For those of you still holding out hope that Kirby Smart will be the next Georgia defensive coordinator, it might be time to let go.
Gentry Estes of the Mobile Press-Register has some interesting quotes from Smart on his blog today that seem to support the general consensus that Smart and Georgia ain't happening.
"It's been great," Smart said. "It's been great having these players and doing this, and I'm looking forward to it next year. I mean, we've got a lot of good players coming back."
And as for moving on, Smart said he might be interested in a head coaching job, but even that wasn't something he's in a rush to attain.
"If a better opportunity presents itself, then obviously that's something down the road. But young as I am, I'm happy to be where I'm at and happy to be at University of Alabama."
What I've been hearing all along is that there was never much mutual interest from Smart or Georgia beyond some basic discussions (and possibly a little lobbying by Smart's good friend, Mike Bobo). So is there still a possibility that Smart returns to Georgia as the DC? I suppose, but at this point, it's a long shot at best.

I feel like (unless there were more comments that you didn't include) that was a complete non-denial of intrest in UGA. All he has to say is "I am staying here next year and am not taking a DC job at another SEC school." He didn't say that.
I agree...a very long shot.
Watching the Cowboys/ Eagles from Jerry Jones' Roman Palace/Amusement Park. If Todd Grantham doesn't get the UGA job, perhaps he could apply for the DC position in Philly?
Is it just me or does Philly's defense look like the Dawgs' defense? Wait a minute. What the hell has Willie been doing since his release?
I still don't CKS coming but there's nothing there that kills the possibility. If anything, the wording leaves the door open.
David:
I"m not positive I even want Kirby (flavor of the month, with significant upside but also significant risk), but I dont think his comments come anywhere close to closing the door of possibility (particularly for a guy who has been schooled by Nick "I will not be the coach at Alabama" Saban---Kirby's comments don't come anywhere close to the level of Saban's before he took the Alabama job and we all know what happened there).
Seems pretty clear to me: there will be a serious conversation between Richt and Kirby 24-48 hours after the NC game and we'll have a DC 24-48 hours thereafter, whether Kirby or someone else.
Saban doesn't usually allow his assistant coaches to address the media, perhaps the only reason he did this time was so Kirby could make it clear that his intent is to remain at Alabama. Who knows. I don't think he is going to wind up at UGA but not because of anything he specifically said or didn't say at that press conference.
I think it is going to be Todd Grantham. Now if only Dallas would hurry up and lose so Georgia can make the announcement and we can all move on and David can go on vacation.
can someone tell me how Todd Grantham even got in the running for the job? I mean, what's his connection to CMR?
I'm sorry, but I think the thing that trumps EVERYTHING in these blogs and pressers is this:
It would be incredibly easy for Kirby to say the words: " I am not accepting the DC position at UGA. I am staying with the Tide. "
And yet he hasn't said that. Hasn't even come close. That absence speaks volumes to me, even if I'm unsure that Kirby and Richt would be a good fit.
I'm in agreement with most of the above comments. That being that all Kirby has to say is, "I'm not going to Georgia. Period." If he really is not coming than that's a real simple statment to end the speculation.
I personally think he's not coming to UGA. But if anything the above statements actually make me think, "maybe he is??"
Suits me if he doesn't come to UGA. We don't need a fly by DC. Good luck to KS, DGD, but the timing just isn't right for either party.
I don't think Kirby is the right one for UGA...if he laterals,it will be to Texas when Muschamp takes over...Texas will pay him incredible money,too...
just because Kirby played for UGA and is a friend of Bobo's doesn't count for much,IMHO.I want us to have someone who is very good and wants to be the DC for Richt...
let's all move on...
old dawg
Mark Bradley seems to think that if we don't hire Smart, it's an epic fail.
Personally, I don't know whether to say it's a long shot or still a possibility in regard to Smart. All I know is that we have the money to give him a significant raise, and he hasn't said "I will not be the DC at UGA." That may not mean jack squat. But let's not pretend that no assistant has ever left Alabama.
