Mark Fox on the timeout, and where it leaves the NCAA hopes

Some quick quotes from the Georgia locker room and postgame press conference:

- Bulldogs head coach Mark Fox said he didn’t call the timeout after the Alabama basket because he didn’t want to go the length of the court after the defense had a chance to set.

“We didn’t want to have to go the length of the floor because of their pressure,” he said. “I thought we would have a little more time than 0.8. I thought we would get the timeout with a couple seconds.”

Fox said he thinks he hollered for the timeout with about two seconds left, but granted that the refs went to the monitor.

“The ball went in, so sure I wish I hadn’t called it,” Fox said. “That’s a tough, tough break.”

- As for the NCAA tournament hopes, Fox used the painful end of regulation as evidence that his team should still be in.

“If I don’t call that timeout, and the ball goes in, you don’t ask that question,” Fox said. “That’s how close it is. But this team, I think, has put itself in position to get serious consideration.”

- Some people think Alabama may have punched its ticket by beating Georgia a second time. Fox had a quick comeback when asked if the Tide’s two wins over the Bulldogs should be a factor between the two teams’ bids:

“If it does, then Georgia-Colorado will factor in. I think they look at the body of work really more than they do anything else,” Fox said.

- Dustin Ware on his reaction to his would-be game-winner not counting:

“I thought it was a clean shot. But then I kind of saw the referee waving it off, so I knew coach had called a timeout.”

I'll have more in my stories later.

Yep, both of the Marks in Athens are choke artists. All of our major sports suck. McGarity is gonna be busy the next couple of years.

Could have had Anthony Grant...

Dawgs need to learn how to win period in all the big three sports Football,Basketball and Baseball. Who really cares about tennis, pasture pool ,swimming and equestrian. Someone needs to tell McGarity we aint in the hunt !

Nice game last night, Tech fan.

(Just so you know: When you put your exclamation marks a space after the sentence each time, it's easy to know it's you. Sorry.)

I aint no Tech Fan Mr. kool aid drinker. Im sick and tired of UGA losing because of incompetent coaching.

Well my Dawgs stunk it up once again. I guess we are fore sure in the NIT.

Same ole same ole. Mark Fox is not the coach to get it done at UGA as we are now finding out. He is a systems coach but not much on strategy. We need to look elsewhere Im afraid.

Dawgs blew it as usual. Im tired of this happening over and over. I guess its time for the apologist to come out of the woodwork with their feel good excuses.

That was a tough loss.

I have been amazed all year at the lack of heart and leadership with a team that starts 4 juniors and a senior. I know we only have a 6 man rotation, but wow. Just wow.

Also, does anyone else want to just choke Gerald Robinson about every time he gets the ball? He has over 100 turnovers this year. Brutal.

Does anyone remember where this BBall team was this time last year? Coach Fox made a bad decision that im sure he would take back. Cut the man some slack. Oh, and I would take Richt and Fox over Johnson and Hewitt anyday.....

That was a tough loss, and yes, coach fox made a bad decision right at the end of regulation, but anybody that doesn't see all of the progress that has been made this year needs to get their head out of their ass. This program has come a long way, we just don't have a lot of depth and we wear down quickly. We are a good team and coach fox has done a fine job this year.

Say what you will about Bobby Knight, but his teams did not blow big leads as often as our team does. For whatever reason, all of our sports teams have gotten a mental block as to how to close out games, and I can only assume that mental block starts with the leadership at the top. Nuff said.

Tough loss today, but huge improvement over last year. Just know it could have been so much better, but at least we're not tech fans!
Still should make it in when all's said and done. Lets learn and improve from here.
Oh, and nice game last night, Tech fan.

I love the guys that talk about how far program has come and the same dumb guy keeps saying we have no depth. It's college basketball almost everyone has no depth, Alabama has no depth. You think are depth gets better next year we lose Price, thompkins, and Leslie. You will be whining about depth next year and the next. Just an excuse. If this team does not make tourny then it has been a bad year. You think losing big three this team going be any good next year? No one has depth it is college basketball!!!

I wonder if some of you fans are real people!!

Seriously some of these opinions are seriously retarded!!!!

This is UGA basketball!! Who do you guys think we are?

We are not some great basketball program. Is this the first season you have paid any attention to UGA basketball?

