Picking Sides in the QB Battle

Normally I'd say we've been through enough discussion of the quarterback derby already, but we've got three months to kill, so why not dive in a bit deeper, eh?

First off, I posted the combined spring scrimmage stats the other day, which seems to be the best evidence for Zach Mettenberger's claim to the top of the depth chart.

But two things to keep in mind about that...

First off, here are the stats if you take out the G-Day numbers:

Murray: 23-of-32 (72%) for 284 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs
Mettenberger: 17-of-26 (66%) for 283 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT

Slight edge for Murray in completion percentage, but he threw one additional INT.

So the bottom line in Mettenberger's significantly better overall numbers comes down to a significantly better G-Day performance. And G-Day was perhaps the least game-like of the three scrimmages.

Of course, perhaps the stats don't really mean much of anything at all. To wit, here are the numbers from last spring:

Quarterback A: 19-of-30 (63%) for 207 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT
Quarterback B: 24-of-47 (51%) for 249 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT
Quarterback C: 13-of-21 (62%) for 325 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs

Which of the three would you have said should be the leader on the depth chart at the end of last spring?

Would it change your opinion any if I added the fact that Quarterback C had the longest completion of the day in each of the three scrimmages?

Well, as it turns out, QB A was Logan Gray, QB B was Joe Cox and QB C was Aaron Murray.

Was Murray anywhere near ready to be the starter when he posted those numbers? Not even close.

Was Gray in position to unseat Cox as the starter because of his better numbers in the spring? I think most of us agree now that he wasn't.

And was Cox a disaster because his spring numbers didn't look all that hot? He wasn't great in the fall, but he did lead all SEC QBs in TDs during conference play. His problem wasn't so much the low yardage or completion totals, but the high number of INTs -- an issue which didn't manifest itself in the spring at all.

It's understandable for fans to over-analyze the little bit of information we get from the spring, but the coaches have a much, much broader spectrum of evidence to review before making a decision. So be careful not to put too many eggs in one basket this time of year. Spring stats are like the tip of an iceberg -- it's just a small but visible percentage of a much larger picture.

Anyway, lots of responses on both sides to my recent posts on how seriously we should take what happened on G-Day. Here's a bit of what was said...

Anonymous writes: David why is it that everytime i read something about the QBs you are always baised for AM? man crush maybe? anyways a covered WR is a covered WR and ZM made some really good throws, so who are bring down here? Mett not good because of who he played or are you saying our 2nd teamers aren't any good?

David: Let's look at this conversation objectively for a second -- I'm a Syracuse fan from Delaware who is paid to write news about Georgia. I have no ties to UGA, no vested interest in UGA's performance (other than that I'd like to go somewhere fun for the bowl game) and I get paid the same no matter how much I write or who I write about.

Anonymous, on the other hand, is a Georgia fan who assumes because I wrote something he doesn't agree with that I must be the one who is bias and purposely trying to tear down some member of his favorite team.

So… which one of us do you think is writing objectively?

Look, Mettenberger had a good day. He's made huge strides. I've written both of those things numerous times. But G-Day is not everything.

Again... I'm not picking a side with any QB. I'm reporting to you the most objective information I can because I want you to be informed. If you don't want to read information that may clash with your opinions, I can't help you.

The best information I have says Murray was the favorite entering the spring. Aside from G-Day, Murray performed well this spring. G-Day, as we've discussed, is an inaccurate representation of overall performance. So that formula leads me to believe that Murray is still the favorite -- though probably by a smaller margin than he was before. I'm not rooting for him -- I'm just telling you what I think best sums up the situation.

If and when the time comes that the information I have changes, you'll hear about that, too.

Anonymous writes: Last year Logan went out and had a good spring game, many debated if he should start over Cox. I was a Cox fan and thought Logan maybe deserved it.

Murray has been subject to much hype since grabbing him out of Plant HS and many seem to want to justify him as that hyped player when none of these kids have proven anything at game speed including Logan.

IMO Mett fits Bobo's play calling the better than any QB he has had since becoming OC. If CMR was OC I could see Logan or Murray being better.

David: I'm not trying to pick on this commenter, because his views are probably indicative of many readers' take on things, but a couple things confuse me.

