While most of the attention has been on the Georgia men's basketball team enjoying a solid season, the women aren't doing too shabby themselves.
The Lady Bulldogs (20-9 overall, 10-6 in the SEC) have a bye into the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament, which starts Thursday in Nashville. Head coach Andy Landers' team is the No. 4 seed and will play Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the first-round game between No. 5 South Carolina and No. 12 Ole Miss.
In addition, Georgia senior Porsha Phillips was named a first-team all-SEC pick on Tuesday in a vote of the league coaches. Phillips (11.1 ppg, 10.7 rpg) is on pace to average a double-double, and would be the first Bulldog to do so in a quarter-century, according to UGA.
Sophomore Jasmine James, who is leading Georgia with 12.1 points per game, was also made a second-team all-SEC pick by the coaches.
And because no basketball blog post would be complete without the initials RPI: The Georgia women rank 34th in the RPI, according to this site. Under Landers, Georgia has been to 27 of the past 29 NCAA tournaments.

A nice as all this is, I still consider this a significant underperformance as compared to the program and what we expect from it. If Georgia played in just about any other conference (that didn't have Tennessee in it), the reputation, already excellent, as one of the premier women's programs in the nation would be through the roof.
So that just means that UT will drill them in the next round of the SEC Tourney. Good times.
Landers has done an excellent job over the years, but his teams always start fast and end miserably. It seems he has burn out about 25 games into every season, with a then short appearance in the tournament. He needs to change his style as the season wears on, because what he's doing isn't working late in the season.
