Gray Discusses Future With Richt

An already shallow depth chart at quarterback for Georgia could take another major hit as the Bulldogs anxiously await a decision on the future of junior Logan Gray.

After being named the No. 2 quarterback behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray last week, Gray is considering a transfer, according to the school.

Gray met with head coach Mark Richt on Monday morning to discuss his future, and according to the Georgia sports information department, the quarterback is weighing his options on whether to remain in Athens or finish his career elsewhere.

Should Gray decide to transfer, Georgia would be left with just two quarterbacks on scholarship – Murray and freshman Hutson Mason, who will not arrive on campus for another month.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Mettenberger was dismissed from the program earlier this month after an alcohol-related arrest in March.

Gray served as the team’s No. 2 quarterback last season but saw minimal playing time despite the struggles of starter Joe Cox. Gray threw just 12 passes last season, completing five and throwing two interceptions. He also operated occasionally in the Wildcat formation, running nine times for 35 yards.

The lack of playing time last season caused Gray to request a position change in January. Coaches toyed with the idea of moving him to receiver, but he was convinced to remain at quarterback through the spring in what was called an open competition for the starting job.

With Mettenberger’s dismissal, however, a position change would be difficult for Gray, but his chances of unseating Murray also appeared slim.

Gray completed 10-of-17 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in Georgia’s spring game, and afterward he said he remained encouraged about his chances, regardless of where he might end up on the depth chart.

“It matters some, but ultimately everybody’s going to have to compete again during fall camp, go out and take reps and make plays and run the offense again,” Gray said. “So even though they may list the quarterbacks, it’ll be good to see where they’re judging us from a spring standpoint, but it can also be motivation to work even harder for fall.”

When Georgia’s depth chart was released last week, Richt said he was encouraged by Gray’s progress, but he didn’t rule out a change of position for the junior either.

"I want him to be in the best position to help Georgia win, and whether that’s No. 2 quarterback or getting some reps at receiver or something, that remains to be seen," Richt said last week. "But we just want to get him in the best position to help Georgia."

Say Logan decides to leave, that leaves UGA with Murray and Mason? Is there a Joe T. v2.0 on the team that gets absolutely no press coverage?

Andy said...

This would be pretty devastating. Logan is a nice safety blanket should Murray struggle or get injured. Huston will be a fine quarterback, but he will in no way be ready to play this fall. It is hard to compete for championships when you only have two quarterbacks, and neither has ever taken a snap.

Yikes. That would be a quick drop from 3 to 1. Can Branden Smith throw?? :)

And continuing in the ever-ironic captcha saga, my word verification is worizes...

Maybe this is all a publicity stunt to get Christian LeMay to commit...

Kathleen said...

At least we are definitely Fulmer Cup champs this year!

=/

Maybe when we say "Go Dawgs!" we should be more specific...

Andy said...

Alan- Can we get Christian Lemay to get his GED and enroll a year early?

CRUMBUM said...

Yeah, it would be a real shame to lose a guy lose a guy with the Fair Catch skills of Logan Grey.

I agree with Andy. Worse yet is the fact that Murray had shoulder issues last year and the year before that he broke his leg. You can say they were two freak injuries and it means nothing, but two years in a row has the making of a trend. If Murray is truly injury prone UGA may only have one healthy quarterback at some point this season...and he isn't even on campus yet.

More bad news. Another guy gets arrested:

Missed your tweet about the arrest... my bad

Every D-coordiantor in the SEC that will play UGA, will be telling their defense, "Hit Aaron Murray on EVERY play."

Award me a schloarship, I will glady hold a clip board for the university of Georgia

Run the ball, run it some more and run it some more. Then when that is done play action throw deep to Green and then run it some more.

Why is the sky falling in Georgia?

The Hawks cannot win a road playoff game. The Braves lost their 6th straight after having the lead for most of the game. Yet another UGA player gets arrested on alcohol charges which continues to make the program look like a joke. And now we may only be left with 2 green QBs to carry us through what is looking more and more like it will be a no-bowl-game season.

Please someone give me some good, non-smartass news.

Honestly, if it had come down to Gray having to play because Murray was hurt... we were screwed anyway, because Gray wasn't going to win us any ball games. So if Murray gets hurt and Mason has to play, we're still screwed... just with a guy who probably has a better arm but lacks the awesome fair catch skills.

Also, I can't believe that Gray didn't see this coming. When the coaches approach you about switching to wide receiver... I would think that would tip you off that you probably aren't going to be lining up under center during a game. Can't blame him for leaving to find playing time, but I wish he would have done it earlier, perhaps not leaving us in such a bind.

Anon 11:23, How can you say this is a no-bowl-game season? I feel like that's a bit of a panicky reaction.

The arrests and dismissals are embarrassing yes, but only half have affected players who would have actually seen the field (Mett and Robinson). The others were walk-ons or back ups, and while the university takes an image hit with their problems, its certainly not like the world is ending.