First off, why the hate regarding Murray's "hype"? You guys do realize he plays for Georgia, right? Shouldn't you be excited that one of your own is getting hype? Aaron Murray was a spectacular high school quarterback. His coaches at Georgia have raved about his preparation and willingness to accept coaching. Other scouts and QBs have raved about his potential athletically. AND HE PLAYS FOR GEORGIA. What's not to like? He's not someone who just fell out of the sky and started being hyped for no reason. He's earned it, and he continues to work hard.

Now, does that mean you have to write off Mettenberger or Logan Gray? Absolutely not. Again, Mett has made huge strides. But I don't get why this has become anything remotely close to an emotional debate for Georgia fans. You have (at least) two good quarterbacks who have four years of playing time in front of them. That's a good thing, right?

And as for who fits the system better, I think that's a moot point. Bobo wasn't OC for D.J. Shockley, but he was the QB coach. And moreover, Richt has been heavily involved in the QB meetings and offensive meetings this spring, so who's to say that he's not working closely with Bobo to develop ways to employ a more mobile QB?

Dog44 writes: Someone other than Mett is going to start the season at QB for the Bulldogs. That's a fact. If that QB does really well, there will be no reason to make a change and he'll likely be the QB for the foreseeable future. So that leaves two QBs as potential season-starters: Murray and Gray. It may not be a coincidence that those were the two guys who split reps with the ones on Saturday. So in essence, Mett is playing for the back-up role to begin the season. If the starter struggles, Mett will get his shot. So any debate right now over whether he should start over one of those other two guys is a bit pointless. He's not going to start the first game regardless, and might not ever start unless the other guy can't get the job done.

Based on everything we've heard about Murray and on Mett's suspension, the job is still Murray's to lose. If he struggles, I'm glad we'll have a very talented back-up in place.

David: Depending on who you're talking to, the suspension Mettenberger faces is either being over-analyzed or under-analyzed.

Dog44 is right in that the suspension can't be ignored. Richt specifically said that whoever starts the first game is going to have a leg up the rest of the way. Well guess what -- Mett isn't starting the first game, and that isn't going to change no matter how well Mett performs.

That said, in 2006 Joe Tereshinski started the first game and played well against a lower-tier opponent. Then a week later, Georgia went to Columbia, Tereshinski got hurt early, and Matthew Stafford came in for his first serious action as a college player and helped lead Georgia to a win. So it can happen, and Mettenberger actually has more experience than Stafford, who was a true freshman at the time.

The bottom line is that the suspension is a big plus in Murray's favor, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee anything. I said two days after Mett's arrest that this wouldn't disqualify him from the competition, but that he would now need to do more than simply show he was a little ahead of Murray to win the job. He's going to have to prove unequivocally that he's the better quarterback -- and while that's still a possibility, that hasn't happened yet.

Anonymous writes: What's interesting to me is that a lot of people have resolved in their mind that Aaron Murray is the QB based on what he did in High School and last year in according to practice reports. I believe I was one of those people until I went to the G-Day game.

The fact is that Mett has made great strides and has performed equally well if not better in all of the scrimmages from a stat standpoint. This includes whether he went against 1st team or 2nd team defenses. Granted there is more to it than stats. However, it does give us some indication.

People tend to pick a horse and want to see that horse win..but these kids are all representatives of a team. A team that we want to see win.

I'm cool with Murray or Mett and know that they are loaded with talent. If our line is dominant and we can run the ball both of them could do some damage.

But I am no longer going to discount Mett because of where he started last year. He looked cool and calm from the time he stepped on the field for warm ups. And I don't care if he was throwing against a high school defense..he looked good.

If Murray is the starter that will be fine too. The great thing is that we have 2 highly talented kids at QB. No longer is there going to be a huge gap if someone gets hurt. Remember when Shockley's backup was Joe T :(

We've got 2 guys that can play. I trust Richt will handle the situation and I look forward to watching the Dawgs kick tail in the Fall.

David: I don't think anyone should discount Mettenberger's accomplishments. The best news to come from this spring was probably how much Mett has progressed since last fall.

