Wednesday Links (11/11)

No idle banter today. Straight to the links...

-- I have a story in today's Telegraph on the importance of a victory in the one rivalry Georgia still controls.

-- Battle Hymn Notes has a good post today saying that Georgia's season can still be defined by how it does in its final two rivalry games.

-- Marc Weiszer writes that Mark Richt has officially endorsed a name for the Branden Smith package in the playbook.

-- Bernie is ready with his always awesome locker notes for the week, this time calling on Uga VII to up his game. (Oh, and Bernie, you may be disappointed to learn, Rennie & Ben Tate were workout partners over the summer.)

-- Georgia's defense will be severely tested this week, and Mario Fannin is a big reason why.

-- Macon Dawg gives you plenty of other reasons Georgia's defense might be in for a long night in Athens on Saturday. Could we see a repeat of the 2005 game?

-- Among many other bits of news and notes, Andy Bitter talks up Darvin Adams, who appears most likely burn a member of Georgia's secondary this week.

-- The Anti-Orange Page offers its official endorsement for all Auburn graduates.

-- I mentioned the show yesterday, but didn't know that you could catch Bubba 'N Earl on Versus' "Masters of the Tailgate." Be sure to check 'em out.

-- Haven't had enough rumor mongering yet this year? Don't worry, there's always Bleacher Report. And as for my two cents, I haven't heard a single word to substantiate any of the "rumors" mentioned in this article.

-- And since Bleacher Report is speculating, I might as well pass along Dawg Bark's wishlist for coaching changes. I'm not sure why there is so much animosity directed at John Jancek. For one, he's an excellent recruiter. Secondly, between Marcus Dowtin, Christian Robinson and Nick Williams, haven't the linebackers developed more young players this year than any other position?

-- Lane Kiffin scored a major recruiting victory in the state of Georgia, landing a top offensive lineman.

-- The New York Times has a fantastic article on former Bulldog Hines Ward, who is working with biracial children to help them break through many of the same barriers he faced growing up.

-- From the Rumble Seat tries to find some silver linings on Georgia Tech's woeful defense.

-- Dr. Saturday assesses Georgia Tech's chances of potentially playing for the national title.

-- Steve Spurrier's going back to handling play-calling duties after South Carolina's recent collapse.

-- Me thinks Steve Addazio has been munching on the crazy pills.

-- Tony Barnhart brings up an interesting point that keeping coaches quiet after bad officiating calls simply turns up the pressure on the coaches from an element of their fan base that wants to see action. In the case of someone like Mark Richt, the SEC could be saving a ref's reputation while killing the rep of one of its premier coaches.

-- Get the Picture looks even deeper at the officiating problems and notes that it's probably a lot more a problem of perception than anything.

-- Of course, it is a little disturbing that I get a better look at replays from my couch than SEC officials get in the replay booth.

-- I'm largely unimpressed with corporations using social networking because they rarely know what to do with it, but I like that the Chick-fil-A Bowl is trying to take fans behind the curtain a little bit.

-- USA Today has a spreadsheet that allows you to analyze the salaries of every Division I head coach. Bottom line: Mark Richt is getting paid a bunch.

-- Georgia's assistant coaches, on the other hand, are the sixth-highest paid group in the SEC.

-- The winners of the most B.S. award in sports have been announced.

-- The Times of London has yet another 100 best films of the decade list, but I'll admit, this one has some serious shockers in the top six (particularly No. 2 and No. 6). It's not that they were bad movies... but top six? Seriously?

-- Slate's Shame Index gives low marks to the latest developments on "How I Met Your Mother." I'll admit, I don't like how the storyline was handled, but I'll be thrilled if the show gets back to its roots. This season just hasn't been as good as years past (with the exception of Moustache Marshall).

-- Zap 2 It has an update on all the new castmembers of "Scrubs" this season.

-- Evil Terminator has landed a guest gig on "Chuck."

-- And finally, Marty Funkhouser, a.k.a. Super Dave Osbourne, a.k.a. Bob Einstein has a new show coming out on Spike TV. But I love this article because it has an old clip of a Super Dave visit to the old Letterman show.

Gee, who says getting your ass kicked does not affect recruiting. Tenn is going to beat us again next year if we do not upgrade coordinators.

David,
What do you know about that Bleacher Report rumor writer? All of that sounds very flimsy to me. Seems to me someone like you would hear about that kind of stuff well-before some random blog writer (particularly the supposed Rennie to NFL decision).
Ahh the internet...anybody with a computer and an internet coonnection becomes a "reporter"...

David, shouldn't Jancek shoulder some of the blame for the linebackers consistently failing to recognize play action? I'm not faulting him for his recruiting, but it does seem the 'backers get beat in coverage and fooled by anything other than conventional runs. Also, as "co-defensive coordinator", I don't think that he can use Martinez's scheme as a scapegoat.

Bleacher Report is usually the rough equivalent of Joe Cox writing for Web MD.

I've heard nothing to substantiate anything that writer commented on.

Riley -- you're right about the play-action stuff, and that's probably a fair critique. I'm not sure if it's "fire this guy!" worthy, but maybe it is.

As for the co-DC title, that's all it is. It's complete B.S. really. Jancek has absolutely no more input this season than he did last year. Just a title that some other news outlets have made out to be more than it is.

Hey! Thanks for the mention today in your blog. I think the reason most Georgia fans dislike John Jancek is because he isn't very good at his job. Those younger appear to be developing against the back drop of the team's below average veterans, save for Rennie Curran, of course. Georgia did Central Michigan a favor by hiring him. The year after he left as defensive coordinator, their scoring defense dropped by nearly two touchdowns per game (34.4 to 23.6).
Furthermore, I saw Mike Bobo and him buying hot dogs at the Kangaroo across from Butts-Mehre this summer. And they didn't just buy them. They actually ate them, too. I didn't didn't believe anyone did that. You know what hot dogs are made of? Lips and assholes. Can you really trust two people who make choices like that with the responsibilities that come with being a football coach for a corporation like the University of Georgia.

"The Devil Wears Prada" makes the cut, but no "The Departed"?
This list is a sham...

David,

I should have gone into more detail about why I think Jancek should be let go but I think Riley covered it. He is a great recruiter but our players don't appear to have great recognition skills and I don't believe he has developed Gamble and Dent to their full potential. Last year Gamble showed flashes of brilliance and this year that just has not been there. I hate to say it but I think our linebackers think too much and have too much in their heads instead of simply reading and reacting.
