Georgia's Next Leader

Ok, so I know a lot of you are bummed, but I thought this might get you a bit more excited for next year.

I'm still working on some stories and I'll have a much longer post up in about 90 minutes, but I wanted to share these two quotes from Joe Cox, who met with reporters for about 20 minutes today. While he doesn't try to throw anyone under the bus, I think he says here what a lot of Georgia fans have already been thinking...

On what he can bring to the offense:

"I've always tried to be a leader, that's one of my strong points. I feel like I can get this team together and have everybody have the same goal and hopefully bring some fire to everybody. I'm a rah-rah guy. I like being vocal. I like getting loud. That's just how I play. Hopefully if I can transfer that to just a couple other people on the team, it could spread like wildfire. That's just how I like to play. I've always looked at Brett Favre and how he played and how he went crazy on the field, and that's just the type of guy I want to be when I play."

On whether that intensity was missing this year:

"Maybe at certain times. Now is it something that I feel that if I would have been in it would have been changed? No. But I felt like at times, and really throughout my career, you can see certain games where it just seemed like we were flat. We just needed somebody or something to spark it, and hopefully I can bring the way I like to play, hopefully that can change some things and maybe bring some fire to us."

This does get me excited. I didn't know this about Joe's personality and I think it's a very good sign. I absolutely think this is something our team was missing this year coming from the top leadership on the field (no offense to Stafford.)

Also, I'm pretty sure Joe has been recognized as the most accurate passer we have. He may not have the arm strength of Stafford (who does?) but he might be very much in the mold of D. Greene (& Mike Bobo before him). Remember Greene's success - the way he managed the game and the accuracy of his throws were probably more valuable than what we had this year (and I'm a Stafford fan).

Bottom line: good leader + senior experience + good accuracy = good quarterback. I think we'll be in good (maybe surprisingly good) hands. My only wish was that we wouldn't have a first-year starter two years in a row... with Cox graduating.

Now the RB situation feels like a little different scenario to me...

GA Joe: a real American hero.

QB is in good (or great) hands. RB likewise. The *KEY* is our OL, with everyone back should be checking passes and kickin @##@# and _that_ has my pumped!

Add an improved defense ...

It's all good for 2009.

I'm pumped for Joe. Ditto to the comment about the line. If Sturdivant is back close to 100% (has been doing squats for weeks) we should have a very very good line. I think Sturdivant, Boling, and Ben Jones are All-SEC caliber- that's huge.

Likewise, I think we'll be fine at runningback. None of those guys are as good as Knowshon obviously, but we've got a better situation heading into 09 than we did in 03 or 04.

I think we can count on Joe Cox's senior leadership...one thing not many have mentioned is the senior leadership we'll have on D: Rod Battle, Jeff Owens, Geno Atkins, Kade Weston, Darius Dewberry, Marcus Washington, Asher Allen, Prince Miller, Bryan Evans- all seniors, plus the amazing Rennie Curran. Sure we need guys at certain positions to really step up this year, but all those seniors at least are a very good sign. This past year we had 3 seniors on defense, and one of them was injured half the season.

You know what they say about those gingers and their temperaments! Joe will definitely bring some fire to this team next year. I think Joe Cox will do a fine job at QB and I'm looking forward to seeing him play. He was highly recruited out of highschool and I don't know what people are so upset about. Yeah he can't make those longs throws like Stafford can, but how often did Stafford try those throws and complete miss his target? Pretty often. We don't need style and pizzazz. We need leadership and Joe Cox will bring taht to the table. I'm looking forward to 09.