But let's look at the logic here: "What's interesting to me is that a lot of people have resolved in their mind that Aaron Murray is the QB based on what he did in High School and last year in according to practice reports. I believe I was one of those people until I went to the G-Day game."

So what you're saying is that it's silly to buy into all the evidence in support of Murray if you saw one watered-down practice on G-Day? That seems like the opposite of the logic you should be taking.

If Murray was a star in high school, one of the most highly recruited QBs in the country, had exceptional scrimmage performances last year, earned praise from coaches for how he prepared as a redshirt, and then played well this spring right up until G-Day, wouldn't logic dictate that G-Day was the exception, not the other way around?

And as I noted at the beginning, Mettenberger wasn't far superior in each scrimmage. Just the last one.

Of course, the last point is the best one: There are two good quarterbacks here, and that's good news for Georgia fans.

Anonymous writes: Mett had the best touch on the ball.

Murray overthrew targets and tossed a Stafford style brain fade pass to the defender. I should have known right then he was Bobo's boy for the job. I have heard enough about picking up nuances and quick releases, it does nothing if the ball isn't catchable.

Tebow had terrible mechanics if you listen to the NFL scouts but won a BCS title as a starter and played in a defacto playoff for a 2nd.

David: I honestly want to know what joy people like this get from being fans? You hate Bobo, you're willing to throw one of your QBs under the bus after one ugly throw, and you've made up your mind about a player and a coach already. You're still upset with Stafford for -- OK, I'm not sure exactly what. And you don't think the nuances like release, footwork and reading progressions are important keys to the puzzle because your QB isn't completing every deep ball he throws.

I'm a Philly fan and even I'm not that masochistic.

The interception Murray threw was probably the ugliest pass by any QB all spring. I haven't seen the previous two scrimmages, but I feel comfortable in saying it'd be hard to throw one any uglier. But it was one throw out of literally thousands that the QBs made this spring, and if you think Richt or Bobo or any other coach should let that be the overriding factor in selecting a QB, then you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Richt-Flair writes: One throw? Really?

Greene probably made that throw in his first or second G-Day game. I seem to remember him having a forgettable game against Clemson in 2002 as well. I know Shockley and Stafford have made those throws. Cox ... well, yea.

None of the Qbs are ready. that's what fall camp is for. It's a coachable moment and I'm sure it's already been pointed out, and probably corrected. Who knows if the scrimmage rules didn't play a hand -- it looked like they were going to stop the play, and I'm sure it crossed Murray's mind.

I came away impressed the with progress of the QBs, and that's about all I'm taking away from it.

David: Exactly my point. The G-Day scrimmage is a contrived event that doesn't give anything close to an accurate picture of the progress anyone has made this spring. Mettenberger looked good, and he deserves credit. And Georgia fans should be excited by this spring, but understand that all three QBs still have a ways to go.

Wooly Butts writes: Just wondering why people must choose sides in the QB competition. I want the best guy to win the job and win games for UGA. I'm happy to see that all 3 contenders have competed well this spring and that we'll have someone under center next year who's beaten out impressive competitors. It's all about the Dawgs, and I'm feeling better about the QB position heading into summer and fall, based on strong showings in the spring.

David: Well said. So let's all relax, see what the depth chart tells us when it's finally released, and then continue to see how the QBs progress over the summer. The competition didn't end Saturday, so let's just sit back and enjoy watching two talented young quarterbacks develop their games. I'll continue to report to you the best, objective information I can get, and you can choose to believe that information or not.

Since we have so much time to talk about the QB battle all summer can we think of a different phrase to use for Mett than "he has made great strides". Its only 4 days removed from G-day and its been used way to many times.

Randy Said: David I agree with your comments. My enthusiasm for UGA is often tempered by the "lunatic fringe" comments who want to fire this person or that person. They act like they are experts and could coach at the SEC level. There are sure a lot of idiots out there and don’t let them get to you (but continue to pump some reality back at them). I had always hoped those people would stay on the AJC board and not find their way here. Great Job, enjoy the blog and your work. This is going to be a long 3+ months without anything meaningful happening

Your "logic" is overrated. I'm rooting for fletcher to beat you out for the starting blogging position based upon a typo you had a few posts ago.

