remain with the Bulldogs. A graduate of Grand Valley State University, Jancek held defensive coordinator coaching positions at Wayne State University, Grand Valley, and Central Michigan prior to coming to Georgia.

Interesting move, I wonder how Garner feels about it. I have to believe that despite the title that MR promised the DC job to RG if/when Martinez leaves

This is an interesting move indeed. Not sure what to make of it but I trust Coach Richt's judgement. The guy's not perfect, but if he feels the need to randomly promote one of our assistants, obviously there's a reason for it.

I'm sure a bunch of message board gurus are going to/or already have blown up about this but the truth is, we really have no idea how good a coach Jancek is...Richt certainly knows better than us. I'm sure the argument is our linebackers played poorly this past year, but that tends to happen when you lose 5 guys for the season...in '07 our linebackers played very well.

All of the defensive coaches including Garner are to blame for our bad defense. If the defense does not get significantly better next year, all of them should be fired together. It is a team sport and coaches are supposed to coach as a team. They either swim together or sink together.

I don't think there's any need to start conspiracy theories about this. It was just a reward for his loyalty and an excuse to pay him more. Garner got a raise, too. I highly doubt the responsibilities will change much if at all.