Sure I would of liked to of seen us win too but this has been one of the better seasons in recent memory at UGA!

It's called progress!

Fans of all sports these days just seem to be living in the moment and only that moment and don't know the history.

I have to say I used to post here a good bit until I realized the fans who post in this comment section are some of the stupidest most unrealistic fans that UGA have. Also completely negative!

I got an account over at scout and post on there message boards and enjoy the opinions of the UGA fans there so much more! Very intelligent fans.

This is a very good blog for news but the fans who comment here are similar to the ones that comment on ajc UGA articles.

Chris,
Unfortunately the team's major players are going to be gone next year. The underachievment is what everyone is complaining about. Too much talent to be blowing double digit leads constantly. No progress during the year is also disgusting. Improve from last year, yes, but forget about next year.

Great comment aladawg

Yes there has been progress from last year to this year. There has been no progress during this season though we are no better than in December. That is what is frustrating.

ChrisDawg... go on over to those namby pamby blogs. I promise this is one critical dawg fan that wont miss you. Im tired of the excuses year after year no depth, youth , injuries and so on and so on. Clemson has a new coach in his first year and looks to make it to the Big Dance. Why cant UGA? Mark Fox should have had this team playing better period.

Mark Fox needs to be coaching at Furman. He wont win anything at UGA.

Seth, most everyone is talking about the final TO, but I'd like to hear Coach Fox's reason for not taking the TO on the previous trip. Robinson(?) was trapped and threw up a desperation shot as the clock wound down. Coach Fox didn't take a TO then as the play happened in front of him, but did the next possession. Not second guessing, just thought it was an interesting strategic decision. Coach Fox is a good coach and I hope he stays at UGA a long time.

Has UGA struggled down the stretch of several games this year, yes. Is UGA a much better team under Fox than they have been in many years, for sure. The team has improved greatly under his watch and I expect they will continue to do so. The Dawgs don't have a single loss to a team outside the RPI top 85 (Bama is around 85) and outside of Bama haven't lost to a team outside of the top 40. Not bad for year two. He has recruited quite well to a program that has shown nothing in the last few years and now either has UGA in the tourny or right on the verge which will only make recruiting that much easier for him.

I don't care if we lose alot of games I want to have a coach where I can see the players getting better. Leslie is slightly better than last year still no outside shot. Thompkins is no better than he was last year. Gerald Robinson has gotten worse as season goes on. Dustin Ware has developed decent outside shot. None of our bench players including our freshman seem to be much better than beginning of season. Just show improvement all I am asking for.

Mark Fox = Mark Richt. Both are good people and both are lousy big gameday coaches. Just saying....

Is it safe to say that less than 10% of the posters on this string are actual dawg fans who actually donate hard earned money to the athletic association? If so, their opinions mean nothing to me, as they are not true shareholders in UGA athletics. Want new coaches? Pony up and help pay for them. I, personally, like our coaches... And my opinion means more than yours because I put my money where my mouth is. Thanks. JG.

I don't ordinarily comment on basketball threads because I never played the game and don't know much about it.

But you 'fans'? Give me a break. I figure you have to be fairly young, because the one attribute I see in all of you is a false sense of entitlement and misplaced arrogance. You seem to think that you are more knowledgeable than professionals who have been doing this all their lives. You think that by watching 40 minutes of basketball or 60 minutes of football, you know everything that is going on with the teams and exactly how to fix it. You know nothing of history, and understand very little about statistics.

You seem to think you are entitled to a championship team, regardless of the circumstances.

Here's a news flash: you are entitled to cheer for your team or not. That's it. Feel free to express your opinion, but understand that without logically and factually supporting it, you just look like a spoiled little child, and no-one who has a brain in their heads will have any respect for you. In fact, you end up looking like Al from Dadeville... and intelligent and rational fans absolutely hate it because we end up be associated with you simply by the colors we all wear.

I personally take comfort that, if you have such arrogance and entitlement issues, it's only a matter of time before life kicks you squarely in the nuts.

I believe fox has done a good job turning things around so far and look forward to future. That being said this team is brutal to watch they tear your heart out blowing these big leads. Any rational person knows basketball program getting better, but if you are a rational person this has been disappointing at times too!