David Hale said...

Hey, the competition just makes us all better, and Fletcher has really made some strides since last fall. He's progressed well, but I'd still call myself the favorite.

Unknown said...

Good responses, David, to the oversold Mett arguments from G-Day. Both players, along with Logan, are deserving of the QB competition.

Good article David. I like all three but just watching the three of them I like what Aaron Murray brings -- a strong arm, a quick release and quick feet. I know he didn't have the numbers Mettenberger did in the G Day game and he did have a bad Interception but I think the upside for AM is tremendous. Having said that, when Fall plays out I'm sure that Richt and Bobo will start the best QB. If Logan doesn't win the job I sure would like to see him used in some other ways. That would be a lot of wasted athletic ability sitting on the bench.

Careful Hale, don't get too cocky or Tyler Estep will blow you out of the water.

Andy Coleman said...

Come on David, we all know that Murray is just the best looking of the 3. Shouldn't a team with great looking uniforms, like the Dawgs, have a great looking QB to sport the Red & Black with Silver Britches?

Just a "thanks" to D-Hale and the various commentators for keeping this discussion sane and satisfying. Reading the comments following just about any other blog makes me embarrassed to be a member of the human race, and even embarrassed to be a UGA fan. I suspect that D's lengthy columns are far too long to maintain the attention spans of the dingalings who post "first" and flame each other's schools, players, coaches, and fans no matter what the content of the blogs. For whatever reason, Hale's commentary invites comments that are actually worth reading. We all need a moment of sanity, and thanks for providing it.

Dr. Merkwurdigliebe said...

David - you so nailed it that I'm speechless.

You can add this one to the pile of crazy comments. "We don't have to worry about the QB winning the game we can just hand the ball off to our running backs."

Uh, the pass sets-up the run and visa-versa. You've got to be successful and both passing and running!

Woah, woah, Andy, don't get too sold on Murray's looks now...
All I've gotta say is that at G-Day, when Mett took his helmet off and gave a hair-flip in true Riley Cooper fashion, all of the sorority girls around me immediately began swooning...

His frat-shag certainly is a step up from when he came on board last year (I remember seeing a picture of him with a buzzcut and glasses and thinking, "who is this nerd?")
I'm just glad to see that Mett has made great strides this spring in his hair maintenance...

Anonymous said...

Maybe Mett can get him some Axe "hair action". Do they make hair gel for those "pork chop" sideburns???

David again ill ask,Whats the deal with the man love for AM? I may have to take a break from reading your blog because your QB stuff is getting more and more baised.

Ok question, If Gday means nothing it was so easy blah blah blah then why didn't AM, with his Good like playing, just make Mett and Gray look like fools? Its to smiple? Bull crap, maybe just maybe......your wrong?

I played the game, and I'm a coach my self, and Mett, from the vids you and th school has posted, is the best. period.
The one game off means nothing. You looking at it way to much, and Richt said "the guy" has a l eg up yes, but he didn't say the QB that starts the first game will be the guy. I saw the PC, i know what was said word for word, so your trying to read between the lines, when there isn't anything there to read.
Ok I'm done.

PS, other than the QB stuff I love the blog, just wish you would tone the bais down some
PSS I have been pulling for Mett the hole time, Gday didn't do it for me, but it did show me that AM doesn't have an arm at all and loves to throw the ball to the wrong team....ala Joe.

Randy says: Anon 5:29: Spell Check dude, you are not helping yourself writing garbage. I for one have thought David has been pretty even handed. Anon: You have the man crush, not David. Goodbye

David Hale said...

Anon, are you serious? How can I explain it any more clearly? I'm not bias. I don't care who wins. I'm reporting WHAT I KNOW.

Murray had a bad day at G-Day. There's no denying that. But that's what it was -- one bad day. Everybody has them. A.J. Green had 28 yards receiving and dropped a pass he could have probably hauled in. So what... bench him now?

I'm just trying to give an accurate description of what the current standings of all three QBs are. I DON'T CARE WHO WINS THE JOB!

