A Few Tidbits from the Snowy Northeast

Couple quick things...

-- The Super Bowl got a huge ratings number -- higher than any show in history. I'm not surprised. Not because of the great stories and matchup, but because it is awful in the Northeast right now. There's 74 feet of snow. That's a rough estimate.

-- Two other Super Bowl notes:

First, I talked to Matt Stinchcomb about his brother, Jon, when we put together our Dawgs of the Decade. Here's what he said:

“He’s a winner. His teams won. I don’t think that’s a coincidence when it happens in high school, college and in the NFL. That speaks a lot to the intangible stuff Jon did. He’s not a physical freak. He just goes out and executes at a really high level.”

Hard to argue with that, and now Jon has a Super Bowl championship to go with it. Oh, and that Saints O line was spectacular, particularly Jon's right side.

It was also worth noting that the Saints' D line -- the one coached by former Dawg Travis Jones -- got some really big hits in on Peyton Manning early in the game.

So while some former Dawgs weren't necessarily the turning points for the Super Bowl, Georgia was most definitely well represented.

-- A bunch of you have asked about Warren Belin and whether he'll coach the ILBs or OLBs. The answer, according to UGA's Claude Felton: TBD. I'm not sure quite what to think of that. You might assume that Georgia would have had a plan before hiring him, but you might also take that to mean they knew who they wanted and it didn't really matter where they put him.

-- And one last thing: I promised you an update on offensive lineman Austin Long, who was sidelined all of last year after back surgery. Here's the update from Claude Felton: "Austin Long will not be available in the spring but is expected to be ready
to play in the fall."

So there you have it.

OK, back to my regularly scheduled vacation.

I knew you couldn't take an actual vacation, David.

Enjoy.

So you couldn't stay away!

FWIW on Belin, I was wondering the same thing and so I went on georgiadogs.com. For Belin it says LB coach; for Grantham it says DC. My guess is Grantham will coach a little of everything including DL and DB's. One more reason why I believe this is that although they've played this down neither Garner nor Lakatos has ever coached in a 3-4 defense. Then again maybe it's all just coincidence.

Try to have a vacation, will ya?!

And another blizzard is on the way.

So does that mean the NE will tune in to watch the Daytona 500 & the Bass Master's turney as well?

Well, Grantham used to coach D-line (so maybe more similar to the OLB position, at least in a 3-4), while Belin might be better with "pure" LBs at the inside slots. That's my thinking, but I'm not exactly a 3-4 guru.
