Wednesday Links (6/30)

A few bits of housekeeping right off the bat...

-- First off, I apologize for a rather lackluster effort on posts this week. In my defense, there's no way I could possibly have more on my plate right now than I'm currently accomplishing without my head exploding. But if it makes you feel better, I've tried to work ahead a bit so there will be a handful of posts going up while I'm away the next couple weeks.

-- Next up: This is probably completely unprofessional, but hey... I'm leaving, so who cares, right? Anyway, I've got a lease in Athens that I can't get out of. I need a subletter. Anyone know someone looking for a nice two bedroom house in Five Points? First round of beers is on me for whoever takes the place. Here's the Craigslist ad for more info.

-- My Pauley's beer card will be finished this weekend. Any suggestions for a proper signature phrase to go on my photo for the Pauley's wall? (And before you ask, yes, I've probably taken my commitment to my beer card much more seriously than my impending marriage for the past month. In my defense, my fiance is only about seven beers behind me.)

-- I know the BCS is never going to be a fan favorite, and I'm not suggesting there might not be a better alternative, but... when South Carolina wins the College World Series after dropping two of three to Kentucky and East Carolina during the regular season then scored a total of one run in the SEC tournament, how can you make the argument that a playoff ensures a more deserving national champion? In fact, let me rephrase that: If South Carolina wins anything, how can you call it a legitimate national title? (Note: That little jab at the Gamecocks will earn me some disgusting shots this weekend from my buddy who is a SC grad.)

OK, some links...

-- In case you missed it, I had a story in Monday's Macon Telegraph on Mark Richt's optimism for the 2010 season.

-- The Georgia Bullblawg has a follow up to Richt's rah-rah approach this offseason.

-- Well, this could certainly have something to do with why Travis Jones didn't become a coach at Georgia this offseason. Bullet dodged.

-- Ben Dukes has a good take on all the worry surrounding Aaron Murray this season.

-- Tim Tucker puts the Orlando Sentinel's No. 64 preseason ranking for UGA into context.

-- The AJC's Michael Carvell has a piece on the developing relationship between former Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford and former Tech receiver Calvin Johnson, now the key members of the Detroit Lions' offense.

-- And the brilliant career of Quincy Carter takes another step toward the Hall of Fame.

-- I tried very, very hard to get all the new uniform numbers of Georgia's freshmen. I failed. But Silver Britches picked up my slack.

-- News flash! ... Florida is officially worried about the upstart Georgia Bulldogs. OK, not on the football field, but take these moments of encouragement wherever you can get them.

-- This is extremely sad news. The daughter of former UGA coach Joe Kines was killed in a car accident on Monday.

-- Facebook strikes again! Ole Miss may be in line for a secondary recruiting violation after posting on a recruit's Facebook page.

-- In case you missed it, former Georgia tennis star John Isner provided the top 10 list on "The Late Show" on Tuesday. I thought he was funny, but how do you think he stacked up to the job done by Matthew Stafford last year?

-- So you remember my post over the weekend talking about my reporting jinx? Well, add this to the overwhelming evidence supporting the theory.

-- The Chicago Tribune has an excellent retrospective on "The Blues Brothers" 30 years after its release. And 10 years after the release of "Blues Brothers 2000," we're all still trying to pretend it never happened.

-- Alan Sepinwall offers some suggestions on who could replace Steve Carell on "The Office."

-- Salon offers a rare defense of "Entourage." I still haven't watched the premier and, given how much I've got going on, I'm not sure I'm going to be in a hurry to catch up.

-- "Friday Night Lights" is doing well in the ratings. Probably too little, too late for them to add future seasons though.

-- And finally, since I'm leaving, I should probably squeeze in "Lost" links whenever I can. Starz puts together a pretty funny bit detailing how the show should have ended.

I do think Finebaum is right that Steve Carrell is on the hot seat. However, most of the named replacements would be all wrong for the program.

Right now, Colbert is like Chris Peterson. He is successful exactly right where he is. He destroys the competition on his level and occasionally beats the big boys in head to head matchups.

Jeong is Kirby Smart. Good - maybe even great - but he needs more experience.

Jermaine Clement is Paul Wulff. He has had some success at one program of which only an enlightened few are aware. He will be/is a disaster at higher level.

Samberg is Kiffin. Young, weird, will spurn you for something else as soon as his dream job comes along. Every Office episode would be an homage to his SNL digital shorts.

Lehr is Bill Stewart. A guy who parlayed his limited run into a full time gig only you are not really certain if he is good or bad.

Burrell is Butch Jones. He is new star for an up and coming program but probably not seasoned enough to carry an established heavyweight.