It's not about me being right or wrong. I can't be either because I'm not telling you what's going to happen. I'm telling you that the best information we have right now says that Murray is the likely frontrunner but that BOTH QBs have made strong cases and both have shown improvement this spring. My only knock against Mett -- and it's not actually a knock against him -- is that the bottom line comes down to a lot more than a stat line on G-Day.

And honestly, if you think Murray doesn't have an arm, you weren't watching the game. Murray's arm isn't quite as strong as Mett's -- but that's because Mett's is otherworldly. Murray's is plenty strong to be playing in the SEC.

I really don't understand what is so confusing here.

Enough of the QB talk, how bout this latest rumor of why Grantham is not attending any of the Bulldog meetings with Richt? My sources say him and Richt had a huge disagreement and thus Richt barred him from the tour.
Grantham wanted to keep Montez, said we needed more players with his enthusiasm, and Richt said no way.

Andy said...

Yeah, enough QB talk. There are other big stories.

David, is there any truth to the rumor that, in light of another underwhelming G-Day, Evans is thinking about firing Richt and promoting Grantham? Word has it Grantham is already in talks with Mike Leach to run the offense. At least this is what ESPN Rumor Central was reporting...

David if you ever had any doubts that 80 percent of the Bulldawg Nation is nuttier than a fruit cake this QB talk should convince you. Mett is a home grown Ga boy Gray and Murray are not, that alone gets most of the fans in Mett's court. It's not going to get any better just remember the words of the great UGA philosopher Lewis Grizzard " Never wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty but the pig loves it." Don't wrestle with this QB thing any more.

One thing that may weigh into this decision is long-term stability. The Mett suspension has obvious short-term implications, but has to be in the back of the coaches' minds long-term. This is the QB, the defacto leader of your team. With a lot on the line this winter, Mett made a bad off-the-field decision. This is not a kicker or O-lineman. And if you're the coach about to hand the keys of the program and your job over to an adolescent, stability has to play into it. You have to wonder what happens if he gets in more trouble down the road.

That said, CMR does a good job of keeping player trouble in perspective and gives second chances when they're due. This may be one of those times. I just think it's probably a little different with QBs.

Haven't read this blog and comments avidly. This may have already been touched on.

Whatever the coaches planned on G Day in regards to the QBs' may have backfired in terms of the fans at the G Day. What is the use of fans going to G Day if whatever they witness may end up being useless or have no significant value. Does not anybody think why some fans are quite frustrated about the seasons' game results, if after all the coaches pick their own favorites????

Anonymous said...

David Hale,

Syracuse really.

It is your God-Given Right to type away your Opinion of what you have seen at QB with UGA having an open competition for QB this year.

Coach Richt has not done this much here at UGA. He did in 2001 when he chose David Greene over DJ Shockley. He then Redshirted DJ Shockley and David Greene promptly went out and “knocked the lid off this UGA football program by beating # 4 Final AP Poll Tennessee vols at Neyland Stadium.”

David Greene never duplicated that feat, beating a Top 10 Final AP Poll team, in his 5 years here. The same year, he lost 4 games. He won The SEC in a down year 2003, but by the time his Junior and Senior Years here were over, he flattened out, having peaked. He looked particularly poor in the preseason, and is out of the NFL already. DJ Shockley won 1 SEC Championship in one year, and still is in the NFL. DJ is slightly undersized and has had some injuries. Looking back on it, I am not at all certain that DJ Shockley isn’t the better QB with the far better arm, and still holds the Record at UGA for most TDs by an UGA QB both passing and running. DJ beat # 6 Final AP Poll LSU.

Coach Richt conducted an open competition at QB and determined his depth chart as # 1 Joe Tereshinski III, # 2 Joe Cox and # 3 Matthew Stafford.

