Previewing the new Sanford Stadium scoreboard

Sanford Stadium will have a new high-definition scoreboard (the kids call it H-D), set to debut for the home opener against South Carolina on September 10. Here are three mock-ups of what it will look like, sent over by UGA's sports information department.

(Click on each photo box and you should be able to pull up a bigger photo of each mock-up).

...

And how in-game replays might look:

I am really upset about this.

I think we should have gone SOTA and put in a 3-D scoreboard, and handed out glasses to everyone.

Mark my words....will be common in CFB in 3-5 years.

So it's not any bigger than the current scoreboard? Unimpressed. Do you know what they're gonna do with the old one? I think the baseball field could use a decent scoreboard.

Why would an in-game replay be from Bobby Dodd? They must be having a dig.

HD replays with multiple slow-motion reviews. Refs are gonna love it!

Whatever refs get paid, it's no longer enough.

You would think they would show a photo from a home game on the mock up!

They need to put another bigger scoreboard on the other end of the stadium. Above the 300 section. I guess its a start though.

This is aimed at Mr. 3D glasses. You really think it's going to be common for fans to constantly take 3D glasses on and off at a sporting event? Also, there's 3D technology now that doesn't require glasses.

I like that UGA finally did the scoreboard right though. We can utilize the whole screen now. I think this is the first scoreboard where UGA did it correctly. All of the other scoreboard "upgrades" were lateral movements. This one truly is an upgrade.

Video looks great. Are they saying anything about audio?

herschel munson said...

okay, question for those of you who think this is at the Joke by Coke.

Why would the Dawgs be wearing home uniforms (red)?

Reverend Whitewall said...

herschel munson.........more often than not, Tech wears their away (white) jerseys at home instead of their dark jerseys. It's the home team's choice of which jerseys they wear, and Tech is one of the few schools that often times wears their white shirts at home. We've worn our red shirts at Bobby Dodd lots of times.

A potential Tech recruit once asked "why are there so many empty seats at your home games?" To which the Tech coach replied, "No son, those aren't home games you're seeing on TV; when we're in white, we're on the road."

What Regular Guy said. Plus, if nothing else, please note the white wall at the base of the stands in the background and the notable absence of -- um, er, ah -- HEDGES.

its definitely at bobby dodd - look at the background.

that's the cement wall in the endzone at bobby dodd.

stupid advertising department at uga.

Also I doubt our contract lets us advertise for Russell Athletic on the stadium walls.

Waah, waah, it sucks, the mockup sucks, we should have another one, they used a picture from Bobby Dodd, it should've been in 3D, herpa derpa doo.

Fire Fox! Richt! Bobo! Perno! Burn the whole place down!

Scoreboard will read at the end of it's debut:

South Carolina 28
Georgia 3

@Alan...the dimensions might not be bigger, but it seems as if the entire screen can be used for replays rather than just the video box in the middle. The whole thing will have the same dimensions but with much more real estate to work with.

And if they can do that, why not a little picture-in-picture for some of the boring noon Directional State games?

Anonymous said...

The scoreboard will be able to read?!?! Mark my words, the machines will rise against us in 3-5 years...

Anonymous said...

The question is...will they actually start showing replays of controversial plays? Or will they continue to protect the refs and not show them?

Anonymous said...

Oh, that is nice... I like it. See some people complaining that it isn't bigger.... it IS bigger, the screen gives them the ability to use the whole face for videos, like the one at Turner Field. Plus it's HD, so the quality will likely be infinitely better.

Now if they could get some camera operators that were worth two cents to work the games we could actually enjoy the new board. The shots the current ones take are ALWAYS TOO TIGHT! You can never see the play developing. This is especially annoying when your seats are on the 10 and the teams are on the opposite 10. I know Aaron Murray is a good looking kid but gametime isn't the time for Glamour Shots!

Prepare yourselves, folks. I used to be a season ticket holder at Texas, which to my knowledge still claims the largest HD scoreboard in college football.

You get about four full screen replays per game, and the rest of the time you are looking at ads.

Gotta pay for that thing somehow, I guess.

The advertisers are saying that Georgia IS at home in bobby dodd.

Andy said...

Anonymous 2:43 wins, best explanation ever.

TOO BAD THOSE STATS Wont Pan Out for CMR and BOO BOO.

Cant wait to see those stupid "GET Crunked" videos on the new scoreboard. What a complete waste.

Anonymous said...

Cant wait to see Mike Woods sweaty bald head in H D with the UGA emblem. IM Georgia waving my towel and my team lost to Mickey Mouse U 10 - 6 in a bowl game.

Anonymous said...

Did Georgia score on South Carolina last year? Might not need a scoreboard for that game.

Anonymous said...

Waah, we lost to Central Florida, waah, we lost to South Carolina.

And by "we," I mean "Georgia, that team that always beats my team like a drum." Eh, Tech Troll?

Clown.

SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH SETH,

Sorry, I had to get your attention somehow with all of these comments here. Have you heard anything about G-Day this year possibly being on ESPN (or at least ESPN3)? If you haven't heard anything, would you mind asking Claude or anyone else in-the-know next time you go to practice? Thanks.

As a graphic artist and advertising guy, this looks like total crap. I would hope that it was designed by an intern, as it is something that any competent designer could throw together in 15 minutes... blindfolded... and drunk.