Will Arnett is Mike Leach. He is a genius but in that eccentric smarmy way. He could lead you to a brief period of greatness and then it will devolve into a mess of weird allegations and name calling. Plus you could see him banishing lazy writers to a dark shed.

Warbuton is Bob Davie. A good to great supporting player, but just mediocre as the head man.

Offerman is Muschamp. He can/will be the man right where he his and not miss a beat. Why take over a ship that might be sinking.

Thomas Lennon is Gary Patterson. He is really good but not high profile. He likes his gig, has his own way of doing things and appears to be completely happy with where is at and the respect he receives.

Chevy Chase would be a Spurrier like choice. He would not be bad but he will never again achieve the spectacular heights of his earlier career.

Ricky Gervais is the hardest one to peg. He is successful figure who made his mark at this level awhile back, it did not translate to the next leve, and he now sort of toils in semi-obscurity. I am thinking Dennis Erickson. He could be great but also the role may have passed him by.

Finebaum thinks what they really need to find is that John Gruden. A guy who has been successful at the ultimate level winning it all but then it went bad. Now he might be willing to take a step back but get back to winning again. Plus he will think it is fun and get really enthusiastic about it because it will remind him of those halcyon days of when he worked as a supporting player as an up and comer. Sure he might leave you for the next level after 1-3 years of greatness but it will be worth it. The real question is who is Gruden? Is it Forest Whitaker (although he has his own drama series on CBS), Jamie Foxx or Kevin Spacey?

FYI, watch Louie on FX. Louis C.K. is way better than anything in Entourage. That show has been stale for years at this point.

Thanks for cursing the Phillies so soon! Keep up the good work. They won't know what hit them.

Also, would you like me to come by your new blog and type inane 1,000 word comments about how the Phillies recent World Series titles mean nothing and that all the current players are in decline, despite stats that might prove otherwise?
Anything to make you feel more at home...

Some of the funniest phrases on the wall at Pauly's involve couples or two people. Since the ball and chain is so close to completion, you should finish at the same time and have your pictures placed side by side. Then have a comment that plays off the other. As for the comment... there are people far more creative than I to offer formidable suggestions.

My girlfriend decided earlier this month that we should both finish up the beer card after the wedding reception so she can get her picture taken in her wedding gown. She's a classy lady.

A day late, your comment about it finally is that South Carolina does not deserve to win the National Championship.

They lost the 1st game of the College World Series and won every other game. Presumably the team you thought should have won the College World Series in some 2-team play-off, therefore, LOST to South Carolina.

But, you didn't bother to share who you think that should have been with just a 2-team play-off David Hale.

When you click your URL Link on your come-on comment about Florida being worried about The Georgia Bulldogs now that you are leaving, what you find is a St. John's fan Kevin Brockway who doesn't even mention Gerald Robinson Jr. who will play the Point and is a huge scoring threat.

Which is about as amazing as you as a Phillie's Phan writing that South Carolina is a not a good baseball team, beating ALL the best teams in America.

I do not see 1 single baseball team from up North, David Hale. Of the 8 teams in the 8-team Play-Offs known as the College World Series, the farthest North team even in the hunt for the NC, is Oklahoma.

Baseball is a game where you play South Carolina played 70 games, and you say South Carolina is not deserving because they lost you say 2 series out of 70 games they played.

No team in America BEAT as many games as South Carolina did, and they also beat all the good teams. All. 54 wins you discount because of 2 series' losses.

Ray Tanner is a great baseball Coach, and South Carolina has been to 9 CWS, only the previous 3 of which before this National Championship were for The SEC.

They won 6 Straight Consecutive Games against the best baseball teams in America, all from Universities in the Southern Part of the U.S.

No baseball team ever has done that. It is history.

South Carolina went 11-1 in the Baseball NCAA Tournament, you say you are so against, David Hale.

1st National Championship in Men's Athletics at South Carolina and you say, David Hale, they do not deserve it because they lost the series to Kentucky and to East Carolina.

Jackie Bradley, Jr could be playing for the Philthadelphia Phillies, and he won the CWS MVP.

The Sophomore Centerfielder started this season with a broken hand, missing 6 weeks - but, he is a 5-skill player with a cannon for an arm and a relaxed batting style which is legendary.

They lost by the way 1 game to 2-1 to Kentucky and lost 2 games 4-2 and 4-3 to East Carolina without Jackie Bradley, Jr.

Bradley batted .368 with 40 walks and a .993 fielding percentage with an on base percentage of .473 and slugging percentage of .587 and only 1 of those 4 games you want to talk about did Jackie Bradley, Jr. start. 1 other he got only 1 at bat and got a hit.

East Carolina was 32-27 on the season.

Kentucky was 31-25 ranked the # 32 team in the United States of America.