Since that time, Mike Bobo has not prepared a QB. There is little doubt that although you as a Syracuse me don’t understand the blogger you said when he pointed out that Matthew Stafford was not all that great for UGA as a QB in his 3-year NFL interview here, that Matthew Stafford continued to fumble and throw interceptions at an alarming rate, ending with 52 fumbles and interceptions and the same number of 52 TD passes. He lost to every SEC East team in a row, all 5. He threw the football even when he had Knowshon Moreno, culminating for example with 31, 42 and 29 consecutive points as the # 1 Team against us, handing the tater off to the best running back here in 30 years, an average of 14 times all 3 of those losses for the # 1 Team in the Nation according to everyone. Matthew Stafford beat # 9 Final AP Poll Auburn his Freshman Year, and like David Greene never duplicated that feat ever again, either – beating a Top 10 Final AP Poll team. He lost 4 games that year, and was UGA’s only QB to play every game. He came here the # 1 NFL draft pick already from high school, and left the same and had the worst season in the history of the NFL last year with the most interceptions and fumbles, fewest TD passes, and lowest QB rating in the NFL.

Anonymous said...

Last year, Mike Bobo did not prepare a QB either. Joe Cox, as you point out, led the nation in interceptions and fumbles and oh by the way, added 5 losses. TDs as a QB for UGA ? He did not have more than DJ Shockley his 1 year, too. They both were 5th year QBs in this program, and DJ Shockley was far and away the better QB. As a matter of fact, you show nothing of the stats for Zach Mettenberger last season but he was an early enrollee who was not injured and who would have progressed by the Kentucky game to have not lost to them at home. Even with the flu and his chronic shoulder, we did not play Zach Mettenberger when we signed 2 Quarterbacks in the Top 10 in the nation. What’s this Aaron Murray is a hyped QB ? Do you not realize, as you do not point out that so was Zach Mettenberger. By playing Zach Mettenberger in Stillwater, we might have won. We certainly would have progressed having a QB ready for this season. Something playing Joe Cox did not accomplish quite obviously.

Now, we have Logan Gray who openly to the press landed a big blow on this coaching staff criticizing them for not letting him have an open competition at QB last year, not this year, during Spring Practice this year.

Aaron Murray has never taken a snap under center. Ever.

Aaron Murray is small, barely 6 feet, shorter than DJ Shockley, and weighs in at 198 lbs. He was injured, therefore in high school, injured all year in Practice last year with a sore arm, another point you actually state otherwise that Aaron Murray was the best UGA QB in practice all last year. And, Aaron Murray threw not 1 deeper type pass that was overthrown, but all 5.

Meaningless game G-Day ? 40,000 screaming fans, like all the other practices, only less meaningful ? Sorry, I don’t follow that logic either. I love your blog, but this defense of Aaron Murray by you does not present the facts, sir. Deer in the headlights in a game situation with 40,000 fans in Sanford Stadium and oh by the way, the only scrimmage on TV too. Millions have watched that game on TV and he never had that at Plant High School, either, or 40,000 screaming fans. Not under Center. With what appeared to me to be still a sore arm.

David Greene

Joe Tereshinski III

Joe Cox

Who now ?

I have little confidence for an offensive coaching staff to choose correctly this time, either for a program which has lost 10 SEC East games in the previous 4 years, including 5 in a row, while averaging # 96 in the nation in penalties all 4 years, averaging 14 interceptions a year all 4 years, and averaging 21 fumbles a year all 4 years.

We are in decline David Hale, sir. Maybe not for Syracuse, but for UGA. We won 2 SEC Championships Coach Richt’s first 5 years, and in the last 4 have not gotten a sniff since. Even the 2 SEC Championships did not get us on the National Stage with a win over a Top 10 Final AP Poll team. Our 2 BCS bowl wins are over # 19 Hawaii Final AP Poll ranking and # 23 FSU who by the way had 5 LOSSES.

Our problem is on Offense. Our depth chart has been a major part of our struggles on offense, the play calls, and yes sir the QB play the last 4 years with fumbles and interceptions compared to their TD passes.

The 1 lone QB in the system now today 4 years, we asked to move to WR and he didn’t want to. He has on TV in games with 50,000 fans or more completed in 4 years now today, 5 passes. He has 0 TD passes and 2 interceptions.

Don’t read too much into it that Mike Bobo watched as Aaron Murray threw his arm out last year, and missed 21 practices, which you surmise as Aaron Murray was the better QB in practice last year. Aaron Murray is not ready. Zach Mettenberger will be drafted in the NFL.

TLDR
