Landers Wins 800th

From UGA Athletics...

The Georgia Lady Bulldogs quickly ended any suspense as to whether Thursday's game with Savannah State would result in Andy Landers' 800th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

Georgia (11-6) raced to a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the first half and never looked back en route to a 74-28 victory over the Tigers (3-14) at Stegeman Coliseum.

Landers improved to 800-252 in 34 seasons as a collegiate head coach - 82-21 in four seasons at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn., and 718-232 in 30 campaigns in Athens. He is the fifth Division I coach to compile 800 victories and ascended to the milestone in the second-fastest progression.

"It's just another game," Landers said. "That it's No. 800 doesn't make me happy. I'm happy with the way the team played and how we rotated most everyone into the game. We accomplished our objectives for tonight's game, especially those involving rebounds and point total. Offensively, we fell a little short, but for the most part we got everything done tonight."

Georgia opened up a 17-6 lead with 14:02 left in the first half that grew to 22 points with 4:45 remaining in the period and 31 points at the intermission. The margin eventually topped out at 48 points with 1:01 remaining.

Angel Robinson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Ashley Houts chipped in 17 points, three assists and four steals. Jasmine Lee posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Freshman Meredith Mitchell earned her first career start, becoming the 62nd different freshman to start for Landers at Georgia. She replaced Angela Puleo, who is suffering from a stress reaction in her right fibula and did not place as a precautionary measure. Mitchell scored a career-high eight points and collected five steals, the most by any Lady Bulldog in a game this season.

Georgia returns to action on Sunday when the Lady Bulldogs face Florida in Gainesville at 2:00 p.m. in an FSN Sports nationally televised matchup. Georgia's next home game will be next Thursday against Vanderbilt at 7:00 p.m.

I think Lander's win total at UGA is 718.