Even if Logan leaves and we're really thin at QB it's not like the rest of the offense is inexperienced. We have other offensive Playmakers (Green, Ealey, King, and Charles-just to name a few). And yes the defense will be adjusting to a new scheme and we'll have some growing pains this season, but you really have to bet against CMR to think we're going to lose 7 games in a schedule that includes ULafayette, Miss State, Colorado, a severely depleted UT, Vandy, and Idaho State-not to mention SC, Arky, and Kentucky who we should beat. Our toughest games will be Aurburn and Florida (as always) and maybe GT (depending on how well they recover from losing their personnel losses). This year is without a doubt easier than last year schedule wise, and we can really only improve in things like turnovers, kick off coverage, and scoring defense. I'm not saying this year we're destined for Atlanta or anything, but if we don't make a bowl something is terribly wrong.

Andy said...

Anon 11:23- UGA still has 10 returning starters on offense, and a defense that is bound to be better than the atrocious unit we had last year. Not to mention we have a significantly easier schedule this year, and every team in the SEC east has their own big (most bigger) issues than UGA. If we won 8 games with last year's team, this team should at the VERY least do the same. While it is WAY too early to make bowl predictions, I would it is very unlikely we don't make a bowl next season.

If he leaves, its a punk move. No loyalty to his teammates whatsoever. Good riddance.

Also, I hope the walk-on that got popped is removed from the team immediately. To get in trouble right now, with all that's going on, is asinine.

kathleen, Fulmer Cup leaders? what have you been smoking? As for Anon 11:23, is this your first experience with CFB? Damn man.

This seems to be an emotional reaction from LG. I think he will think about this and realize his earlier comments about there being a long way to go are pretty much right on. Transfer and sit a year to play one versus being one play away behind a QB that has been injured his last two season? Easy decision if he thinks it through. Plus, there is no guarantee that Am will succeed at this level, even if healthy. He has never taken a snap at this level. If LG has the potential he thinks he has, he is better off coming back in August and winning the job.

Dawgfan17 said...

Richt needs to assign the best behaved seniors to follow Murray around all off season and make sure he does not get in any trouble. As for LG if he decides to leave it does suck for the team but you can't blame a guy for wanting to get playing time in college. To say he should just accept that he will never get to play a game he has worked at and loved his whole life is selfish of us as fans. I hope he decides to come back and hope that he gets lots of mop up duty for us but to be mad at him for considering a transfer is seems petty to me.

David- is there any players at other positions that played a little qb in high school that could be an emergency qb like what Hines Ward did for us back in his day?

Dawgfan17,

Rambo played some QB - you may recall CMR singing his praises running the scout team a few years back emulating Tebow.

Kathleen said...

We're on the board for the Fulmer Cup already (6th place) and those were the April 20th standings, before the last TWO arrests were made public: punter and walkon lineman.

UL Lafayette is ahead of us, though, so that might make an interesting opener.

David Hale said...

Sorry I'm a bit late on this... yes, Rambo was the team's "emergency" QB. I think it'd be an interesting short-term wrinkle to the offense, too. But he couldn't be BOTH the starting QB and starting safety, and moreover, it'd be a short-term solution at best. He doesn't have a better arm than Logan and he doesn't know the position well enough so it'd be strictly an emergency situation. Nick Williams also played QB in college, and if I remember correctly, Caleb has thrown a halfback pass or two in his day. But all of those are situations Georgia doesn't want to find itself in.

Joe Cox didnt turn out to be a Shockley but he did carry something that we want all UGA players to have and that is loyalty. While he doesnt carry any records except for most TD passes in a game (Im thinking about the ARK game 2009)he was fiercely loyal to UGA and its fans. Joe C, Joe T, Shockley and others are part of that rich tradition of loyalty. If you dont want to be at UGA. Bye!

Kathleen said...

I can't blame any kid for a lack of loyalty to a team.. not when coaches can transfer at will and kids need to think about their careers as individuals. If a kid really thinks it's in his best interest to change teams, I'm not going to blame him for it when coaches change teams to serve their careers it all the time...

And it's not like fans are loyal to kids who will work hard - they'll be the first to want to see them benched if someone else does it better, and they'll boo and badmouth KIDS who don't play that well. So if fans and coaches can be selfish, if we as adults have chucked loyalty out the window, how do we expect the players NOT to be?

coaches, and richt more specifically, need to get control of this program. finishing 2nd in the SEC east each year isn't good enough to have the off the field problems they are having. Win 10 national championships in 20 years like the canes and we can maybe swing that, but not with the current output.

I sorry but simple alcohol arrest in a college college town where alcohol is the favorite pastitme after attending football games is not embarassing. Felony arrest are embarassing.

Anonymous said...

Kathleen I absolutely agree with you. Further I will state UGA fans are the worst at bad mouthing players. I will add that Aaron's older brother will make sure that he stays in line.

Anonymous said...

I am amused that people actually think that UGA football players are any worse than they ever were. I went to UGA when Lindesy Scott was a mental health mess getting into plenty of trouble and Guy McIntyre was a major cokehead. But most people did not know about about it because it wasn't reported and there was no internet.

Kathleen, none of Logan's coaches have gone anywhere so that is not a valid comparison. I understand what you're saying, but nothing like that has occurred with our team so it doesn't matter. Not to mention the fact that two wrongs have never made anything right. Its a punk move if he leaves. It's quitting, plain and simple.
