No Bowl Game for Dismissed Coaches
From UGA release...
Three University of Georgia assistant football coaches whose contracts will not be renewed have declined the opportunity to coach in the Bulldogs' bowl game.
Defensive coordinator and secondary coach Willie Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris, and defensive co-coordinator and linebackers coach John Jancek were offered the opportunity to coach through the bowl game but have declined according to head coach Mark Richt.
"Despite the situation, Willie, John, and Jon are all outstanding men and outstanding coaches," said Richt. "They have all accomplished some great things during their tenures at Georgia. Willie and Jon (Fabris) were part of all three of our SEC Eastern division titles and two SEC championships. John (Jancek) was part of our 2005 SEC title. I cannot wish them anything but the very best."
Richt said that he will work along with defensive line coach Rodney Garner, and graduate assistants Todd Hartley and Mitch Doolittle in preparing the defense for the bowl game.

Well, I guess I could see this working out this way. This is Rodney's 1 game extension to prove himself. Good showing by the D allows him to keep his job. Bad showing, and the Dawgs go looking for 4 new coaching. If thats the case, here is hoping for 3 D coaches and a dedicated Special teams coach. No more pulling the kicker in 2 directions between directional and deep kicks please.
This is consistent with their performance over the last few years.
I understand that their contracts will not be renewed, but are they not under contract for the 2009 season. How is it an option?
Is Coach Garner going to call the plays? And what are the chances of new defensive coaches being hired prior to the bowl game?
@Bill I'm pretty sure their contracts have been terminated and not just that they won't be re-signed.
Your crazy if you think they will fire garner. I know of a couple of coaches who said he was tough to recruit against but those guys also said he was dirty
In some ways this news surprised me. But for the most part it doesn't. If I were in their shoes I don't think my heart OR my focus would be there. At the same time, they probably felt it'd be very uncomfortable working with the team in practice under these conditions.
As for the play calling, etc, the same plays will be called. No defensive genius is on the UGA staff so no new scheme is going to be hatched for them to crash-learn in just a few wks.
I hope the dawgs are able to move forward fairly quickly with their hiring of the coaches. I think it's important for both recruiting AND beating out our rivals who may be going after the same coaches we may be going after (whomever that may be).
Well we are going to be in a tough position for the bowl game. I guess we will run a pure vanilla Cover 2, oh wait that's what we have done for years, never mind.
I bet we give up less than the 26 point average Willie left us with.
This is not a surprise...it appears the loyalty runs one-way!
The 2010 contracts were not renewed...however, these clowns are under contract through December 31, 2009. Hopefully their pay is docked accordingly.
Kudos to Anon 839....we'll give up less that 26!
I've got $500 that says none of these three land D-1 jobs in 2010. Any takers?
Coach Garner isn't going anywhere ... He has way to much value as a rectuiter
These coaches need to focus time on finding a new job, that's why they won't be coaching in the bowl game. Can't blame them really.
Seriously, I can't see how anyone can fault them. And if I thought I could collect, I would take the bet.
During these economic times I hope people can just thank them for their contributions (which are significant) and wish them the best. 3 weeks of pay is not a big deal in the big picture and shows some humanity. I don't know if you really want them coaching anyways. We need a fresh start and I think let them spend the time with their families and looking for their next paycheck so they can support them.
I don't think this is surprising at all. I think CMR offered this as a courtesy. Regardless of what happens in the bowl it's a break and a chance to move on. It'll give CMR more hands on coaching and may really help him determine how he wants to proceed.
We need Florida to win so that we can get Kirby from Alabama. If Bama wins the national championship, I doubt we could get him as a DC, because he'll be looking for a HC job.
